it's actually a separate app not a beta feature. main app is trying to remain small and fast so they seem reluctant to add features. i just keep Everything running in my systray.

i've been meaning to try windows search again though and see if it's improved at all because i use power toys a lot and power toys includes a pop-up bar ("powertoys run") that uses windows search indexes but is also way less lovely than windows start menu "searching" with respect to finding files and apps vs searching the web. one thing people forget/don't realize is you have to add folders that are outside the defaults if you want them indexed ie i have a c:\src\ folder for source code.

if windows search gave you a "index meta-data but not file content" option i'd just index the whole drat drive and not even bother with Everything

i'm in the options now and i forgot how much of a turd they are

want to change which file types are fully indexed vs metadata only? here's a long, unsearchable list for you to go through

want to filter out a particular subfolder name universally? nope sorry you have to exclude every instance manually

goddamn it's so bad

e: oh, of course. there are two options screens now. the original one is now the 'advanced' one, which has an 'advanced' button for what i guess are now 'advanced advanced' options

e2: at least the new screen gives you a big obvious button to index the entire hdd. annoyingly i can't force it to immediately index everything though so i can't search for anything i just added to the index. lol. lmao. what a loving joke

Anyway that poo poo about there being 2 indistinguishable versions of teams reminded me that in windows 10/11 there are currently two apps called "Remote Desktop" that are functionally completely unrelated. The only way I have to tell one from another is the launch icon, and since I'm regularly using both, launching remote desktop from the keyboard has become a real chore because the start menu always picks the wrong one. also the new remote desktop for VDI is janky poo poo that fails all the time for no reason

another few days with 11 at home and it's shocking how janky it is. the only part i love is right clicking on the maximize button for moving windows around so i don't have to setup fancy zones in power tools

e: i could care less about the start menu changes. some things look better but are flaky. centering the icons is handy on ultra-wides. winget is nice but still missing a lot of stuff i need so i setup choco anyway. very meh, the star trek films windows version curse remains in effect

however because im a sucker for punishment as well as a literal sucker im going and installing it on my home PC. looking forward to getting ruined

I actually prefer the handsfree profile for meetings since it seems to have lower latency. It usually works on the Jabra headset, but sometimes it randomly doesn't!

i have some cheap soundcore (ie anker) headphones that work quite well but if i go into headset mode they kinda suck and then they also stop working properly when i switch back to headphone mode. i have to cycle them off and on again to fix it. so dumb so i prefer to leave them in headphones mode (latency is fine) and use my laptop's mic (also fine)
