OP, try Digable Planets' "Reachin'." It's a great album, lots of fun, and very easy to get into. Just grab it on whatever streaming service you prefer and put it on, you'll have a good time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyGy0ODCutE

what kind of music do you like, OP? sometimes finding stuff with beats similar to your preferred genre is a good way in. the good news is if you like soul/r&b there are hundreds of artists who use sample based beats edit: or anything with a live band - the roots were big for me in that way

I'm an old white man with old white man tastes The last time commercial rap worked for me was like back during crunk, like Bia Bia was good and David Banner's albums before he did that 9th Wonder collab is there any reason and/or any way I can get into what the kids are listening to? Like I tried to listen to Young Thug since he seems to carry a bit of respect and Uzi Vert etc but this whole era just isn't doing it for me

If you could listen to crunk there’s 100% current stuff that’s out there for you, it might just take a bit more sifting through

I'm so out of touch with anything new besides Kendrick Lamar, whom I definitely would recommend. I'll just give some others that I would always recommend when I was actually current with music. Oh and Death Grips is an absolute blast, I found them through the drummer (Zach Hill) and his old projects. You could always go with the classics. Like Wu Tang, Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest. They all kind of paved the way for rap to get maintstream in a big way. Following NWA's breakup brought Dr. Dre, Easy-E, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, etc. Also Beastie Boys are a fun listen if you're not into the gangster rap stuff. Straying further from mainstream rap in the early 2000s was artists like Del (and the classic Deltron 3030), Atmosphere, Sage Francis, Immortal Technique, MF Doom (especially Madvillanly). I fell off of rap and hiphop around the late 2000s/early 2010s but some more recent artists that I've latched onto has been Run The Jewels (and their solo works) especially with the recent political climate. Really I would find any sort of list about the top albums from a certain era and give them a shot. There's a lot of different things that make each era unique so it's hard to give people any single recommendation unless they already know what they're looking for. Edit: Oh, also there are some great instrumental hiphop artists too that are always good for background listening: DJ Shadow (Endtroducing), RJD2, Madlib, The Avalanches, Blockhead cage-free egghead fucked around with this message at 20:25 on Jan 11, 2022 |

I'm gonna nth recommendations of A Tribe Called Quest. Their sound is very accessible and smooth, and the content is a range from funny boppy stories to real struggles of people of color. Everything is interesting, easy to listen to, and very classic. Mos Def's Black on Both sides is also a very classic hip hop album. Actually, Mos Def/Yasiin Bey in general is a great place to start. He's very lyrically proficient yet easy to understand because he's not machine gun fast. His content is interesting as well. I think a lot of his beats are really technically interesting to listen to as well. Especially this track, it's maybe my all time favorite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uq3syNck274

Vincent Van Goatse posted:So I'm a terribly white dude who doesn't know poo poo about rap besides appreciating Biz Markie (RIP) and seeing Snoop Dogg at a club once. I used to be one of those "I like everything but country and rap" idiots but I'm willing to learn. Before I make my suggestion, its important that you know that I don't like rap. I don't listen to rap. I know some rappers, i've heard some songs.. but its just not for me. That being said, there is one rapper I like and he pretty much only does freestyle. If you haven't heard of Harry Mack, then my guy (girl, or other) you are missing out. Harry is a 30+ yr old rapper who mostly freestyles. About a year ago he started blowing up on youtube because of how insanely good he is. I'm linking one of my favorite video of him, Omegle 30. He goes on omegle, connects with random stranger and asks them a few words. He then uses these to make up a song on the fly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtjdWxFcOc4 I highly recommend you watch the whole thing, he uses his interaction with people to add to the song. Honestly, I recommend all his omegles, its amazing. Another one of my favorites is 29 for the last 2 songs

I don't claim to be above it because like I said above, I fell out of touch with what was in style a good while ago. I'm just saying there is a *big* world of rap music out there and because you're asking people who pay to post on an internet forum whose relevance peaked a long time ago (and again, I'm one of them; I'm not above anyone here), you're getting kind of a limited view.
