Osseus 49/9-Z

Traveling relatively light, Osseus herds Null away from the aether rays and checks his weapons crate for stowaways, his four mechatendrils shifting about as they take further inventory and help settle his long guns in their proper places. He has time to assist Walter with extra shares of common cargo.

A tinny, staticky voice emerges from the strange vox-caster built into his unusual armor, "Unlikely to find carnivorous sand even in warp-tainted regions - warp energies preferentially interact with living tissue, Walter."

His mechanicum-enhanced brain recollecs that Vaporius has occasional visits from Rogue Traders and other Imperial agents, but few are welcome among the abhumans, partly because of an aversion to outsiders, and partly because the Imperium is insanely xenophobic. The heat, low humidity, and abrasive sand all read clearly as hazardous on his sensors, though these sensations are more intellectual than instinctive to the transhuman Heretek, and he puts the mission priorities above comfort. "Suggest we proceed to Atar, south-by-southwest. Each city-state is separate, Atar is at crossroads of trade between them, greatest probability of outsider presence being within normal parameters."

CL Koronus Expanse, minor success.

Walter Irons
"Oh." He scratches at a cheek pebbled with faint, tiny scars. "Maybe that was mites. I didn't ask them."
The Heretek's mechatendrils shiver as his cogitators pivot around this more literal explanation. "A just conclusion. Mutant sand fleas and desert flies capable of aggressive phage behavior. Best practice is to wear sealed helmet."

Listening patiently to the suggestions of the warband, Osseus is not convinced that Vyr is the correct priority. "Affirmative, water is power on this planet. A fact that the priest-kings leverage to maintain dominance. Conclusion: to control water on Vaporius demands we conquer it completely, a task with low probability of success in current conditions. Corollary: given prominence of water on Vaporian politics, Vyr will be most powerful city-state. Other cities easier to infiltrate."

Recognizing Walter's original advice as prudent, Osseus partly agrees. "Meh'phi and Atar are cities with highest cross-probability of transit survival and successful infiltration. Imperial antagonism will fail if these initial parameters are not met."

"I am called Osseus Forty-nine-nine-zed, deputized in Koronus Sector to pursue religious extremist wanted for crimes in multiple systems. Conjecture: extremist may not have visited Atar, but ethical imperative dictates that local population be informed of danger." The heretek is aware of his strange diction, and makes extra effort to use words that might be only partially understood by the non-native speaker. Gesturing to his web blaster and various nonlethal grenades, "visual inspection will confirm that these weapons are less lethal, intended for live capture of antagonists."

Looking at the customs scroll written in unfamiliar script, he adds, "Query: is written or binaric lexicon available to assist completion of identification form? Language barrier persists."

The machine-man Osseus's posture tilts in agreement with Walter, sensing nuances of the conversation that the telepathic ritual adds beyond his usual logical mind. The others were coming on very strong. He doesn't remove his helmet to eat, content with taking liquid nourishment through an interface tube in the palm of his hand. "Indeed. Your title is princess. Your lineage is of priest-kings who rule this world. Intelligent and far seeing. Already perceived Imperium as dangerous, then asked to greet condescending offworld traders with redundant knowledge. Obvious that priest-kings have already hidden weapons and forbidden technology to represent lesser threat. Clever deception."

Osseus 49/9-Z

Bored by the micro-maneuvers of politicking, the tiny advantages of information asymmetry, and attempts to force each other to reveal or commit to things against their better judgement, Osseus nonetheless maintains silence. As if these minced words amount to anything more than ego. Diplomacy was a part of this mission, and he can see that neither force nor deception are likely to succeed, so others are free to play those games that he neither cares for nor understands. Instead, he carefully scans the various pieces of technology and artifice that those of Atar possess, trying to identify if anything is worth reproducing on his own, or learning how to do so. Trade for the wonders of Vaporius is one thing, but stealing their secrets would be quite a bit more valuable.

But the chance to hunt down and capture one of these undying psychic beasts? That seems like something truly fascinating. Working alongside the guards and ritualists of the native tribes would also allow an up-close demonstration of their tactics and arms. "Indeed, Dromedar. Capturing one of these 'unquenched' for study would be a worthy goal. I will join you."

"Let him study the remains, then. We will destroy the creature and I shall have its skull."

"I will be of assistance, this problem is tractable." Osseus insists. The Astartes are unrivaled killing machines, but they often lack imagination. If the creatures refuse to die, more exotic means are necessary to keep them from continuing their rampages.

