yes sure i could get a more compact, or lightweight camera, maybe something a little more easier to focus than a split rangefinder/viewer, but at least it's a coupled rangefinder, and i can shoot instax with it

best camera isn't gonna be one you use for technical reasons, but people are sure as hell gonna explain it that way

thats very true, and i've said before that it really doesn't matter what equipment you use

...but...

for example i just took this with my ipad. it's ok:

my big boy cameras and lenses are all literally a thousand miles away at the moment, but i can also tell that given a longer lens and a better sensor i could take a good portrait in these conditions, from the same position (and yeah i'm just sitting in bed lol). i'd also definitely not go as heavy on the noise reduction or bump the iso up that far, but i don't really have control over those here (at least not with the stock app)

i mean, it's fine for what it is. my point is that it could be better just by using different equipment

and yeah being limited by technical constraints can actually lend itself to creativity in squeezing out better results, but i'd rather not have to worry about that and just focus on the picture itself

not everyone enjoys shooting 28mm lenses that's ok. sure enough, you can work around "being far away from a poorly lit subject" by buying a longer, faster lens, but you can also work around the same issues by being closer and having better light

i see. people who casually use a phone without worrying about the technical limitations are bad, unlike people who fuss over which camera and lens to use, who are good, because they are focusing on the picture itself, rather than being limited by technical constraints

and i usually shoot pretty wide anyway, there's a billion examples in this thread. it's not the focal length i really have a problem with, or the lenses (they are on average pretty good), it's the sensors + post-processing. you can get fine results using RAW from most contemporary phones but most people won't bother; that's admittedly not universal though. it's basically the inverse with my pentax Q7 — most phone sensors have probably surpassed it by now but the interchangeable lenses + raw output still let it punch above its minuscule weight

pretty sure beeftweeter means that the existing knowledge of and access to a preferred set of specialist tools allow you make the image you want instead of having to find the best image you can with a generalist tool.

but i also think you know that and are doing obtuse posting

i got an iphone 13 pro max because “hey it has great cameras” and i mean sure compared to an iphone 6s i guess, or no phone at all, and it is hands down the device i use the most, but using it doesn’t give me anything i actually want out of the practice of photography, and in fact the phone’s bullshit is directly responsible for my renewed energy for slr-touching over the last year. if nothing else, it is incredibly unlikely i will ever buy a dedicated camera that sneaks in always-on algorithmic improvements of my images that end up deciding i took a picture of a tree, and so therefore all the components of the bird i saw in that tree must be reshaped to look like leaves. mimesis, eat your heart out! [edit to add: this device is legitimately amazing, i will happily acknowledge that. just not what i want to use in a tool]

you absolutely do not need to buy as much poo poo as some of us have, though, to move into the world of dedicated cameras. gently caress it, get a ricoh gr and call it good. or a mft or nikon mirrorless plus kit lens and you’ll be off to the races. it’s gonna depend on what you actually want out of the hobby. and if all you want is jpegs off a phone, i would hope nobody here would tell you you’re wrong for it.

yep it's this

camera phone pics can be fine. if they're acceptable to you, that's great, use what you like. i think very few people itt will tell you that a good one doesn't have artistic merit or something, but on a technical level (and this being yospos) they're almost always a disappointment

here's a zodion fly i saw yesterday. this was maybe the second frame out of 15 or so that I tried, and considering the wind, this frame represents a big heap of luck. i did NOT have the attention span to actually wait for a good shot yesterday afternoon, so it's just as well. still pushing hard on the pursuit of close-up work, i am starting to realize i need to build a kit checklist to take out specifically for when i'm in the mood to macro.

and in the spirit of engaging in pos, from my most yciapos camera

hercules is an incredibly photogenic heap of fuzz no matter the capture device.

i’m still trying to work out the best way to deal with the people I work with too, the last way I did it was
separate all the photo onto either useable or not useable and then send low res copies with the
proviso they aren’t to be shared, and for them to tell me which ones they liked. she liked 50 of them lol!

I understand if people were doing this professionally they’d charge like $100-150 for an hour with 8-12 photos or something, so 50 for free is a bargain lol. lucky for them I don’t value myself
when i did the two weddings for friends, the people knew they were getting a discount on a competent photog who does not rely on the work to make a living, and we adjusted expectations appropriately. i told them they would be getting a professional amount of dedication out of their money, which meant the length of the service and reception, and then a couple of days of processing depending on exactly how many frames came back and how usable things were. i had made an arrangement with them where i would be giving them very high quality jpegs of basically the whole shoot, along with a written release for any printing shop that would have expressed concern about printing wedding portraits. that was how i justified charging the hours and it felt like it worked well considering i don't have to pay for health and business insurance.

also thinking about the whole 'you get some certain and small number of frames out of our shoot' thing, it seems like it probably comes from 120/220 film and shops that do their own in-house printing. i don't do either of those things (at least, i don't have something that shoots 6x4.5cm yet), so it didn't even occur to me to do something other than "here are the 30 keeper frames out of our portraiture sessions and all of the x00 shots of you and your friends and family having a great time together" as a deliverable. i imagine i would feel very differently about all that if i actually did the work as my living, or if i were sending out prints.
