I saw titanic with a buddy on opening night because it was James Cameron and the commercials made it seem like the crash would happen 5 minutes into the movie and it would be awesome. We were freshmen or sophomores in high school and pretty sure we were the only guys there...

Also furious 7 rules.

The sinking is a good hour and a half of movie when it gets going, easily the most sustained action/suspense sequence in Cameron's filmography

The worst part of Titanic is the framing narrative, how long it runs before flashing back to the past and proper beginning of the story and how it ends the film by applauding itself into the credits

You can’t just invoke that scene without linking to it. Titanic: The Legend Goes On is one of the most hilariously cynical movies ever made and should always be mentioned as part of Real Titanic’s cultural wake.

There is absolutely less female nudity right now than prior and there's a bad reason and a good reason; despite the "eating rear end" jokes the majority of people today are absolute reactionary prudes (the bad reason), and also a lot of that female nudity was chauvinistic poo poo that should be gone (the good reason).

Titanic was interesting because the guy is an artist and she clearly did it both to feel liberated and also seduce him. The camera lingers long enough to give you a taste of his quite literal titillation but isn't exploitative, I don't think.

There's also that two seconds of onscreen nudity has completely lost its draw nowadays with the availability of internet porn.

The only things I remember about Titanic was My Heart Will Go On, a "remix" of that with random South Park quotes added to it (there were a lot of those back in the day), and reading a Foxtrot plotline about the Mom getting obsessed about the movie.
Never saw it myself, seeing as I only like 10 years old when it came out.

Oh man, I remember that Foxtrot storyline too! I probably haven't thought about that comic in years. I remember they also had a Sunday comic about the DeLorean from Back to the Future causing Deep Space 9 to crash to Earth and being found by Mulder and Scully, which seems like a fairly prescient and prominent take on modern nerd culture for something in newspaper comics in the 1990s.

In a moment of reflection a long time ago I realized that Kate Winslet probably had the most seen boobs of any human being ever born. I wonder if that's still true.

Also that whole phenomenon of 13 year old girls going to watch Titanic over and over like they were on the Hajj was such a crazy time. Remember when huge movies would run for months and months? Remember when we had some semblance of a common culture, degraded and compromised and threadbare as it was?

I like the way the beginning shows you the actual ruins of the Titanic and everything that was lost nearly a hundred years prior, building the anticipation to see it all restored again. When she goes, "They called it the ship of dreams..." and it cross-fades into the flashback, that's the best part of the whole movie. If you start it in the past with everyone getting on the boat it's just a story about a boat that crashed, but what the movie's actually about is the intermingling of history and loss and the complicated emotions that accompany it. The ending part of the frame story is mostly forgettable, but it is nice that Kate gets to explain that she turned out okay and that Bill Paxton learns something from the experience.

Foxtrot sometimes pops up in the BSS daily comics thread, and my eyes always slide right past it because it's so drat ugly and unappealing to look at. Didn't realise it had a nerd aspect, thought it was just another slice-of-life family strip.

The artist is a big nerd, and the son in the comic was a stand-in for him, but there are also lots of non-nerd stuff in it. But it had some fairly esoteric nerd stuff (for the time), like talking about the 90s Star Wars EU or having a joke about All Your Base Are Belong to Us.
