I think you misread that announcement. Only the server will need Plex Pass, people that connect to it can do so without. And they removed the $5 fee from the Plex app so it's actually easier for people to connect than before.

+1 on the HD HomeRun tuner. It's been so stable that I haven't even had to reboot the thing in literal years, not since I had to move it to a different spot.
