Happy New Year all! This thread is to post your financial and personal goals for 2022 to track through the year. Personally I've found having goals and updating this thread through the last few years has made me much more accountable at saving and investing correctly before spending/gambling my discretionary income. Tips for a successful financial year

I’m 37, recently separated. I believe the biggest reason for this is my wife (until otherwise) thinks I am too impulsive with money. While I absolutely could be better, I still believe I have established a nice foundation and there is no reason I can’t achieve big things. About 8 years ago, I moved from CO to HI to make more money - it would have taken me into my 40s to pay off my debts had I stayed in Denver. About 3.5 years ago, I moved to the Bay Area to, again, make more money - I was out of debt now but would love to retire early. I don’t really care about luxury and I just want to become FIRE asap. I have ~20k liquid, ~330k in retirement with 2 modest pensions, and zero debt. I have purchased everything small that I could ever want (golf clubs of my dreams, every video game and electronic imaginable, all the nice kitchen things, more nice clothes than I’ll ever be able to wear) and have a fairly nice car that is paid off - but it all feels cheap when people view you as being bad with money. I don’t have any property, and this is my biggest source of shame. I have been waiting for a better market that just never seems to come. Plus I keep living in the most expensive parts of the country, which doesn’t help any. I graduated college in 2008, just as the world was melting down, and I consider myself fortunate to have been given the opportunities that I’ve had. But I look back and think to myself just how easily I could have been a multimillionaire at this point (drat I wish that I was in a financial position to have bought a house 2008-2010, shoulda bought apple or Bitcoin or Netflix or ect ect)…. But as a RN I see death frequently and have to remind myself that every day is a miracle and that NOTHING is guaranteed. But yeah, I am ready to really kick things into overdrive financially. I don’t want people to look at me any more and think to themselves that I don’t have my poo poo together. My goal over 2022 is to not buy ANY more non-essential clothing, 2k video game budget (gotta have my elden ring and Zelda), and I want to invest 50%. By the end of 2023, I want to have financed SOMETHING. I am going to sell off everything that doesn’t bring me joy (thanks Marie Kondo) and will look to keep developing my eBay side hustle. I am totally open to advice, constructive criticism, whatever. I am not a finished product and am always looking to improve. I am also not scared to lose a percentage of my investing money in high risk ventures. Scared money don’t make none - so if you see something that has awesome growth potential let me know. Let’s get rich together, goons. garrettdonohue fucked around with this message at 18:41 on Jan 3, 2022 |

This is a useful thread! I am excited to organize my thoughts. My goals center around figuring out what goals I want to set. Over the the last three years, I've finally been in a spot where I could live by myself, contribute to retirement savings, AND slowly build up excess funds. However, each of the last two years has had an unexpected emergency that wiped out most of the accrued funds each year. So at this point, I'm gunshy about doing anything with the excess funds because I like the security of having that much liquidity. My gross excess funds the last two years were about $12k annually. My income has gone up a bit, but now rents are skyrocketing because COVID protections have ceased. Financial Goals for 2022

Financial goals: - Max out Roth IRA (done) - Max out wife Roth IRA (done) - Max out 457 (on autopilot) - Possible: Get a new job in tech Usually, I'd want to also max my 403b, but I'm taking the spring semester off as parental leave, which will be unpaid, so I don't think I will have enough income to max it out. The biggest thing is getting a data science job in tech. I've been in academia for 9 years now (14 if you include grad school), and things have been feeling very same-y. I want to do something new and data science seems interesting. With remote work now becoming more normalized, this would seems like a great time to transition. I've been thinking about this for a while, but with tenure coming up, it's kind of a poo poo or get off the pot moment. We'll see if I gather the courage to pull the trigger.

I've been in debt pretty much consistently for the last 12 years. A few months ago I got out of the last batch and I decided to actually do something about it. Financial Goals - 1/4 of paycheck into ISA every month - Pay for wedding later this year and buy car as a couple without eating into savings or running up more debt (this should be done, but there's always unexpected costs) - Earn extra 1/4 of main paycheck with side revenue stream and put unspent into savings - Ask for a payrise at main employment (got a 2.2% raise as standard and inflation is currently 6%) Personal Goals - Get married! - Learn to drive a car (about time, I only use a motorcycle) - Switch motorcycle to electric - Join fire service (physical exam is tomorrow) - Visit friend for skiing in New Zealand - Have more fun (not SMART but probably most critical goal) Good luck everyone!

