The problem with the horror genre is that unlike drama or comedy or romance its tools and language all have limited lifespan. All horror movies boil down to the fear of the unknown but as soon as you put it in a movie and a bunch of people see it the unknown becomes known and then it's no longer scary (and eventually reaches the point of parody). Like if you watch Nosferatu now it doesn't move the needle at all but back in 1925 it was terrifying. It's why horror goes through phases like the classic monsters of the 30s, the slasher flicks of the 80s and the torture porn of the 00s. You find what works and you milk it until the audience goes numb and then you find the next thing. So just cause horror films aren't scary any more it doesn't mean they're bad. Nosferatu's still a classic.

I wonder ore about horror games. Why are there a nearly infinite amount of lovely first person horror games, who is buying them? If some lovely low effort game comes out there's like a 50% chance that it is a horror game

My favorite piece of media from The Thing is a short story by Peter Watts. I actually read it before I'd ever seen or heard about the movie(s), and only connected it later when I heard someone talking about the movie. It's still pretty fun though actually, a lot of the levels are solid and very enjoyable. I found the controls okay for the most part, they are purposefully awkward since weird traversal mechanics are pretty much the point of the game
