The Randall situation does seem a bit strange. From what I can tell, she was cleared medically to play, but the AFL has a new system in place where they can decide based on footage alone that someone shouldn't play?

https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/spor...3a75daf303b2766

Some interesting quotes:

quote:

Despite being clinically cleared by club doctors of concussion from a head knock suffered against Melbourne last Friday, and training with the Crows this week, Randall was ruled out of Adelaide’s semi-final against Collingwood on Saturday, after she was placed in the AFL’s concussion protocols.

This happened after the AFL’s chief medical officer Michael Makdissi provided the Crows fresh footage of the hit, and Adelaide and league doctors decided this was enough to rule out Randall on Wednesday night – days after she had suffered the hit and also been clinically passed to play.

quote:

“Clinically when you get reviewed for concussion you go through all the tests, and I was cleared clinically,” [Randall] said.

“But there is another part of that and basically when the vision has been decided by higher up you don’t have another say in that.
“In this scenario it is frustrating and I’m disappointed in the system and the process because clinically I was cleared of all that and it was only late last night that I found out it had changed.

“I feel fine, it is a frustrating one.

“Speaking with the medical team, unfortunately with this process it means that some players who actually aren’t concussed will miss games. That’s part of the process using the vision.

“If I had the same knock at training we wouldn’t have vision and I would be clinically passed and I would be able to play.”

Given that Randall showed immense class when she had to miss the 2021 GF with concussion, her frustration here is at least notable.

It's still not clear to me whether this is a case of the AFL saying "we've reviewed the footage and strongly recommend that you don't play Randall" and the club basically acquiescing, or if it's simply the AFL providing additional footage and the club saying "uh oh, we've better look closer at this" and making the decision themselves. Randall's comments do kind of make it sound like it's the former.

Baby you can shout at me,

She lost her balance and fell over when trying to take her kick, thankfully the umpire on the spot was onto things and sent her off with the blood rule.

It was off frame on the broadcast camera, but clearly the AFL found vision that shows she didn’t trip, she just fell over. Given the fact that she had a nasty collision immediately before that it seems a pretty simple decision to trigger the concussion protocol.

Players are literally the worst people to ask, that’s why we have this whole thing setup in the first place.

The impression I got was that the footage is of the incident with caused the concussion, not of her falling over.

100% agree that you can't trust the players to make this call, but the club doctors had already ticked off on it.

Adelaide vs Collingwood was delayed 30 minutes for lightning, and then torrential rain came down during Q1. They've delayed the start of Q2 by 30 minutes, but there's still lightning going on around here so there may be more delays coming.

Blow the siren and award the game to the Crows IMHO.

Crows AFLW 2017 premiership player Heather Anderson sadly took her own life yesterday morning. People who watched the 2017 season may remember her as the player with the pink helmet that she wore because her Mum was vision impaired and it made it easier to see her. Or you may remember her as the player who dislocated her shoulder in the 2017 grand final and never played again. In addition to football, she was an army medic in NT and a fitness fanatic, who used to run from one side of ACT to the other for training when she lived in Canberra.

Fuckin' hell. I hope the AFL/W gets some proper counselling in for younger players, especially in the women's league while they're trying to balance life, work and bills on top of playing a pretty demanding season and getting paid gently caress all for it, often with injury tolls.

Congrats Dees fans :unsmith: You guys have been strong for a long time, so probably deserved to break through for a flag at last.

Got to say though, Brisbane would be furious at losing yet another close GF. 1-3 is not the record you want in grand finals, especially when they're actually 2 points ahead over the course of those four matches. (6 point loss, 6 point loss, 18 point win, 4 point loss).

Not that it had much of an impact, really. We gave up picks 46, 56 and 59 to match the bid, and still got back two picks (69 and 79) in return.

It's pretty crazy how clubs can match bids in the first round with a bunch of chicken feed from late in the draft and that's equitable, apparently. Brisbane matched the Ashcroft bid by giving up 34, 35, 38, 40 and 41 and even got some picks back the other way, and that's supposed to be equivalent to pick 2? Insanity. If a club actually did that trade (giving up pick 2 for five picks in the 30s and 40s) there would be a lynch mob outside their office the next morning.

The Swans chose chaos and I love it. Two bids probably 10 spots before they should have gone and then traded out the pick to Hawthorn. I hope the Bulldogs bid on Davey with our first pick today.

They used one of the picks they got from Hawthorn to bid on a Hawthorn NGA player too. Surprised they didn't decide to gently caress Essendon with bids on both Daveys and Munkara with their pick 40.

Watching the Swans list manager giving it to that AFL media hack was pretty funny too. Grumpy old dude has zero patience for draft season buzz words.

I think they still want to make it fairly easy to get a F/S pick onto the list. It's better now they can't do the same thing with NGA picks.

NGA picks are post pick 40 and they can be matched. I could have sworn that you can only use as many picks for points as you have list spots unless they haven't bought that rule back since 2020.

To let clubs move half of the salary out of the salary cap for mistake contracts, and players with career ending LTI for which the AFL are not remotely meeting their responsiblity of care.

So Adelaide just spent another bottom 4 or almost bottom 4 season filling the midfield group with 3rd round picks and using first round picks to fill niche positions forward and back, while clogging list spots with the same never will bes and has beens that nobody else has wanted for years. I think we have the least competent list management team in the comp.

The die was cast on that as soon as we traded for Rankine. He's a pretty handy player to bring in and could end up playing some midfield so fingers crossed the trade pays off, but it did leave us without any real draft capital.

Beyond that it was always going to be a late pick/trade into 2023 kind of draft for us. Yes, Michalanney ended up being a "first round pick" but we only gave up chicken feed for him. In practice, we just didn't take a first round pick this year.

I agree that it's irritating to be carrying the likes of McPherson on the rookie list when we could be rolling the dice on a new player, but hey, they would be even less likely to make it than the 3rd round pick midfielders we already took.

Problem is it's not just one season though, it's multiple seasons in a row off the back of an entire decade of poor first round drafting. There's not a single midfielder in the group of any age who is or will be in a top 20 in the league conversation now or in the future, and that's a real good way to get absolutely nowhere for another decade.

carlton and north pushed for good friday footy a decade ago, both clubs are located next to the RCH, and north probably want the gatekeepings so would be happy to get a carlton crowd to the game.

i am glad (if this fixture continues) that we have a marquee game going forward, even if it is in the middle of school holidays so will never be played at the mcg with a big crowd.
