THREAD PLAYLIST HERE:
https://music.fyad.club/playlist/3990580

hi. do you think funk sounds like porn music? do you think it features slap bass and star shaped sunglasses? get educated. drat.

do your 80s p-funk thread elsewhere. that's not what i wanna post in this thread. let's keep it stylistically pre-1978. it's fine if it's a recent song, but we don't need that coke drip slap bass poo poo here.

i come at funk and soul from a 90s hip hop breakbeats background so there's a lot of like keb darge deep funk compilation type stuff in my head canon. but come, join me, as we post funk and soul music.

i love the meters, the second, new orleans lodestar of funk opposite james brown, so here's some meters/meters-backed tracks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXI5Nuz6OHg
apparently 'hand clapping song' is in a load of tv shows and ads, according to the youtube comments:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVdAfjxmfdI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jh3cygQeZ1E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6aEQJwM1g4

drat i am realizing i could fill a thread just with new orleans funk. anyway

here's a track from a show in 1968 where james brown's band basically played a full-rear end concert in like double time. maybe mr please please really had to poo poo and told the band to add 50 bpm to everything to get the concert over with. clyde stubblefield's drumming on this gives me chest pain to listen to (and repetitive stress injury to attempt to play on the drums). he is going so mad on the kit it sounds like drum and bass/ragga jungle chops.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek9-HGHT1Pk

the memphis bulldog mr. rufus thomas had a weirdass career trajectory of being old as hell (he started out as a minstrel!!! in 1936) and suddenly having hit funk records. he made like 15 'funky chicken/penguin/robot' type songs that are pretty much identical but they all are bops
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OWjDK-dLCU

galt macdermot - white guy pianist who made unbelievable atmospheric and moody funk tracks and wrote the soundtrack to the musical HAIR.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGprqs2rcRY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMsnnH7Tu34

current detroit band will sessions' bassist getting loose
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYX03jeqjus

S.O.U.L. - burning spear. just proof that flutes can be funky
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYD3nVoGaz0

and to slow it down, here's a straight soul song that has been getting me verklempt recently:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fuwd7_z5v0Y

who else is into this stuff? i could post approximately 1 million songs and variations on the genre so i'll leave it here for now. surprise me doodes. show me SA has some soul.

this song shows how deep poo poo could get, when you can listen to this and not think it's comical but actually that it loving slaps and the flute screaming technique is cool, you have made it to the mountaintop

pucho and the latin soul brothers... i suspect harold alexander was the flautist on this one too, and maybe the next. pucho was a Black dude but his band was pretty much latin funky boogaloo which is a whole nother multi-track, maybe even multi-part post... the fractal funk thread

it fits... i remember when this came out! people were making GBS threads themselves! malcom catto drummed on one track and the rest were sampled from live sessions i think. insanely good though. like godzilla coming through the speakers. as e-40 would say "pedestrians stumble sound like a gorilla tryna get up out the trunk".

fun fact, those guys made gaslamp killer's first mix ("gaslamp killers") for him using his records, or maybe it was vice versa, him making the mix from theirs.

eugene blacknell
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCeTxUjRyE8

people talk a lot about tower of power as the classic east bay sound, but I think they are pretty singular rather than representative of a movement in the bay. you can hear a little TOP feel in the eugene blacknell above, maybe.
still you should probably hear this. one of the few funk bands to stress virtuosity and not sound FAKE as hell. stay away from super skilled white jam bands playing funk music. funk is not chops music. it's butt music. butt in recording quality, butt in vocal smoothness, butt in arranging simplicity, sometimes literally butt in skill level of the musicians. but the kind of butt you WANT. butt that makes your butt move. anyway, Tower of Power is not that, they're super tight and sometimes complex arrangements and rhythms. They are the EXCEPTION to the funk rule.

please post heliocentrics and natural yogurt band and the mark of 4 and i marc 4 (two different bands) and italian policier soundtracks and the first half of 'chameleon' before we start the getting icky jazz chords in there.

BUT don't get too jazzy or i will pull out the nuclear weapon, the funk antijazz antimatter (salt hung up). actually i might just post the salt anyway pre-emptive strike style. you can't be too careful. if you let them some guys will start posting like chick corea or some poo poo. do not do this. i have more in my arsenal.

Salt - Hung Up. Legendary New Orleans garage funk. Played intentionally sloppily to the chagrin of cosimo matassa (legendary nola soul record producer, they recorded at his studio). Doesn't sell for poo poo. A young german man who founded one of the only good white funk bands ever, the poets of rhythm, is on a bus trip through the states in 1993 and finds a box of copies of the 7 inch single at some guys house. he only has enough money for five copies. he goes back to louisiana the next year and the box has been thrown out, making this song insanely rare but ALSO loving great. Listen to how hosed up and sloppy this is. It's great. ZERO CHOPS.

while the drummer here sounds 100% exactly like the one-of-a-kind zigaboo modeliste from the meters (see the first four tracks of the OP), it is in fact james black just absolutely biting him to a level of perfection that shouldn't be possible. i have heard zero other songs with drumming like this that aren't zigaboo drumming.

when it comes to 90s new orleans revival there's only one place i turn... actually it's not even the album, just this song. this is like the harold alexander buzz flute shrieking, if you can listen to this and not think it's cartoonishly like... a family guy parody of the sanford and son theme song or something, but actually react like '... drat this kinda hits hard' then you know you've fallen into the funk music rabbit hole. i just wish it was recorded to magnetic tape. it's a little 'clean' in the drum department. not phil collins clean but could be dirtier.
