i am not a surgeon
I was working at a place that did full time pair programming when the pandemic hit. In person it was fine (still exhausting, but a good way to learn and most everyone there was someone into it and easy to get along with), but doing that remotely, not being able to fully communicate with a person cranked up the exhaustion and tedium by a factor of 10.

A few of us jumped ship to a more freestyle place together because we really enjoyed working with each other, but now we just pair for a short period if something goes sideways and need to get unblocked and we're all happier for it.

God help you if you get into the ball and chain scenario where one person has no loving idea what's going on and has no interest in doing more than pressing the key you tell them to
