I'm pretty new to Final Fantasy, I've played the three Playstation games since 2019, and while I think FFVII is the best of the three, I keep thinking about FFVIII because it's so drat weird. At one point, one Hogwarts for Child Soldiers attacks another Hogwarts for Child Soldiers by launching rocket-powered motorcycles off ramps. The man character's sword has a gun on it which translates to an easy button that lets you do extra damage. The main villain talks like she's from Mortal Kombat. It's bonkers as poo poo, while also making room for great character bits like Squall risking his life to save Rinoa while she's floating through space. Not to mention how busted the combat is if you do a little bit of reading.

TheGreatEvilKing posted:FF8 is good, I'm like one of five people who likes Squall as a kid in way over his head, and the soundtrack slaps. I like Squall too, he feels like a mix of Shinji and Rei from Evangelion. He’s cold and aloof to people around him because he doesn’t want to let anyone into his life in case they abandon him. But also he was raised for the sole purpose of battling a great evil that threatens not only the world, but the very fabric of reality.

Dark_Swordmaster posted:. I also usually despise card games in RPG's so I literally have never played a single hand of 8's card game and don't know the first rule. Hilarious to find out apparently that's a major avenue of progression in this one. Triple Triad (at least until they start introducing rules like Same and Element) is really straightforward, to the point you can learn it in one game without a tutorial. It’s simple, quick, fun, and if you do it enough at the beginning of the game, you can power level enough to not be threatened for hours. Sensenmann posted:It goes off the rails fast and never bothers to slow things down. Quite the opposite. Everything gets dialed to 11. Are you sure it doesn’t go off the rails like some kind of… Doomtrain? 👻

NikkolasKing posted:She figured out Laguna was Squall's dad a lot faster than I did. I remember when I first beat the game in the early 2000s I felt so proud for eventually piecing it together when Kiros and Ward basically spell it out to you at the end of Disk 3. Here she is at the start of Disk 3 and she's on the ball. I somehow missed this is while playing and only got it by listening to Retronauts’ FF8 episode. I think I have trouble retaining information from text-heavy JRPGs. Asterite34 posted:Another useful tip: render Squall Blind This loving rules. zakharov posted:There's some frame rate issue in the remaster that makes the gunblade trigger much harder to use than the original. It took me a little bit to learn the timing, but it’s loving hilarious FF8 has an easy button that lets Squall do 50% extra damage.

You don’t need to draw repeatedly to get moves, AFAIK the list that first comes up for the Draw is all they’ll have, barring changing their level with abilities. Also it’s surprising you find it slow. Granted I came into 8 off the Switch port of FF9, but it felt really slick and responsive to me. Granted, I never used GFs in battle, but I’ve heard that the animations get very old very quickly. aperfectcirclefan posted:2. The systems seem convoluted but fun once you get the hang of it. I can't tell if its good to have multiple summons in my GF or if I should just stick to one? Can you clarify what you mean by this? I think you’re asking if it’s okay to junction multiple GFs to one character, which is good and recommended to give your characters the most abilities and buffs.

aperfectcirclefan posted:I just got up to Timber and that train mission. This game is cool but I think I don't like the junction system and wish I could just play this like a normal FF. I think the junctioning would have been a lot more confusing if I hadn’t read a guide laying out who gets what GF and what order to learn their abilities every time I got a new GF.

NikkolasKing posted:Squall, called "Leon", is a semi-prominent character in KH, at least KH1 and 2, dunno about any of the others. He's voiced by David Boreanaz in KH1 IIRC. You forgot Selphie has blink-and-you-miss-it roles in both KH1 and 2. She’s Someone you can practice fighting with on Destiny Islands in 1 and I’m pretty sure she’s only in the first cutscene with Kairi in 2 (I didn’t 100% it so she could be in some other cutscene but I don’t think so.)

Kingdom Hearts hits the existentialism strong in the opening, with Riku asking if there are so many worlds out there, why were they born on this one, specifically? But then the rest of 1 and 2 are stopping little shadow dudes from messing up Disney movies and figuring out who the gently caress Ansem is.

Dark_Swordmaster posted:I did not even play the tutorial for TT in my playthrough. To this day I don't know anything about it or how it works. I loving hate tacked on RPG minigames so I'm glad it was 100% optional and you didn't even need the tutorial match. Is there even a Triple Triad tutorial? It starts really simple and gets more confusing as the game goes, but if you just play with Balamb rules, it’s very simple to grasp.
