I'm interested to see what Houston Dynamo does this offseason. New owner, new GM, soon to come new coach. I think there will be a decent amount of player turnover as well, they have already declined to re-sign Urruti, Quintero, Boniek, among others. Houston has really become one of the least exciting or interesting teams in the league over the last 5-6 years, I'm hoping this year will be a bit of a reset and begin a proper rebuild. They have 2-3 DP slots available, so there is no lack of options. I watched a good amount of MLS in general this past season, but it would be nice to actually want to watch my team again.

Should be a really interesting winter for transfers in general in MLS, both incoming and outgoing. I hope the young south american trend continues.

I figure both Tajouri-Shradi and Blackmon would've been solid early pieces to build around. It's interesting though, I've been looking back through recent expansion drafts and it's really very rare that expansion draft players see significant playing time, maybe one player per year it seems like. I guess there's a reason why they were left unprotected but it was still surprising to look through the lists and see how few expansion draft players made any impact. Like Austin drafted five players last year, and only one (Jared Stroud) saw much time this year. Kind of makes me wonder why they do it at all

its an artifact of early era MLS imo. But i suppose it won't happen that many more times. Charlotte basically used 1 of those picks to cover their GAM they sent to Nashville for the 2 intl slots, and pocketed some GAM for 2023. Roster building for a brand new team in MLS (or any team really) is such a bizarre process.

cbs/paramount production and app stuff with champions league and concacaf stuff has generally been pretty bad. its roughly a weekly occurance that they fail to start a stream and the quality is subpar.

id really prefer mls stays at espn primarily but whatcha gonna do

The commentary team they have for serie a ranges from very good to tolerable. I imagine whoever is on fox and espn these days for mls would just jump ship though so that’s irrelevant really. The whole studio poo poo is of high production quality at least.

Thats fair, I guess I can't blame them for the weird concacaf poo poo they have. And I guess one encouraging sign, apparently a big chunk of the CL knockout games are going to be on the CBS mothership - they announced 6 matches on CBS in the round of 16. Which may suggest MLS would get network coverage there too and not just all behind paramount.

But yeah, in general ESPN+ is the most reliable streaming service in my opinion. I'd like to see 4k content sooner than later but other than that, it just tends to work across devices, is decently organized and has a ton of leagues and sports.

I'm...skeptical that it is in MLS' best interest to go with a less sports specific provider. I know everyone likes a big bag of money but its hard enough for casual viewers to find MLS matches as it is, at least with ESPN and Fox (and to a lesser extent CBS if its that) its in the place where sports viewers go to watch sports, and alongside other soccer programming that can lead in, cross-promote, etc. Apple seems like a transparently bad idea.

The remaining weirdness is only in terms of the cap (since the league stopped taking a cut of homegrowns' transfer fees like five years ago), but honestly this has just been a particularly good year for them - most of the last few years they've been average in revenue since the McKennie-tier kids were leaving for free rather than signing MLS deals. Cannon last year left for a couple of mill (did Boavista ever actually pay them? ) but this year they really got paid, between Reynolds, Tessman, and Pepi - that's like 30m between them where a) the average MLS team makes like $2m in transfer sales in a year, and b) the best available estimates suggest that FCD as a club doesn't earn much more than that in a given year on its own (as in, ignoring earnings from their share of SUM).

yeah that all checks out. for comparison the new media deal the league is hyped about is expected to provide like 6-10mil a year per team lol

seems like a smart hire, unfortunately.

Apparently some Bundesliga clubs want to buy Miles Robinson but Atlanta doesn't want to sell. I'd think they hold out for a big fee unless hes pushing for an exit, he would be difficult to replace.

I think Sands should do fine in Scotland - some mls/usmnt fans are a bit cranky he isn't moving to a bigger league, which eh whatever. He's a solid versatile player, I think his future is likely more at CB than in the midfield but could see either.

The US manager Berhalter is higher on him than a lot of fans and has not been shy about throwing him into important spots even at his age and relative inexperience - he'll likely be in the mix for the national team and could even make a potential world cup roster.

I'd guess he would look to move to one of the bigger European leagues in a couple years if things go well, but this seems like a pretty appropriate level for him right now. He's a young defender and that always comes with some mistakes, but he's not raw by any means. Given its a loan and there isn't a fee upfront, seems like a nice get for Rangers.

on the CB vs CM thing, it depends on the system some - he's very good at long passes out of the back to open up a defense (i think among the best in MLS at this), so if you want a more modern CB who can do that, he is good for that. I think he works best as a CB in a back 3 where he can get forward more.

edit: Speaking of, this is apparently a done deal

the gap between MLS valuations and bigger teams in europe is pretty straight forward: lack of relegation, controlled salaries, and lack of existing debt. MLS teams at this stage are a much much safer investment financially and have a ton of potential upside longterm.

Houston struck an enormous deal with FuboTV, apparently. Garber keeps referencing sports betting's potential revenue for MLS and I guess he was not exaggerating

https://twitter.com/novy_williams/status/1484167127645003786

quote:

Houston Dynamo FC has signed a multi-year deal with Fubo Gaming, a partnership that could be worth $178 million, making it one of the largest commercial deals in MLS club history.

The partnership has two main parts: a sponsorship deal and a market access agreement, which could pave the way for Fubo to acquire a gaming license in Texas. The latter is the more valuable piece, as many consider Texas to be among the country’s most lucrative betting markets.

The deal includes a $10 million signing bonus, and Fubo is committing to spend $1 million per year for marketing rights before Texas legalizes sports betting, according to someone familiar with the terms, who was granted anonymity because the negotiations were private. Should the state legalize betting in a way that gives sports teams the right to distribute licenses, Fubo will pay the club an additional $15 million bonus, then commit to another $15 million annually over a 10-year period.

Under the Dynamo deal, which starts this season and includes the NWSL’s Houston Dash, Fubo will have advertising on-site during games. The company will also have a presence on the club’s broadcast, digital and social platforms, and branding on the front of the Dynamo and Dash training tops. Most of this will start as FuboTV marketing, but transition to include Fubo Gaming if the company’s sportsbook goes live in Texas.

The Texas legislature considered a bill last year that would grant its professional sports teams licenses that they can pass along to partners (a similar law passed in Arizona and another in Ohio). Bills structured this way are a big benefit to local sports teams, who become a limited commodity for companies looking to secure a license. Butera said he was “very confident” that Texas’ eventual legislation would keep that language.

In the scheme of MLS revenue, thats kind of insane. Bigger than the slice Houston would get from any new potential TV deal.

7-10 million apparently per some other reporting. Leno would move on. From an Arsenal pov it makes sense but from a USMNT pov, Turner is glued to the bench the rest of the season and is presumably ramsdale's backup long term, only getting cup matches and such. I assume Turner would get a serious raise though and he wants to go to Europe.