-----

As the combat crew embarks on the Rhino, Osseus has a pair of devices that resemble reinforced promethium canisters, with some glasscrete portions replacing one of the sidewalls, and custom archaeotech circuitry and mechanical joints reinforcing the input port. "This will contain the essence of the creatures, after their corporeal forms are eliminated. Not enough power to capture all encountered, but enough for several persistent spirits." He continues to tinker with them on the drive, multiple arms manipulating and micro-welding the material simultaneously, while Osseus checks the data readings with some kind of cybernetic impulse unit. "Traps are ready. Query: do unquenched utilize manufactured arms? Or is regression to feral instincts total? Suggest allowing ranged weaponry to dispatch enemy if they must close distance."

Osseus 49/9-Z

Accepting Guidance. Osseus thinks psychic powers are cool. He'll start near Walter, a few meters behind the Captain.
Initiative = 16, with Combat Formation - so everyone gets +1 to Initiative and can use +7 instead of their own Agility Bonus if they like.
Agility 60 vs. 55 = 1 DoF, Osseus falls down

Adjusting his Auspex scan to penetrate the surface and notice the subterranean structure, Osseus's focus is divided and he doesn't see the shifting cloud of sand until it's too late. Luckily, his warning helped the others move into a favorable formation ahead of time, reacting more quickly to the ambush. Though Osseus is knocked off-balance and down to his knees, he nonetheless readies his razor web and calls calmly to the others, though vaguely enough not to give away any plans in case the unquenched understand language, "Remain focused. This position is near-optimal, as he begins to aim at several of the unquenched followers who have yet to enter melee combat.

As Osseus analyzes the situation, his Protector Skull, Null chatters rapidly in binary, its weaponry humming as its machine spirit synchronizes with Osseus's MIU.

Osseus 49/9-Z

From his position of cover, Osseus's machine mind calculates his trajectories and likely collateral damage, deeming it more likely that the psychic creatures will harm his ally should he do nothing. With one hand, he activates his soul harvester, ready to trap any of the unquenched that should enter incorporeal form. With a second gyro-stabilized motion, he aims his razor web to entrap the unquenched engaged with Dromedar, carefully avoiding his ally (55 vs. 65 = 2 DoS). https://orokos.com/roll/934406. Should they have the agility to escape the blast area, they will be easy prey for Osseus's allies in the open.

https://orokos.com/roll/934408 5 damage, pen 3, Blast 2 versus the two unquenched in melee with Dromedar, and the blast narrowly avoids the space marine.

Anyone who takes damage from that is crippled 3 for the rest of the combat - if they take more than a half action on their turn, they take 3 R damage unaffected by armor or toughness.
Anyone in the blast has to make an Agility test at -10 or get snared in the web.

Osseus 49/9-Z

Continuing to analyze the quickly changing battlefield, Osseus's lightning-fast calculations conclude that the Astartes are easily a match for the psychic ghosts in hand combat. The unquenched leader is less clear. Further data beneficial: opportunity to assess capabilities of local captain and more mature psychic beast. Do not impede. Risk to Walter: minimal, he concludes.

Given all of this information, the horde arising from the sands occupies Osseus's attention, both in immediacy, but also logically. "0101011101010001001001 01001 01001000100 10 01001001 0100 1001 001 0 01 00010 0010001001000100111010101 01001001 01001 01001000100 10 01001001 0100 1001 001 0 01 00010 101010001001001 01001 01001000100 10 01001001 0100 1001 001 0 01 00010 00010001001000100111010101000100 10 01001001 0100 10," he hisses at a frequency bordering subsonic, the binaric code compressed into an instant, issuing a priority command to Protector Skull Null. Simultaneously seeing the effects of the spirit trap begin to work, Osseus's dendritic tentacles snake out into coils lifting him from his prone position of cover and he quickly advances towards the disembodied spirit slain by Dromedar, attempting to capture it before it has time to flee. Opportunity to capture many lesser spirits. Coordinate timing, he cogitates.

The servo-skull responds in a binaric string conforming receipt of the command, and swivels in midair, aiming, then bringing its grenade launcher arm to bear. With a click and then a thump, a blight grenade flies into the midst of the emerging horde. The withering blast would devastate ordinary mortals, it remains to be seen how much of their biology has been replaced by their psychic spirit.

With the explosion nearby freeing the souls of many unquenched, Osseus prepares to capture as many as possible, while watching the ritualists in anticipation for their reactions. Frustration? Awe? They witness the superiority of a machine god. "Encouraging," his synthesized voice calls out. "Continue. Be wary of further subterfuge, creatures have demonstrated ability to delay offensive abilities to maximize effectiveness.

Servo Skull attack roll: https://orokos.com/roll/938924 (Success, 71 vs. 80)
Servo Skull damage roll: https://orokos.com/roll/938925 9E ignores armor, blast 6, toxic 2 - if I understand how hordes work, that's 7 magnitude damage from the blast? Test against is at a -20 to avoid another hit.
Osseus's two actions used to stand from prone and advance 4m nearer the action, and letting the trap hoover these baddies.
