upgraded to 11. they removed the "never combine taskbar buttons" option? gently caress this poo poo. my taskbar is 99% empty and the two windows open are combined.

they also made it so that the taskbar context menu only appears if you right-click the start button when previously it would appear if you right-click anywhere on the taskbar. i'm super used to launching task manager by right-clicking the taskbar so it's driving me crazy.

that ofc is a minor nuisance and the worst part(s) of the win11 UI is the removal of full-screen start and its replacement with this bullshit:

there's no way to disable or hide that "Recommended" section so it is just foreverially wasted space. previously i've always used full-screen start as it's the best loving way to do poo poo. pin your primary apps to the taskbar and pin your secondary apps to the start menu where they appear as big buttons that you can launch with winkey+click button. now instead you've got a 6x3 grid of medium sized icons along with a bunch of dumb wasted space it's so stupid

sometimes when i reboot after installing a microsoft update (windows cumulative or even .net framework cumulative) the audio output devices for my graphics card disappear (HDMI/DP audio out). rebooting again brings em back, truly bizarre. also i've noticed it often likes to reset whatever output format i select for an audio device, keep having to switch it from 16bit/24khz to 24bit/48khz (or 24bit/192khz for my headphones connected via S/PDIF)

was going to post about how annoying it is to interact with onedrive from the system tray but they've "fixed it" in the most unintuitive way possible. left-click shows the usual onedrive menu and right-click shows the same menu however the cog in the top-right of the menu also expands to reveal a menu atop the menu ahahah

edit: no wait it's actually fuckin worse. one right-click shows the regular menu and spawns a tool-tip below the cog then if you right-click again it expands the menu from the cog like what in the gently caress

I could be wrong because this is just a baseless assumption on my part, but as horrifying as "sharepoint as a backend" is in general, I assume that with office 365 it's really more just like "sharepoint is another frontend to the same data" on the backend anyway? They still shouldn't integrate it with sharepoint because it makes everything about teams more complicated and dumb but I imagine that it's not like stuff in teams is breaking because it actually has to go through sharepoint apis or something

yeah you're probably right. obviously they'd need proper teams endpoints to do RTSP stuff, amongst other things. in those cases if it is using SPO on the backend wouldnt be an issue.

honestly it's hard to tell what is breaking most of the time when the app acts up but im p sure a lot of it is on that electron front-end. that said i just did 4 days of 8 hour teams calls this week for training and it didn't explode. ofc i didn't try to do anything else on my laptop whilst in the calls, doubt thta would have ended well.

or the way Sharepoint online has no way of just right clicking and opening links in new windows when in the page or document library, you gotta Get A Link instead, which then also has some janky rear end parameters randomly attached it them.

i love how if i open a document from sharepoint and it loads in like excel or word online i have no way of navigating from the opened document back to the original folder in sharepoint. at work ive got a bunch of docs in SPO bookmarked for convenience but i have no idea where they actually are in sharepoint.

oh also sharepoint URLs are amazing. just incredibly massive, even the special sharing ones you can copy.

a few hours ago after a reboot i discovered that my audio output in windows had been set to mono. i guess at some point i must have accidentally clicked the button to enable mono output when i was changing output devices as i often do.

why microsoft decided to put that option front-and-centre in the sound settings is beyond me. literally the last thing anyone would want to enable.

microsoft have started pushing win11 22H2 over windows update. the list of new features is, for lack of a better word, lame as heck: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/windows/inside-this-update-93c5c27c-f96e-43c2-a08e-5812d92f220d. also ive heard theyve hosed with the audio section in the settings app even more by further burying previously convenient and easy-to-access options.

however because im a sucker for punishment as well as a literal sucker im going and installing it on my home PC. looking forward to getting ruined

edit: i've got no use for it on my PC at home which is just hooked up to my garbage sony bravia TV that only does 720p except sometimes 1080p idk. however ive got an ultrawide at work so looking forward to using it there

so it appears that since installing 22H2 write speeds to my NAS via SMB3 have almost doubled. my NAS is connected to my PC via 10GbE and prior to installing the update i'd usually get around 500MB/s when copying from local SSD to the NAS. now since installing the update i'm getting around 1GB/s (averages between 800 and 900MB/s).

im not 100% sure whether or not installing the update is responsible for the change and it could just be a coinkydink but nothing else has changed with my setup other than installing the update. either way it's good news for the craven dingus data hermit named Pile Of Garbage.

this is btw why if you're on windows 11 you likely have two incompatible versions of teams installed. one is the one you use and the other is the non-electron one.

isnt that just the user-mode installed one and the enterprise "machine-wide" installed one, both of which are identical otherwise?

Pile Of Garbage
May 28, 2007

Cybernetic Vermin posted:

i *believe* the "machine-wide" one is indeed an edge evergreen trial run. i think both the way it is installed and the weird integrations it has with the garbage start menu is part of the api set that "platform" offers. supposedly teams as such is a single code-base, so they shouldn't differ heavily otherwise.

i doubt that the machine-wide installed version is being used as a trial-run for anything as that is the specific distribution which microsoft recommends for enterprises that want to roll-out teams to their fleet via SCCM/MECM or something else. given how averse enterprises are to change it's unlikely microsoft would recommend a package that was secretly a beta-channel test mode or some poo poo.

HOWEVER the thing is that it really doesn't matter how teams is installed as the application updates itself internally. at least it does some electron update thing and then tells you to "reload the app" to finish updating. all of which im certain is just downloading new js and assets.

another thing worth mentioning is that microsoft electron apps in general still don't have proper integration with the windows UI experience. for example in win10/11 if you hover the mouse cursor over the full-screen button of either teams or vs code the little screen snapping thingo doesn't appear. this is understandable as they're not proper windows apps.

so it appears that at some point after the win11 22h2 update but before the october cumulative update microsoft finally added back audio output device switching in the system tray (that they removed that feature pissed me off because i often switch between my TV audio and headphones):

https://i.imgur.com/O1DIb9a.mp4

also in the october cumulative update they added tabs to file explorer which they originally promised in the 22h2 update but apparently it was too hard. gotta say it sucks and is clearly hacked-on as there's a big delay from when you click the new-tab button to one appearing, presumably because it has to spin up a separate explorer.exe process in a tree outside of the parent but also linked to it or some poo poo idk
