Cythereal posted:So, it looks like that senior writer at Blizzard who left the other week didn't just leave on his own. It's now looking like he was pressured into resigning by Blizzard HR because he was corroborating and supporting complaints by women at the company, judging by a couple of videos looking at his social media history and other communications.

Thing is, for Blizzard this has always worked before. They don't have anybody capable of imagining it won't work this time.

It's not as though there is sworn court testimony from the cabin attendant he harassed, or as if he himself admitted, in public, to having threatened to kill an employee. Hey, denial is working just fine for other men in power.

I think we now have an additional explanation for why (A) Microsoft backed down on "Actiblizz is bad" and (B) the board insisted on keeping Kotick. I mean, apart from capitalism and the old-boy network. Merger negotiations take months, and nobody wanted to change CEOs in the middle of a merger. Similarly, Microsoft didn't want to leave any more anti-Blizz comments in the open record when they expected to announce the purchase within weeks. In my experience of the software industry, the acquired company's CEO doesn't stay in power longer than a year-ish, but is shifted to some high-titled position and expected to leave to spend more time with their billions. The only exception I can think of is YouTube, although I'm sure there are others. Also in my experience, absolutely nothing happens at the acquired company for at least six months, because all departments stop dead to explain to their new overlords what exactly it is that they do, and why they should get more money to do it. Sucks to be support staff (legal, in-house services, anything not related to the core business) because they get shoved out ASAP.

Nowadays the best reporting comes from Schreier, but he's at Bloomberg now and they've got a paywall. The Onion did not form G/O Media. Rather, a rump group of Gawker properties, owned by Univision for a bit, was sold off to the investment firm. The Onion hasn't been a separate media company since 2003, when the founders sold it to a different investment firm.

Julian Gough, the guy who wrote the End Poem on Minecraft, never signed a contract waiving rights with Notch/Mojang/Microsoft. In a long, rambling essay he explains that he's "setting it free"; he now claims it's under one of the many open-source plans. It'll be interesting to see how this one shakes out. Given that he admits he accepted the money without signing the contract, I'm guessing Microsoft's lawyers will win.
