This thread is a splinter from the Media thread in relation to just how freaking awful Foreign Intelligence Groups are!

The main players!
Central Intelligence Agency: One of the worst of the lot, partially because they are so bad at it.
Committee for State Security/Комитет государственной безопасности (КГБ)/(KGB): The Soviet Era Intelligence and Security Agency
Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB RF; Russian: Федеральная служба безопасности Российской Федерации (ФСБ): Modern Russian Intelligence and Security Agency. Really bad at covering its tracks.
Secret Intelligence Service/MI5: UK Foreign Intelligence - James Bond need not apply

Cefte posted:

Pedantic, but MI5 was historically counter-intelligence and domestic security. MI6 was foreign intelligence.
General Directorate for External Security Direction / générale de la sécurité extérieure, DGSE: Arguably one of the more effective agencies during the cold war - Ironic.
Mossad / הַמּוֹסָד / Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations - One of the more effective, if not oddest of the bunch
Federal Intelligence Service / Bundesnachrichtendienst: Ze Germans
Ministry of State Security / 国安部: Chinese Civilian Intelligence agency

There's more, every country has them but these are the most common ones.

This thread is largely around the discussion/debate of the effectiveness, the various crimes and plots, and the state of intelligence today as well as Intelligence news.

I'll kick off the thread with one of my favorite CIA ops that was partially successful (which for the CIA might as well be a total success): Project Azorian

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Azorian

TL;DR: Project Azorian was a covert operation to retrieve a sunken Soviet Ballistic Missile sub (K-129) off the bottom of the ocean using a specially built recovery ship, using a cover story about mining for manganese modules on the ocean floor. Was partially successful other than the capture vehicle broke some of the grabber fingers on the way up and dropped half the recovered sub

There was plans to try again prior to someone blowing the whistle on the mission.

Also the Darknet Diaries coverage of the NSO group spying and attempting to attack various groups is pretty good listening
