When it comes to jazz/funk/fusion stuff, I love it, but don’t really know a whole lot about it. Especially where the lines start to blur and I’m supposed to be able to tell the difference. I had already intended on starting a thread about different DJs on Twitch, this seems like a good spot to add a couple of specific folks who tend to spin a lot of funk and work together a bunch. First off is DJ Epik, blue collar DJ from Sacramento who started streaming on Twitch and has garnered quite a following, especially from well known DJs. I always learn a bunch on his streams as his chat is full of super knowledgeable peeps. The only time he doesn’t play vinyl is his own production, and his collection is very impressive. https://twitch.tv/djepik Following Epik is another Sacramento resident, Shotgun Shima. Shima’s collection is absurd and dude is just an encyclopedia of music. He’s also a professor of Asian studies and an all around interesting dude. His Tuesday set is Lazerfunk and is nothing I ever recognize, but always fire. https://twitch.tv/shotgun_shima Last of these 3 is Pittsburgh resident and frequent DJ Epik collaborator BusCrates. Like the other guys, Bus just loving loves music, especially funky rear end keys. He’s got a show on Friday afternoons called Science Funk-tion that just loving goes. On top of his abilities as a selector, dude is really loving nice on the keys. This is his Twitch studio, everything you can see works. I’ve not caught one but he also does production streams pretty regularly. He’s also won more than one episode of the Twitch game show stream “who sampled?” https://twitch.tv/buscrates He released this album last year, Epik worked on a couple of the tracks with him and it’s a drat good bit of butt. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLBDeLFd78gkZpPnhutGwGOzXTHtt_6HGI Edit: Deep Glove Bruno posted:erase funkdoobiest from your mind. funkdoobiest is no longer, and never was. i take that back, funkdoobiest is ok Funkdoobiest gave us Pussy Ain’t poo poo, and for that I’m eternally grateful. highme fucked around with this message at 01:28 on Jan 14, 2022 |

My og pirating method after Napster and other p2p stuff went down was intense google-fu, usually using some combo of artist and album name, filetype:rar or filetype:zip, and site:megaupload or mediafire or one of the other hosting sites like that that I can’t remember any more. Very rare for this not to be successful in the mid 00s. Lots of times would find the link on random Spanish blogspots. Amassed a massive library this way, which is all stuck on an old external HD that I haven’t seen in years, and this forum has inspired me to find it

Hippie Hedgehog posted:How about Vulfpeck? I can't really poo poo on vulfpeck, they are good players and have some good songs (I really like their Game Winner with Charles Jones). My only caveat is the number of their fans who like them and don't seem to know or like the songs/genres that they're aping. Like they kinda do their best to make this clear by bringing in old players like david t walker or bernard purdie or whoever, and doing their weird videos about musicians they like, but i sometimes get that icky feeling that this white band has a bit of a white jamband audience that is not interested in their non white peers and originators. so the way to listen to vulfpeck is to go "hey that christmas in LA was catchy, lemme revisit foster sylvers misdemeanor". then it's fine. anyway here's game winner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3rwKl267gE and misdemeanor, which is a blatant jackson five rip, but nothing wrong with that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpr5vfAXp6s

I was listening to mixes on the strut in like 1999 when they were in realaudio haha. I miss soulstrut being active. Having soulman and raj and a few others' instagrams is not the same as the forum was. I think it's a good example of how social media made internet communities worse. All these people still digging, making music, doing mixes, etc but the exchange of ideas isn't in a public forum anymore, and the places where it is public (like reddit) are ignorant to the point of uselessness. Nobody who knows records wants to deal with reddit.
