ST. PAUL—Activating nearly 3,000 personnel, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz deployed the National Guard to Minneapolis Friday ahead of next week’s police shooting. “We understand that tempers are flared right now, and we urge you to remain calm and demonstrate lawfully following next Wednesday’s tragedy,” said Walz, who explained that local officials would be imposing curfews throughout the Twin Cities metropolitan area within the next two weeks in response to the impending officer-involved shooting. “We have reason to believe the next shooting of an unarmed resident will be exceptionally egregious, so we’re giving the National Guard a bit of a head start. Know that I will share the same sentiment as the many of you who will pour into the streets in only a few days’ time, but peaceful protesting will be the answer.” At press time, Walz added that he was prepared to deploy another 1,000 troops to stem protests that would arise in response to the massive bloodshed resulting from police clashes with the original group of protesters.

Slightly serious post though, the powers that be love the National Guard because they can be ordered to do just about anything and can't legally say "no."

The government shies away from using the regular Army for this because it would detract from training to fight China and/or Russia in a land war, and mean that they would not be available as a quick response force.

Holy poo poo!

AUSTIN, Texas — In a dive into new political and legal water, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has initiated the first-ever border security operations in which thousands of National Guard troops — newly imbued with civilian arrest authority and given 40 hours of traditional police training in the use of deadly force — have started handcuffing illegally entering migrants on state trespassing charges.

Small-scale soldier arrest operations began quietly this week as an unprecedented addition to the state’s ongoing “Operation Lone Star” in close physical coordination with a pre-existing border surge of some 1,000 Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers concentrated in Val Verde and Starr counties, but also expected to happen elsewhere. Abbott has been signaling for weeks that he was preparing a more aggressive use of the National Guard.

The national guard has been deployed to both protect and work in the cheese curd factories

Those cheese factories are no joke. I transported a guy once whose face had been cut in half the long way in an accident at a cheese factory.

I don't know about the national guard specifically, but the middle class is overrepresented in America's military.

My prediction for the newest use of the national guard: stacked along the border as a temporary wall.

3,000 Guardsmen are already on the border, costing $800 million annually.

This is one of the big changes since 9/11. The national Guard is now a a force of the regular rotation schedule. If you join the guard you can expect to be deployed overseas at some point.

This is so the active duty can focus on getting ready to fight Russia or China or be on a moment's alert to invade Poland or Ukraine or whatever the hell.

Palladium posted:

there are consequences for being stupid enough to join the guard

True enough, but the country doesn't have universal healthcare or college and you can get both by joining the Guard.

You can buy into Tricare Reserve Select, which is a portable, low premium, low deductible, low out of pocket health insurance program that is pretty close to what a public option ought to be, and you can get the GI Bill.

So you have to put up with being sent to Kuwait or Ethiopia for a year, but you won't have student debt if you use your education benefits wisely.

Since we don't have a draft the government wants to keep things this way to keep people signing up for the discount military. Use them like Active Duty but only have to pay them AD money when they're deployed.

There's National Guard being sent to all kinds of out of the way places you don't hear about.

Remember Kosovo? Still there, it's been a mainly Guard mission since 2006.

Did you know we still have troops in the Sinai watchin the border between Egypt and Israel as a result of a deal worked out by the Carter Administration?

Yup, still Guardsmen there.

Kuwait, Iraq, Syria, lotta NG there too.

Tulsi Gabbard just got back from a deployment to Africa with her unit.

That's one thing it doesn't guarantee. There have been plenty of people with military records who got deported.
