Pretty good opener. Boimler and Rutherford have been practicing their giant Q-Tip jujitsu moves every night for a month so that they could defeat Mariner in a two on one fight. It just so happens today is the day Mariner offers to go train with them and when they're halfway competent at it Mariner decides to turn it up a notch and she gleefully destroys Rutherford and Boimler. Shaxs walks in and lets them know they've still got ten minutes to go.

So the basic premise of this episode is that Mariner might be a secretly programmed assassin/combat master and that when she gets stressed it unleashes her hidden potential. Or something.