Goal 1 should be something I can set and forget each month, unless something unexpected comes up. Goal 3 just needs me to be reasonably on the ball with deadlines (and given how little I made on my side project this tax year, will probably just be "submitted" with nothing to pay). Goal 2 is the real challenge and it ties in to a few aspects of my life (future career plans, general motivation/proactivity, etc.).

I’m in an unusual situation this year. I am currently on a leave of absence from my usual job and working as an interim administrator. So - while I will be making a decent amount more money overall, I also will not get paychecks in July and August as my admin contract runs through the end of June and my usual contract starts back up in September. So, just gotta make sure I put away money for summer expenses and not overspend when I see these large paychecks coming in. It’ll be sad to break my streak of positive net worth months in YNAB. Goals: 1. Raise net worth from $260k to $310k. I don’t even know what are reasonable goals here, so +$50k it is! 2. Increase emergency fund from $16k to $18k. I think I’ll feel good when it hits $20k? I don’t know. 3. Get fence + retaining wall replaced. Pay cash, hopefully. I'll start getting estimates in February/March and go from there! 4. Put away $7k for August/September expenses. I added a budget line item for this so I can move money out of it during the two months I won’t be getting paychecks. 5. Make one extra mortgage payment. 6. Contribute minimum $4k to Roth IRA. 7. No new consumer debt!

Did a little bit of question asking in the FIRE thread. I may do some poking around in the Boglehead forums as well. Personal Goals -If and when COVID allows, schedule long deferred medical appointments (general checkup, dental, vision, psychiatric). Still waiting, but if the recent pullback in COVID case numbers is sustained, I'll try to schedule these this month. -Make at least two trips to visit distant family and friends. I have two trips in the planning stages, one for March and one for June. Fingers crossed that COVID situation doesn't deteriorate even further. -Get a nice food processor and a stand-up mixer. I'll start saving for these after maxing 2021 Roth IRA -As COVID allows, eat a nice meal in LA quarterly. No ideas on this one yet, COVID makes this quarter feel a little dicey. -As COVID allows, play at least 1 OTB chess tournament. No action on this one yet. -Take an online course dedicated to the London for white and the Caro-Kann for black. Figure out my responses to 1.d4 as black. BFC: Max out backdoor Roth (done) Max out standard annual I Bond contribution (done) Max out pre-tax 401k contributions (autopilot, should max in April) - Actually changed to after-tax for now since I might switch companies and get a better pre-tax match. Max out megabackdoor Roth contributions - See above Continue shifting my non-real-estate asset allocation downward from its current leveraged position of over 100% equities - Calculated that I'm about 150% equities today, tentatively targeting roughly 115% by EOY. Get another job offer at a comparable compensation range as a fallback plan and potential way to generate a counteroffer comp increase - At late-stage interviews with 3 companies right now. Evaluate three points on the effort spectrum: doing as little as possible to not get fired, doing as little as possible to expect a pretty good annual review, and overemployment. (I think I've been close to that middle item for a while I think, will validate once the review comes in) - Overemployment seems like a huge hassle. Review details still pending. If I do switch jobs, I probably have to try a fair amount at the start, so this is up in the air right now. Lifespan & Healthspan: Systematize a sauna / steam room / whirlpool routine - Sauna has been pretty regular, other two lagging. Return to sport, targeting twice a month during non-winter - It's still winter More video games. - Interview prep has meant less video games, unfortunately. Habituate mid-day mindfulness practice - Have done some late-day, not doing well here. Proactively nurture positive expected utility friendships, more and deeper - Deeper yes, not quite more yet and don't have a clear path there. Explore lucid dreaming as a way to meaningfully increase the amount of time I spend conscious - Have been remembering dreams quite frequently. Need to do a bit more here though.

Financial goals for FY2022 (July-June): - have a savings rate of over 50% - currently at 59% as at end of January - increase superannuation contributions to max out concessional cap - wait until company accountant changes at end of February then request it - set up a high interest savings fund for ~6 months of expenses - propose to cancel this one, mortgage offset account is fine for now and interest rates are woeful - update donations to 4% of current salary - new amounts calculated, 1 of 4 charities updated to reflect new amounts Personal goals for 2022 (Jan-Dec): - read 15 books - 1/15 completed this year so far, got a few books half-read so I think I'm on track - write & post one article every week - one written so far so I'm behind by ~4-5 articles, may have to change to 30-40 for the year, just not finding the time to write - listen to at least one new album every week - 6 weeks ahead of schedule - 6 home improvement tasks - 0/6 so far, looking at regrouting the shower shortly
