What is AFL? This 5 minute video aimed at Americans should hopefully explain the basics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMZYZcoAcU0 <<<< watch this Footy, as it is known to the masses, is a fast-paced, full contact, 360 degree game which takes place on a truly massive (and non-standard sized) field of turf with 18 players on both teams chasing a leather ball around the place which can lead to some big hits and some impressive displays of skills. It is also one of the highest attended domestic sports league in the world with over 1 million paid up members (think seat/season pass holders) in Australia (Population 25 million) with many more spectators. https://i.imgur.com/OOSZEAH.gifv A brief history Australian football was devised around the Victorian gold rush years as something for cricketers to "keep fit" over summer, with the rules inspired by Marngrook, a game played by the indigenous peoples of Western Victoria. The first "organised" game of this new code was played out in 1858. As it existed then was basically dozens of players chasing the ball around a huge paddock, before the rules got refined to more suited to being played on cricket ovals. This lead to the Victorian Football Association (VFA) being formed soon after - matches were initially arranged on an ad-hoc basis, but soon took on a league structure. Around this time the game spread to the other states, having had the most impact in South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. The Victorian Football League (VFL) was established by eight Melbourne teams in 1897 as a breakaway of the VFA, which remained as the second-tier league in Victoria. The VFL remained a Victorian-based competition for most of its history, with SA and WA also hosting strong state leagues, as well as numerous suburban country leagues, however with the money and crowds concentrated in Melbourne, this caused a drift of the better players to the VFL through the 1960s and 70s. There was some state vs state competition, more on that below. Eventually the VFL began to expand interstate with the relocation of South Melbourne to Sydney in 1982, with subsequent expansions in 1987 to West Coast in Perth and the Brisbane Bears in Gold Coast (they moved into Brisbane a few years latter). While the main aim was to establish the national competition with an eye to TV rights, half the Victorian teams were flat broke so the license fees raised from the expenses were used to bail them out. With The Adelaide Crows in 1990, the VFL changed its name to the Australian Football League to reflect the national competition. The next new entrants were Fremantle in 1995, Port Adelaide in 1997, while Fitzroy "merged" with the Bears to become the Brisbane Lions. The current VFL is essentially the old VFA with both local standalone teams and reserves teams of the Victorian AFL clubs. Likewise the SANFL and WAFL have much the same status, along with the NEAFL which covers NSW, Queensland, the ACT (Canberra) and the Northern Territory. In the early 2010s, the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants were added to the comp, so every mainland state now has at least two clubs, while Tasmania, which is football mad but also kind of poor, gets to watch a few games a year hosted by Hawthorn (in Launceston) and North Melbourne (in Hobart). The aim of the game is to win possession on the ball and kick it through the middle two set of big white sticks, which will earn you 6 points. If you kick it between the tall and the little post or the ball hits the goal post or is touched by any player going across the goal line it is worth 1 point. At the start of every quarter (20 minutes + time on, usually 30m all up) and after a goal has been scored the ball is brought to the middle for a ball up/centre bounce where two ruckmen will try to tap the ball to the advantage of their teammates, think of a basketball jump ball. The two main legal ways of passing the ball are via kicking and handballing, in any direction - there are no offside rules. If a player takes a mark (catch) at least 15m away from a kick which has not been touched by another player or has hit the ground an umpire awards a free kick, allowing the player to either play on or collect themselves for a few seconds to take an uninterrupted kick. Hand balling is punching the ball with a closed fist out of the palm of your other hand, players are not allowed to throw the ball and will have a free kick awarded against them if they do. It is legal to tackle an opponent with the ball between the shoulders and the knees. If successful and the opposing player was run down or had prior opportunity to dispose of the ball but didn't, a free kick is rewarded. Usually the crowd will advise the umpires that someone was holding the "BALLLLL". Otherwise if the ball gets tied up, the umpire will throw the ball up for t Oh yeah, you have to bounce (or ground) the ball every 15 meters if you're running, being an oval ball it does not bounce quite like a basketball. Yes, you can stand on peoples backs if you're legitimately going for the ball. https://i.imgur.com/EkmYHeX.mp4 The structure of the competition which runs from March to September/October is thus: 18 teams, 23 rounds of football (including a byes for each team), the top 8 teams get to play in the finals. The top 4 teams on the ladder get a double chance to stay in if they lose in the first week, and everyone else does elimination finals from the get go. The final 2 teams play in the Grand Final for the Premiership held in the last weekend of September or the first weekend of October depending which week the season starts.  