Anyway time to start posting the collection. It’ll be a bit at a time since there’s a lot.

So my absolute favorite modern independent Sofubi maker is ELEGAB! Naritada Shintani is a former animator who started making his 70s styled KAIJU on an imaginary Tokusatsu show of his own creation: Dokuro Taro!

I first discovered his works for myself when someone in a Sofubi forum was selling a figure of his and it looked interesting so I took a chance. When I received it, I was immediately taken in on just how amazing and wild it was. The PUPPET ALIEN!

His sculpt is great- it has a full 1970s styling to it that really shines through, and the detail of the suit’s zipper line on the back is full *chef’s kiss*. He also comes with 4 puppets that you can switch out on his hands. Nari San makes full little backstories for his figures that fit in well with the Showa era tokusatsu feeling (Puppet Alien uses his puppets to hypnotize his victims and kidnap them).

Elegab is a great maker and I’ve been collecting his works for around 6 years now. You can follow him on his Instagram @elegab_jp and he has a YouTube channel where he makes shorts and action scenes with his figures. Here’s the Dokuro Taro theme song! Oh yeah he’s a musician as well.

The next Elegab toy I got is Warsgon the war kaiju! Another insane concept from Nari that has all those little details I’ve come to expect from him. The tiny tank driver is great.

Here’s his YouTube commercial for a release of Warsgon from a couple months ago

Just arrived: Max Toy Co Halloween Zazan and Sadora from Return of Ultraman! These are sculpted by Pico Pico and honestly this line is my favorite modern Ultraman line.

Edit: the header card art by Mark Nagata is tops

Waited until all of these came into the mail before posting them up, but just got my last one.

These are Max Toy Ultraman from the same line as the two kaiju above!

I wound up with 5 of these mostly by accident...

I entered a lottery from OneUp for the white and black glitter Ultramen on the off chance I could purchase them.

The rainbow one is an older release I found on Mandarake, and I wanted to test out their buying process so I ordered him, but also had the silver glitter version in my cart. They came from 2 different locations, and I didn't pay enough attention when getting the payment confirmation emails so I got both.

Then I wound up winning the lottery for the two OneUp entries. :confuoot:

I got my first one from Mandarake in the mail (the clear rainbow one). I was excited for the others, and then Max Toy put up an order for a clear sunset colorway. I like the rainbow one enough that I went ahead and got that one...

Apparently I collect Ultramen now... :homebrew:

That Elegab Warsgon is great! He exudes chaos, and I really like the airplane hands, haha.

Dang instant MaxToy collection! You should follow his IG and get on the mailing list. There’s another Ultraman colorway coming soon and you won’t have to pay international shipping if you buy from him haha

Usually I find Sofubi for the Ultramen themselves(or indeed most humanoid ones like those or for Super Sentai or Kamen Rider) to look terrible, but the semi SD proportions on those make them look a lot better than the normal ones

Yeah Pico Pico is the sculptor for that entire line of Max Toy Ultras and their kaiju and he is completely knocking it out of the park. There are also Godzilla ones that aren’t licensed for the USA so you can only get them in Japan at events. I’ll take photos of the few I have later. The Shin Godzilla is one of my favorite sculpts of him.

I did get on the Max Toy mailing list, and I follow him on Instagram, so hopefully that helps. I keep all notifications turned off and missed his posting about Sofubi Man a week or so ago, so it seems they go quick.

I've seen Pico Pico mentioned in a few different places. Do they just sculpt for creators or do they have their own stuff as well?

Pico Pico sculpts a lot of his own stuff. A lot is sold through the Dai Kaiju Salon. His IG is here:

More of the Elegab collection:

This is TUNNELON! One of Nari’s favorite sculpts and mine as well. This wild tunnel kaiju has a great look and paint job. Apparently the tunnel is actually one near where He grew up in Hiroshima.

Also a favorite is BUKIMINDA! Really a lot of fun alien piloting a robot. You can remove the pilot and have other similar sized figures from the Elegab line fit in there.

Unfortunately Bukiminda is no longer being made as the mold was damaged.

GATOS Y VATOS

Bonus: hot pink Tunnelon colorway.

Colorways are the big draw on a lot of Sofubi. Have a favorite figure? Gotta chase down those different colors! The combo versatility of being able to cast the vinyl in a huge spectrum then the makers painting them in runs make it more fun!

