i dont have outlook installed cause its so trash. i just use win10 mail which is far and away the least bad email client

the correct way to create a task from an email is to reply to the email with the message "please open a ticket for this" . then a ticket will automatically be generated if the issue is important enough.

lol i didnt consider task creation for personal email

i think outlook may be so bad these days that notes, which hasnt changed in 20 years, may now be a better for email. exchange is infinitely better than domino tho, that ones still not even close.

the windows client does the reminders for old meetings too. thats almost certainly the favorite feature of some boomer product owner at microsoft who thinks its critical that you know you missed a meeting while you were out last week.

they cant get images and text to work reliably in teams, a piece of software that handles text and images almost exclusively. i dont think the office client team cares about anything

i could maybe see caring that i missed a meeting that started 10 minutes ago, but thats about it.

carry on then posted:yesterday i was locked out of my email for a little while because a server-side log file filled up, which causes a constant error dialog in the client when trying to do anything. they had to do manual maintenance on the server to clear it out. lol yeah. notes databases are a minefield of maintenance requirements that vary wildly based on how the server is configured, how the db is configured, and how the db has been managed. transaction logging has multiple modes, 1 of which requires external backup software to manage. if you're using the one that requires backup software and the backup software isnt running and/or isnt working properly you can end up with a huge number of transaction logs that havent been archived and it makes the db slower and slower the longer it goes without being backed up properly. they could probably fix it with a copy compact which basically creates a new copy of the database and compacts everything which includes truncating all the logs. this new copy also needs to be backed up properly cause its technically a brand new database unrelated to your old db. i do not miss that poo poo one bit.

anyone still using on prem exchange instead of office 365 deserves what they get
|

whatever the excuse people give for on prem exchange, the real reason is they're way out of compliance on licensing.

|
you dont need full azure ad for office 365 tho.

idk what those are, but if its a linux thing its probably not needed on windows

skype and skype for business have nothing to do with each other. office communicator became lync which then became skype for business after the skype purchase. skype for business had all the chat history and everything stored locally (or in outlook lmao) so it was a disaster if you wanted to use it across multiple devices. then in teams they made all the chat server side which is great. but then someone had the idea that the chats should all be based on office groups in office 365 which are based on sharepoint. so if you ever wondered why file sharing sucks rear end in teams its because its all based in sharepoint. and then you pile on the terrible javascript client and its just a mess. they still dont have an API for getting chat events in a reasonable mechanism (i.e. websockets) cause they dont want 3rd party teams clients
|
![]() |
|
nah cause if you want to do non-client stuff there are apis for things (including notifications via webhooks) that are platform agnostic. just nothing that would work for a client.

|
i would write one that just does chat and nothing else
|
![]() |

nobody uses the "teams" in teams its all 1:1 and group chats and microsoft hates it cause it means nobody is using the sharepoint bullshit and if nobody is using the sharepoint bullshit then it means all of that was a waste of time.

CRIP EATIN BREAD posted:i just clicked to see what "immersive reader" did and it's some large type thing where it does TTS but I was unable to exit the view and had to quit teams and restart it. its the same thing as the "reader" button on edge and safari intended to create text only versions of web pages. why in the world you'd want that for a chat application i cannot fathom. my best guess is its an electron thing they just left enabled

i liked last month when a teams update broke using cursor keys to move around text boxes. like how do you even do that?

the icon grid start menu is the dumbest poo poo in the world. bring back the app list w/ live tiles on the side.
|

they're great. ios/android has bad versions called widgets that dont really work because of all the wasted space in the bad icon grid design

qirex posted:it is a bad ui and was from the beginning and the marketplace responded to it with profound indifference and I can't really think of any way it could have demonstrably failed harder the lack of apps killed windows mobile. live tiles were still superior mobile ui. remember that when live tiles existed, you still had 50 pages of random icons on ios. it wasnt until later that they copied windows and let you have 1 page of apps you cared about and a list of apps if you swiped over where the pages of random icons used to be. they still hosed it up in not scrolling the main page vertically, but its still better than the old ios design. now they've added a bad version of live tiles in the form of widgets and they're adding a bad version of the windows mobile glance screen to the lock screen.

Cold on a Cob posted:i like my ios widgets, seeing my top 3 tasks, next calendar events, and my latest 3 email when i unlock my phone is good and lets me just keep notifications turned off yeah live tiles are great. they're even better if you dont have a bunch of wasted whitespace around them. now imagine if, when you looked at your phone before unlocking, showed your next appointment from your calendar. and by default it was just white on black text so you can glance at it and see it in high contrast with low battery usage cause its an oled screen

they're planning to replace the windows 10 mail/calendar app with a piece of poo poo electron outlook app and its gonna suck cause there wont be any working mail/calendar apps anymore
|
![]() |
|
yeah the outlook app sucks poo poo. in the live tile for win 10 mail it would be like a 3rd the size and would show your next appointment whenever it is, not a pointless day view.

the windows 10 mail app isnt any form of outlook which is why its good

~Coxy posted:this is a really basic bitch but why the gently caress does it include the name and timestamp when I try to copy a snippet of text from a chat message. its litterrally that the browser fails to determine what to select when you drag over the message so it incorrectly includes other elements in the selection. this is because teams is bad and html is bad and javascript is bad and chome is bad

windows 11 is like windows 8 where they hosed up the start menu so everyone avoids it.
