So, it looks like that senior writer at Blizzard who left the other week didn't just leave on his own. It's now looking like he was pressured into resigning by Blizzard HR because he was corroborating and supporting complaints by women at the company, judging by a couple of videos looking at his social media history and other communications.

One of his final social media posts before his resignation was "Word to the wise, if you're going to go to HR to corroborate complaints by people at the company, get a good lawyer first - you're going to need one."
Jesus, they're dumb.

Goddamn it, Berserk Games (makers of Tabletop Simulator)

https://docs.google.com/document/d/...=h.vqqwfq48sggg

Player Xoe Alfred is kicked from chat for mentioning that she's gay.

quote:

Transcribed Highlights
Xoe: Okay, so I've read the rules, so if I'm understanding them right, there is nothing wrong with me expressing my trans-ness or gay-ness
[MOD] Jorp: Maybe you didn't understand them correctly
Jorp: Odds are the autoban script will ban you and not me but
<Some chatter about I hope it's not against the rules>
Xoe: Funnily me talking about the history of expressing my gay-ness is against the rules.
<Some chatter asking Jorp to clarify>
Jorp: There's a big thing at the top, I think it's even in bold.
Xoe: Are you saying being gay is not family friendly?
<Kicked>

quote:

Xoe: Okay, so that makes sense to me, so then, why is it that I get kicked for sharing that I'm gay? Or banned for asking if being gay is considered family friendly?
CHRY: Discussing sexuality has no place in global chat.
Xoe: Why not?
CHRY: <The same link to global chat rules>
Xoe: So, then it isn't considered family friendly then
Is gender considered inappropriate for chat too? Like sharing that I'm trans?
CHRY: Tabletop simulator is about playing tabletop games, not a place to discuss sexuality, fetishes, politics. Keep that to your private lobbies or public chats where these things are the topic at hand.
Xoe: Are you suggesting that being trans is a fetish or political?

So Riot are offering 25% of annual salary, 3 months subsidized health benefits and other stuff if folks quit currently.

I'm not sure which way this will go. Like you're probably gonna get both folks who don't trust them to commit to change and folks upset Riot wants to change at all.
Oh, it'll work very well for Riot. Anybody who doesn't take the "please quit" money will then be told to shut up, you had your chance to bail, you must (both senses) like it here.

I think we now have an additional explanation for why (A) Microsoft backed down on "Actiblizz is bad" and (B) the board insisted on keeping Kotick. I mean, apart from capitalism and the old-boy network.

Merger negotiations take months, and nobody wanted to change CEOs in the middle of a merger. Similarly, Microsoft didn't want to leave any more anti-Blizz comments in the open record when they expected to announce the purchase within weeks. In my experience :eng99: of the software industry, the acquired company's CEO doesn't stay in power longer than a year-ish, but is shifted to some high-titled position and expected to leave to spend more time with their billions. The only exception I can think of is YouTube, although I'm sure there are others. Also in my experience, absolutely nothing happens at the acquired company for at least six months, because all departments stop dead to explain to their new overlords what exactly it is that they do, and why they should get more money to do it.

Sucks to be support staff (legal, in-house services, anything not related to the core business) because they get shoved out ASAP.

The main question right now is - what feature or features does Discord lack, that a replacement could bring to the table?
The next whatever-it-is will probably make it simple to embed video captures, without having to use YouTube as an intermediary. On the other hand, having YouTube stuck with the responsibility for vetting videos is probably legally valuable.

Another good feature would be able to create subcommunities on the fly: select N people from this server and create a subserver to, say, play Among us. Dissolve the subserver when the short-term game is done.

Kotaku did a lot more good reporting before Stephen Totilo and Jason Schreier both told G/O Media to go gently caress themselves. Nowadays the best reporting comes from Schreier, but he's at Bloomberg now and they've got a paywall.

Edit: If anyone is wondering why sites like AV Club, The Onion, The Takeout and Vichy Deadspin aren't mentioned in the tweet, they're part of a separate union umbrella in Chicago that The Onion formed several years ago.
The AV Club, among others, is owned by venture capitalists. Earlier this year the parent company told the writers to move to LA or they'd be fired, needless to say no cost-of-living adjustment was offered. To add a little zest to the situation, G/O media advertised several of their jobs before they'd decided to leave.

The Onion did not form G/O Media. Rather, a rump group of Gawker properties, owned by Univision for a bit, was sold off to the investment firm. The Onion hasn't been a separate media company since 2003, when the founders sold it to a different investment firm.

You need FMLA for an emergency? gently caress you, talk to the contractor. Somebody said "I don't have to answer your questions, red badge"? Whoops, sucks to be you.

The point of contracting is that it lets you treat workers as completely disposable. They are obligated to do the work, and you have no obligations (other than paycheck) to them.

Julian Gough, the guy who wrote the End Poem on Minecraft, never signed a contract waiving rights with Notch/Mojang/Microsoft. In a long, rambling essay he explains that he's "setting it free"; he now claims it's under one of the many open-source plans. It'll be interesting to see how this one shakes out. Given that he admits he accepted the money without signing the contract, I'm guessing Microsoft's lawyers will win.
