They merged my AFSC with another similat one a decade ago but gave them different shreds, so it didn't really change much except to make searching for job slots a pain on Talent Marketplace now.

Yeah it's incredibly dumb. I'm comm and over the years I've been through multiple AFSC and shred mergers. Accelerate change or lose, which I guess means spend a decade dithering about how to streamline training to suit a modern network environment, and then eventually settle on "Just don't teach anything useful and hope the Airmen will work with someone who knows what they're doing and how to train the new guys." Talent Marketplace suuuuucked because the listings for my AFSC all had a bunch of extra qualifiers like "Must have prior <AFSC that was merged five years ago>, <AFSC that was merged 14 years ago>, or <shred that was discontinued two years ago> experience and possess SEI <associated with former AFSC>" So if we're going to manage assignments based on our old AFSCs, why the hell did we waste our money and time conducting three different major mergers over the last 15 years? And how are we going to handle those assignments going forward, when we no longer have anyone with the old tech school or OJT, when we don't actually train the new guys? I mean, I know the answer. I just don't like it. I'll be retired before the damage from the latest merger (and walkback) really hits.

Back when they combined all of enlisted Comm fields into one AFSC with a couple of shreds they go and release a new AFJQS and almost none of it applies to radio. If they hadn’t gone back to the old system it would have been a mess trying to spin up a new school to send people to right after they complete a generic Comm tech school that barely applies to their actual job.

Had a dream last night that I was back in basic training. Dream me thought it was bullshit that I had to do basic and tech school again, and that life had gotten real poo poo that this was somehow my best option. I woke up trying to convince myself it wouldn't go down like that
