Problem description: I am unable to upgrade to Windows 10 Home from Windows 8.1 Enterprise edition. When mounting the ISO and running the setup, I get to around 70% completion on the blue loading screen before it stops, and gives me a 'Windows 10 has failed to install' error popup. The windows 8.1 version is Build 9600.

Attempted fixes: I have tried a reboot and to change from keeping only personal files to keeping no files, with the same result.

Recent changes: I've made no changes.

Operating system: Windows 8.1 Enterprise 64-bit. Windows is not activated.

System specs: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TIM) i5-4670K CPU @ 340GHz. 16.0GB RAM.

Location: UK

I have Googled and read the FAQ: Yes

Please take pity on me, and sorry if I need to include more details.

Why not save yourself some hassle and just reinstall Win10 fresh off a USB stick? Is there some reason you want to do the not-recommended upgrade path? If you're OK with attempting to install without keeping personal files, a fresh install with the media creation tool is the way to go. It will wipe out all the crap remnants of Win8 and actually save you some drive space of not having a Windows.old folder afterwards.

Otherwise, I would first start troubleshooting this by maybe activating your Win8 version, followed by disabling startup programs, anti-viruses and making sure nothing excessive is running when the upgrade process. Seems to me like its barfing trying to access some system files that are probably locked by the OS. You might also want to verify you are running this as administrator too.

Edit; I've never attempted a Win8 Enterprise --> Win10 Home upgrade before, but I have a feeling that this could be also an issue. Lastly, double check that you are upgrading to the same X86 or X64 version. Going from Win8 32bit to Win10 Home x64 I do believe requires a fresh install rather than an upgrade, but don't quote me.

Thanks for your response. To be honest the major issue is that I don't have ready access to a large enough USB to create the media to then boot off of. I was trying to exhaust other options first, but most likely a clean install is the way to go.
In terms of the recommended upgrade path - from what I can see via Google no such path exists for 8.1 Enterprise to 10 Home, so I'm probably doomed to run the full nuke.

I will update hopefully with a solution.
