I suppose it depends on what your perspective is on WoW, but an ounce of retention is worth a pound of cure. The amount of effort required to keep people playing/engaged would've been a lot smaller than that required to bring them back, and the latter will just keep growing until they really convince people it's worth coming back.

Obviously releasing a new game would not fix poo poo on its own, but the visionary required to lead them into a proper WoW renaissance would be the same visionary who'd do it as a new game.

I mean I think something like Shadowlands is entirely salvalgeable if they just focused on not wasting the player's time. That was all that was really wrong with BFA, Legion, and to a tiny extent WoD as well. (WoD had a lot of problems with a lack of endgame content and class design I won't get into)

Unfortunately, for whatever reason, these expansions keep launching with the goal being to explicitly waste players time and keep them tied to a single character and logging in every single day. Flying is probably the best example of this: it's almost universally enjoyed by players, makes things easier, and saves time. So of course Blizzard has been actively trying to remove it from the game or massively delay when players can access it or gatekeep it for this entire time period, to the point they decided they would never do flying again in WoD until almost the entire playerbase told them to eat poo poo and threatened to quit, and they begrudgingly added flying gated by a huge rep grind.

This is now the regular modus operandi: Flying gets gated by a huge grind and time delay for no reason except some spreadsheet guy noticed that drip feeding player QoL causes a resurgance of player subscription numbers when people think their time might no longer be wasted and come back to the game to see if they're allowed to have fun yet.

This ties back around to every other system: raids are intentionally released over a >1 month period in lfr to boost subacriptions, loot is tied to weekly chests instead of being given at the end of the dungeon/raid to encourage you to renew your subscription so you can see what it is you actually won, each expansion comes up with some new resource to grind every single day to encourage you to login daily to stay ahead of the competition (or to keep caught up with your guild, because 20 man raiding is pushed as the only endgame)

Once you see past the veneer of the great job the art team did, the whole game becomes a bunch of predatory psychological abuse by losers with spreadsheets to get an optimal number of subscription counts, and people see past that veneer now. They don't want the drip feed of QoL anymore, they just want the game to be good in the first place. Simple as.

MAU is a loving plague on the entire industry as a whole. Once every single game demands I log in to it every day OR ELSE I just stop playing all of that poo poo collectively.

weekly loot chests have been around since... legion? for m+, but in shadowlands they tacked raids and pvp onto it as well.

hell if you want to squint your eyes a bit, there are random loot chests that have a very small chance to contain rare mounts you can't buy anymore that you can buy with gold, and gold can be bought with irl money, so effectively the game can be whaled in exactly the same way you would a gacha game. absolutely every way of milking money in video games is in wow, all at the same time. it's absurd.

Overwatch desperately needs changes, as evidenced by the fact that it has literally no players, despite people who no longer playing it crawling out of the woodwork to declare it needs no changes whenever any changes are brought up

1-3-2 probably could have saved that game but it was shot down hard by the incredibly tiny remaining core player base who wants nothing to change because the thought of anyone dying in their fps is terrifying.

HotS could have been salvaged as easily as just going the DotA route of making all heroes free and focusing on cosmetics. At worst let it be a loss leader to draw in people from other Blizzard franchises and from the two competing mobas so they get into the "blizzard ecosystem" or whatever insane marketing lingo they call it.

The fact that the game still has pay for heroes is a huge joke. They actually forgot to update the free to play rotation a few weeks ago so there were literally no free heroes available to play if you were new to the game. lol

they should add more tanks and more healers and get rid of the dps role so that the 18 remaining overwatch fans can finally have what they want

this seems backwards and people who suck at shooters are a bigger market to aim for .

not really? call of duty, battlefield, counterstrike, etc are all way bigger than any product blizzard has put out. call of duty has drummed up something like 30 billion dollars for activision. there's a reason it's not called blizzard-activision.

Yeah, the whole "feels like they're punishing the player base for being bad" thing implies that it's a punishment to... not have as many boobies in a game? That the act of altering the cleavage/naked lady/innuendo content of a game is stripping something vital and essential? Why do so many discussions about "I wish the female characters could cover up some" get countered by "you just hate fun, you're taking my fun away, why can't we have FUN???".

the painting removal, in context, is perfectly reasonable. mostly the way it's being told to people from third parties is done with an agenda to cover that up or make it sound like all paintings of women are being removed, which leads to a lot of the weird takes about it. people just looking for excuses to get outraged basically.

the armor change is a lot less cool, but afaik they already walked the change back. it's a fantasy game played by adults (especially anyone who's been playing it for 18 years or whatever at this point) and feeling sexy in an over the top way is something adults should be allowed to do. removing that option is effectively slut shaming, especially with the huge amount of non sexualized armor available in the game. the change would've made more sense if all the armor in wow was like that, but it's not. and to bring it back to the first point: people here are behaving as if all armor in the game *is* sexualized, so they can be properly outraged about it. lol

https://www.wowhead.com/transmog-sets#gallery

the infamous "boob plate" is one sexualized armor set among literally hundreds, and that one redeeming feature makes it popular. people like being sexy, especially in a fantasy game.
