Going in to see it the first time in '77 you could legitimately feel there was a chance he was going to fail. Having the hero win was different enough from the formula to help make the movie a hit. Yeah, you should see the deleted extended scene of Han trying to impress Leia with his old timey bicycle tricks. The '70s were a weird time in film making.