https://i.imgur.com/HQrI0gU.mp4 AFLW The first season of the national women's competition kicked off in 2017 with 8 teams which are all aligned with the existing men's teams (see below). In 2019 it expanded to 10 teams. Currently 14 teams compete, with the final four teams scheduled to be added in 2023. It is a semi-professional competition running during the summer months with players only having 5 months long contracts and training in the evening after schooling or fulltime work, they aren't paid much either with the maximum player payment set between $13,400 and $24,600, compared to the men who are paid between $100,000-$1,300,000 per season. The 2022 AFLW season kicks off 7th January with St Kilda vs Richmond. The idiotic idea of conferences has been banished. The finals now go for 3 weeks with elimination and preliminary final stages before the grand final. See the third post of the thread for AFLW season 2022 information. https://i.imgur.com/RgY4KCz.mp4 Any given Sunday The AFL actively pursues a policy of equalisation so that every club can be reasonably expected to compete for a premiership within a reasonable period. This is closer to the NFL system and the “any given Sunday” principle, than for example the English Premier League where only a handful of clubs are reasonably expected to fill the top end of the rankings. The below table attempts to summarise the financial position of the clubs (going from 2019 as a pre-COVID baseline).  There are several levers to this equalisation policy. The majority of players are introduced to the league through a national draft. Clubs take picks in reverse ladder order from the previous year. Clubs are able to trade picks for other picks or players, and are able to trade future year picks as well. The AFL is subject to a salary cap for player payments. This is something of a rolling cap, as clubs are able to over or underspend in a given year, if this is accounted for in subsequent years. Player contracts are frequently back-ended or front-ended, rather than paid evenly across their length to assist with salary cap management. Clubs are also subject to a “soft cap” on football department spending. This covers the amount spent on coaching staff, medical, wellbeing, and support staff. Any amount a club spends above a cap set by the AFL is subject to an additional “tax”, paid into an equalisation fund run by the AFL and distributed between clubs. This cap intends to level the playing field between the differences in financial power between clubs. Overall the equalisation policy has been successful. In the 26 years from 1995-2021, 14 different teams have won premierships, and all but one team (Gold Coast) has qualified for a grand final. Recently Sydney, Geelong, the Bulldogs, Richmond, and Melbourne all broke premiership droughts of between 30 and 70 years.

The Teams: ADELAIDE CROWS First AFL season: 1991 Premierships: 2 - 1997, 1998 Their most recent peak was 2017 when they made the grand final, although it's arguable if they turned up. Since then they've middling to bad, and have gone through a review of their operations. Their former captain racially abused someone in a reserves match, but he's back now (or is he?).  BRISBANE LIONS First AFL season: 1997 (merger of Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears) Premierships: 3 - 2001, 2002, 2003 (8 as Fitzroy - 1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916, 1922, 1944) The Brions have struggled a bit since their three-peat era, but looked more promising of late, with their rebuilding efforts bearing fruit. They have failed to turn regular season success into finals wins though, with the current coach having a 1-5 record. Still legit one of the more exciting teams to watch at the moment.  CARLTON BLUES First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 16 - 1906, 1907, 1908, 1914, 1915, 1938, 1945, 1947, 1968, 1970, 1972, 1979, 1981, 1982, 1987, 1995 Those of us whose hair is greying and falling out can remember when Carlton were the cashed-up bogeyman side of the VFL, but for the last couple of decades they've been putrid. Yet again there are expectations on Carlton this season, but I think most people are waiting to see how they’ll fail to deliver once again.  COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 15 - 1902, 1903, 1910, 1917, 1919, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935, 1936, 1953, 1958, 1990, 2010 Formerly the "biggest" club in Australia (and this is an incredible sore spot for them). After bottling the 2018 GF, they were at the losing end of one of the worst great preliminary finals in recent history as they fell just short of overhauling the lead they gave the Giants in the third quarter. They’ve since fallen in a bit of a heap, and last year saw them sack their longstanding President, as well as their club legend coach. They took a very un-Collingwood approach to a new coach in choosing not to appoint either an established superstar or a lifelong Collingwood person. Hopefully this doesn’t mean a new era of competent governance.  ESSENDON BOMBERS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 16 - 1897, 1901, 1911, 1912, 1923, 1924, 1942, 1946, 1949, 1950, 1962, 1965, 1984, 1985, 1993, 2000 It is now over 6000 days since Essendon has won a finals match. High expectations from a good back of the season led to a big faceplant in Tasmania against eventual runners up the Bulldogs. On the plus side, they seem to have benefited from a number of high profile players leaving prior to the 2020 season, doing well in the draft and looking reinvigorated on-field.  FREMANTLE DOCKERS First AFL season: 1995 Premierships: none I don’t think anyone other than particularly psychotic West Coast supporters wishes any ill towards the Dockers. They’re completely inoffensive to most people. They’ve got a decent young crop coming through the midfield. Their perennial problem has been attracting a dominant key forward. Wouldn’t expect huge things from them in 2022 but they seem to be trending upwards.  GEELONG CATS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 9 - 1925, 1931, 1937, 1951, 1952, 1963, 2007, 2009, 2011 Geelong are like the ultra-Brisbane, turning good regular seasons into disappointing finals exits for a decade now. This year they got pantsed by eventual premiers Melbourne to the tune of 83 points, although later reports were that a virus had ripped through much of their playing list in the days prior. It seems every single year is the last possible year for an ageing Cats list to seriously contend, and this year is no different. If we all keep predicting a collapse eventually we’ve got to be right?  