jim jones got brought up a few times but he did actual legit good work early on in his preaching career before he went full on cult leader he would preach socialism and then take his congregation to segregated resturants and have his mixed race congregants occupy every seat in a restaurant during the lunch rush, and if the restaurant refused to serve the black congregants the white members would refuse to order. this usually got got restaurants to end their racial serving policies within 1 or 2 visits and the jones congregation would show up a few times after services to reinforce it but then at a certain point jones congregation was successful and large enough that he started getting into the san francisco political scene and he'd motor his congregation out in all the buses his church owned to turn out votes for small local elections, and thats likely when he went full on corrupt (you cant really tell if his earlier good deeds were just clout chasing or genuine, and the difference doesnt matter) and likely when he started getting into speed and went full on messianic god complex by the time he got to guyana he would just point at male congregants and say, "What are you? Not down with the cause? Bend over, because I'm going to gently caress you, socialism demands bisexuality and also now youre a bottom" and by that point he had armed guards everywhere and an entire cabin fillled with meth pills and downers so he could chemically regulate his mood in whatever way he liked deborah layton's Seductive Poison is a pretty fun read on jonestown and really covers some of the day to day cult poo poo and how it transitioned from a local church to a death cult

i looked up phelps wikipedia page because i was curious about whether there was ever a point in his life where he wasnt an absolute piece of poo poo and holy gently caress, he might have just always been nuts. heres part of the story of how he got disbarred A formal complaint was filed against Phelps on November 8, 1977, by the Kansas State Board of Law Examiners, due to his conduct during a lawsuit, against a court reporter named Carolene Brady, who had failed to have a court transcript ready for Phelps on the day he asked for it. Although it did not affect the outcome of the case, Phelps sued her for $22,000. In the ensuing trial, Phelps called Brady to the stand, declared her a hostile witness, and then cross-examined her for nearly a week, during which he accused her of being a "slut", tried to introduce testimony from former boyfriends whom Phelps wanted to subpoena, and accused her of a variety of perverse sexual acts, ultimately reducing her to tears on the stand. Phelps lost the case. According to the Kansas Supreme Court: The trial became an exhibition of a personal vendetta by Phelps against Carolene Brady. His examination was replete with repetition, badgering, innuendo, belligerence, irrelevant and immaterial matter, evidencing only a desire to hurt and destroy the defendant. The jury verdict didn't stop the onslaught of Phelps. He was not satisfied with the hurt, pain, and damage he had visited on Carolene Brady. In an appeal, Phelps prepared affidavits swearing to the court that he had eight witnesses whose testimony would convince the court to rule in his favor. Brady obtained sworn, signed affidavits from those eight people in question, all of whom said that Phelps had never contacted them and that they had no reason to testify against Brady.