I was an idiot and have been trying to get all the colorways of Elegab’s “King Smog” figure, which takes up a huge amount of shelf space.

Thou art not a crook!

I'm on a Nakatomi mailing list, and they just sent out a note about an Ultraman print they're releasing tomorrow that looked relevant:
https://www.nakatomiinc.com/2021/10/15/new-ultraman-vs-alien-baltanprint-from-attack-peter-drops-tue-19th-2pm-central-be-there/

They have other Ultraman prints in their shop but I don't really care for them - this new one looks pretty rad though.

Anyway, post more photos please! I'm really enjoying seeing these and I've been going down the eBay rabbit hole watch-listing some too, they're awesome.

Here’s a jumbo boy: Sunguts made Shin Godzilla 4th form! This is one of my absolute favorite Shin sculpts. It has that full Showa era feeling I love but with the modern G. He is also enormous and the 2nd and 3rd form Shins that Sunguts makes are in scale with him. I hope to acquire those someday. I also have an “Awakening” version in the movie colors that I’ll take a photo of later.

Also just a size comparison to a MaxToy Ultraman

That Ultraman print is great! I'll have to keep an eye on the artist. We moved not too long ago and finding space for all the wall art we had at the old house has been a challenge.

I love love love that pink Tunnelon too!!! Growing up through the late 80s/90s anything neon . Love the group photo too; I like how the different colors bring out different details in the vinyl.

I've only ever watched modern Godzilla movies (2000 forward), but there are a bunch on HBO right now I'm going to have to check out. Feels like I'll have to pick up some sort of Godzilla eventually, heh.

Edit: I was curious about the other Godzillas and found this image on google.

That's a fun set!

Yeah I'm hoping one day to be able to get the movie colorway set of the 2nd and 3rd form types, but I don't know if that will ever happen. I don't like paying flipper prices for Sunguts' works because they are usually astronomical I remember a couple years back somebody on an FB group I know paid over $2k for a Sunguts big Shin Godzilla. For that price he could have taken a trip to Japan during one of the events that they are sold (since they are event license only items) and got only not the figure, but a good trip out of the whole thing.

I'm bummed that this is the 2nd year I'm missing D Con. I was going to share a table with Ichimiya (Sunguts) but frankly COVID is still to loving scary for me to be in a giant enclosed place with that many people; he decided to stay home as well.

Really digging the pictures. Love seeing people’s collections and just being exposed to more artists.

Hope these aren’t against the thread as they are not sofubi per se, but are part of the vinyl artist gatcha. I found two more artists who’s designs clicked, Shoko Nakazawa and Core Kashi. Just ordered some small items to add to the collection before starting to look for larger figures.(also pictured the VAG 28 Negora set)

Also Shoko Nakazawa's works are really good but I don't have much. I WAS able to get this GID Byron at the 2016 D-Con. I love it a lot!

There were a few really cool figures from that artist (or on his site). Andy the cat was one, I think?

That Byron is really nice. I appreciate your photo replies. One because your collection is really cool to see and it also is nice to see more things of similar type in a more natural setting than an eBay thumbnail.

Attack Peter does some collabs with Mondo doing Godzilla prints, and they put out a statuette in that style recently; they go fast as heck off the site though, I think the only in-stock thing is a few sizes of a Godzilla-Mothra shirt.

Audrey II arrived, and I was not prepared for how big it ended up being (rainbow pint glass for size comparison).

I'll have to scare up the rest of my meager collection, since thanks to GYV's explanation, I guess some of my guys actually do fit the bill.

All of these are extremely My Thing and I've always really wanted to collect these things but, man, they seem expensive as hell for somebody in the states. Is there some kind of secret underground soft vinyl store that I don't know about or am I going to be stuck browsing Ebay and trying to snipe things on the cheaper side?

It's a mixed bag- there are some good places to get indy artist's works in the States.

https://www.myplasticheart.com/

https://toytokyo.com/

https://www.lulubelltoys.com/

https://wootbear.com/toys/

https://www.kaijulegion.com/

https://www.toyartgallery.com/

http://maxtoyco.com/

https://cat-magic-toys.myshopify.com/

And then going on IG and following artists you like to get in on lotteries and new releases as well.