GOLD COAST SUNS First AFL season: 2011 Premierships: none Another point of evidence supporting the hypothesis that the entire Gold Coast region is cursed and the sooner it finally washes into the sea the better. Another poo poo season will only lead to more questions as to why this team exists when even a Tasmanian club split between Hobart and Launie sounds like a more viable option.  GREATER WESTERN SYDNEY (GWS) GIANTS First AFL season: 2012 Premierships: none Like Aldi, slowly gaining respect in this country as a legitimate option but still mainly known for the aisle of weird specials like Toby Greene. Won a final against Sydney (although arguably Sydney lost it). gently caress Toby Greene.  HAWTHORN HAWKS First AFL season: 1925 Premierships: 13 - 1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015 Another Victorian jerk club (see Carlton/Essendon), however having had a brush with a fate worse than death (merging with Melbourne) in the 90s, actually reworked their Machiavellian ethos for the modern era where if you're going to cheat, do it legally. Went down the ladder in 2021, although still gave quality teams some hard match-ups. They got rid of Alastair Clarkson, arguably the best coach of the modern era, partly as a result of keeping President Jeff Kennett, inarguably the worst Premier of modern Victoria. I think a lot of people are watching some of what new coach Sam Mitchell is putting together with an aspect of “not again” and hoping we’re not subjected to another dynasty in the near future.  MELBOURNE DEMONS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 10 - 1900, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1964, 2021 The Dees had a breakthrough finals performance in 2018 before being utterly embarrassed by the Eagles in Perth. They inexplicably fell to 2nd bottom the following year, but in the process picked up two first round draft picks that would eventually play in their 2021 premiership. They built their flag last year on a rock-solid defence, damaging midfield, and something that at times resembled a forward line. They’ve got an exciting young list, and the only reason to think they won’t be contending for the next five years is that they’re still Melbourne.  NORTH MELBOURNE KANGAROOS First VFL season: 1925 Premierships: 4 - 1975, 1977, 1996, 1999 Tyrannosaurus, christ it's so goddamn tall. Tyrannosaurus, tiny hands to hold the ball When Rex is on the warpath, all the other reptiles flee Tyrannosaurus is the monster that will eat both you and me  PORT ADELAIDE POWER First AFL season: 1997 Premierships: 1 – 2004 Port Adelaide like to pretend that their flags in a second-rate state-league competition that now functions only as a development territory mean something. They made the finals again before being utterly embarrassed by eventual runners up the Bulldogs in the preliminary final.  RICHMOND TIGERS First VFL season: 1908 Premierships: 12 - 1920, 1921, 1932, 1934, 1943, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974, 1980, 2017, 2019,2020 Another old-skool team that were functionally useless for decades, but suddenly they've won 2 flags in the last 3 seasons, their numerous deranged fans have something positive to be obnoxious about, and it's scary. They had a bit of a run with injury in 2021 that never saw them move out of second gear. Bit of an unknown for 2022 but I think most people are at least worried.  ST KILDA SAINTS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club Premierships: 1 – 1966 The Saints now own the longest premiership drought in the league. From the outside it feels like they’ve overrated their list a few times recently, bringing in players to top up for contention prematurely. They have moved back into Moorabbin as their training base, which should be fine as long as they don't set up the old nightclub as well.  SYDNEY SWANS First VFL season: 1897 - foundation club (as South Melbourne) Premierships: 5 - 1909, 1918, 1933, 2005, 2012 The Swans returned to their natural position in the 21st century of being “pretty good”. They’ve got an exciting team of young players, and unusually for Sydney an easy to watch attacking playstyle. Buddy Franklin should get to 1000 career goals in the early part of the season which will be great.  WEST COAST EAGLES First VFL season: 1987 Premierships: 4 - 1992, 1994, 2006, 2018 West Coast kind of feel like they’re ready to fall in a heap. It’s very rare for them to be really bad, because they’ll usually bank 8/9+ of their games at home to put them at least in the finals equations.  WESTERN BULLDOGS First VFL season: 1925 Premierships: 2 – 1954, 2016 The dogs look set to repeat their against all odds flag run of 2016 again last year. They fell way off the mark for the last month of the regular season, losing their top 4 spot in the process (they had been 1st/2nd for the majority of the season to that point). The finals felt like they went forty minutes too long. Going from a commanding position midway through the third quarter of the grand final to an eventual 12 goal loss. Also, I split from my long term partner a few days before Christmas. Watching highlights of the Dees 2021 finals series really helped me get through the first week of grief. Home alone on Christmas night I watched the entire grand final replay. It was great. Please let us win another flag in the next few years, but at the MCG this time

Fantastic work, Solemn Sloth, and cheers to Hume for the prior years' efforts. As a paid up international Saints member (because the Watch AFL pass + goodies is usually a good deal) I'm really hoping we live up to some of the promise of 2020 and not struggling with injuries like other years. Really hoping this year can go forward in Australia without the shuttles, central bases and midnight flights out as they were run the past two seasons.

Same company bought naming rights to the arena in Los Angeles where the NBA Lakers and Clippers play on a 20-year deal, and that seems like a good chance they won’t see it out.
