Ra Ra Rasputin posted:Has there been any game designed from the ground up to be the next big E-SPORTS game that stuck the landing without breaking their legs on entry? starcraft 2 was absolutely designed to be an esport and had a pretty good run. not a perfect game but it has a scene that still exists to this day.

Dick Burglar posted:Yeah, the fact that they weren't able to make a compelling game out of that concept feels like more a condemnation of the team than the concept being bad. it may have been they could have made something compelling, just they had no idea how to monetize it to the standards upper management wanted vs the cost to develop

unionize already ffs if the board stands by bobby for this, theres nothing else you can do

Grondoth posted:This makes the fact that the board is stickin' with him make more sense. 292 is a ridiculous sum for making a CEO leave, so the fact that they haven't taken the most obvious move makes much more sense. I don't know why they signed this contract, but knowing it's like a AAA budget to fire the guy is an understandable barrier protecting his neck. they signed the contract because in spite of bobby kotick being a monster he made them a lot of money and gave them the infinite growth shareholders desire

money makes your brain go dumb and hoardy. the richer you are the more clingy you get to your money. losing a billion dollars means that you're at risk of losing everything. the hoarding is a human flaw, a brain worm that happens to be larger than most, in a sociopaths brain, and the more money they get the bigger the worm gets. anyway dune was a pretty good movie whats going on with bobby kotick

they didnt even do it through layoffs, iirc they cut profit share for senior employees at some point which is aroudn when you saw the exodus of like ben brode and stuff. that might just be hearsay tho, but a lot of people explicitly quit around that time.

The United States posted:Konami actually started the plastic instruments genre with Beatmania and Drummania and Guitar Freaks, Activision definitely intended to milk it to death once they bought Red Octane, but EA jumping on board with Harmonix and Rock Band defnitely accelerated the death-via-milking to "under a decade" looking forward to the nostalgic return of guitar hero guitars

The United States posted:They tried. It failed. But they'll try again in another 5-10 years I'm sure. yeah there wasnt enough time imo. it wasnt collectively associated with full-on good times nostalgia. i imagine we'll get something that works with phones or something.

John Murdoch posted:I was under the impression that the bolded bit is a critical part of the whole scheme. Reselling game items was always something companies wanted to stamp out at all costs because they weren't getting a cut. With NFTs when somebody sells their stupid digital hat for $1000 now they can double (triple, quadruple, infinite-ple) dip by not only getting the initial buy-in money but also a chunk of any successive sales. this only works if you resell it on a specific marketplace that recognizes it lol

Disargeria posted:Lore was well liked at first and had solid clout as the Tankspot guy,, but his interactions with the community steadily soured. In BfA he launched the extremely controversial Azerite post where he communicated that the devs were actively considering making Azerite harder to respec instead of easier. This blew up and players were pissed. (You can see the beginnings of the Covenant problem here). He ranted on Twitter about how awful and stupid the players were, like we couldn't read his public posts. there is literally no situation in which a community manager can win and when people are rightfully mega lovely you literally cant complain about it. it rules. i am so glad i do not do community management anymore!!

Ghost Leviathan posted:Took long enough but licensed games really have died hard. The rising costs of the HD era did it I think, but also apparently realising you can't just poo poo out a tie-in in time for the movie's release and expect it to sell based on grandma buying it for little Timmy anymore. with big IPs its probably just more lucrative to invest in phone games tbh

Warzone is unfathomably profitable. like blizzard doesnt even need to make king money to still be of extremely high value. make really good IPs, maintain really strong old ones, and use those IPs for secondary sources of monetization through fandom and as goodwill for the parent company to put people into other parts of the ecosystem. but lol, lmao. shareholders dont care.

almost every successful esport had a really awkward phase where there wasnt a lot of money in it and just people playing the game at the highest levels ebcause they liked it. the game stood under competitive scrutiny even with really jank and underfunded situations. it was only after that they became actual esports. you cant speedrun a competitive community and game with extra dollars. just bonkers they blew it all on that without going "ok lets let this pan out for a year to make sure even observing the game is fun"
