Vampire Survivors is a one-versus-hordes timed survival game with a Castlevania-inspired aesthetic made by solo developer Ponca. It is currently available on Steam in Early Access for a measly $3/€2,39 and will give plenty of bang for your buck despite its early state. It currently features over a dozen playable characters, 25 weapons, and seven playable stages.

After picking your character and starting a round of Vampire Survivors, you have one weapon to your name and a small handful of enemies visible on the top-down playing field. Moving around is all you do as a player; every weapon fires automatically, with some allowing you to control the direction in which they fire. You'll gain a level once you've killed a few enemies and gathered their XP drops. Every time you level up, you get a chance to pick one of a number of upgrade types: a boost to your weapon's power, a brand new weapon to add to your arsenal, or a stat modifier. From hereon out you'll want to start thinking of your build, as you'll need to do more damage and cover more space as enemies become faster and more numerous. Sometimes you'll even be faced by a powerful boss or get boxed in by a large group of enemies! If you can manage the endless hordes of creatures of the night, you will slowly see your character become incredibly powerful, managing multiple weapons and filling the screen with so many damage indicators you'll barely be able to see your enemies.

A round of Vampire Survivors ends at 30 minutes. The grim reaper will appear on-screen and tear you to shreds unless you possess a very specific combination of items to stave off the inevitable. You can use the money you collected during your run to buy enhancements for future runs, adding a hint of rogueliteness to the game as well. You can also use your money to unlock additional characters, and a successful run will grant you access to a more dangerous (but more lucrative) version of the stage you beat.

In any given round you can collect up to 6 weapons as well as 6 stat boosters. Every character starts with one weapon (which takes up one of the six slots) as well as one stat booster (which doesn't take up one of the six slots, curiously enough). A fully upgraded weapon can also evolve into a more powerful version of itself if you collected the right stat booster to go along with it. These evolved weapons are definitely worth the investment, since you'll need all the help you can get to clear screens like these:

A couple of pointers to get you started:
  • Don't sweat it if you don't get very far in your first run. The permanent powerups you can buy in the store will make things more manageable for future runs.
  • Carefully consider which stat boosts you pick during a run. XP buffs and HP regen are nice, but if you build too defensively your damage will start to fall off before you know it.
  • It's better to pick two or three weapons and upgrade them a few times than to fill out your weapon slots early. Weapon upgrades give massive boosts to damage.

Couple more tips related to weapons/evolutions

-garlic and bible are really strong right now. Garlic will make you 100% safe from early monsters from the moment you pick it up and falls off later while bible evolved will make you invincible to pretty much everything that’s not a boss or weird gimmick

-you need to max out your weapon to evolve a weapon but you DONT need to level the buff item. It can be level 1 and you’re good, and since evolved weapons are SO good, you’re almost alway better off stacking weapon levels over buff levels once you have the buffs that correspond with your chosen weapons

-evolved weapons only come from chests

You can get 8 secondaries in the library. Stay near the middle and fill out your 6 slots. Head left, watching the top of the screen till you see the book. Pick it up. Head right, pick up the mask. Order of these two doesn’t matter.

If you get the book or the mask before you fill out your 6, they’ll just add a level.

the best weapons: Runetracer, Holy Wand, Unholy Vespers, Hellfire, Death Spiral

taking one or two weapons that can't evolve is Smart because that's one or two slots you can set aside for the almighty Duplicator or maybe the Attractorb I guess

It's kind of surprising how easy the game gets once you have a small handful of permanent boosts. This feels like the kind of game that should crush you under its boot until you master it, but I managed to do my first complete run on my third or fourth try.

It's also funny to me that the library is so much easier than the garden. Faster level-ups and a lack of damage check bosses make a world of difference.

I don’t bother with attractorb since I have some points in attract range and I hunt for those ‘pick up all the jewels on the map’ pickups. Duplicator is clutch though and what I usually run in my non-evolution free slot from garlic

Been playing this obsessively on and off today after a few hours cleared the hyper library with Pasqualina with evolved cross and bible, runetracer laurel garlic. At the very end I just stood in one spot and everything just banged it's head on my whirling circle of death. Garlic early on so you can stomp all the weak stuff was key. Only mob that got through the barrier was the final boss. It was weird hitting 30 minutes and having everything disappear and death pop in to stomp me dead.

The run I used to unlock the hyper library hade last 29 min 30 seconds which was really frustrating.

Also you can put in codes at the title screen for unlocks. Two I know of so far, you have to be pretty quick to get them to register.

Hyper has been great, definitely my preferred way to play now. Garlic does seem good for clearing trash at the start, but I feel like I can clear that with a variety of stuff if I play aggro enough and it ends up feeling like sort of a wasted slot to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

Curious if anyone has been doing +area builds with stuff like garlic and Santa’s water etc and making it work? I have tended to go for scaling mostly on other dimensions.

You can get more than six secondaries anywhere. It’s rare but if you already have most of your items maxed out the big chests with multiple items will sometimes give you a new one instead of just gold, which can be leveled up normally after that.

The 6 weapon limit seems to be a hard cap though.

Giving some insight to Laurel - it puts up a barrier around your character until consumed, then has some recharge time to bring it back up to power. Higher levels will grant some additional layers. You have a very brief invulnerability period after being touched before either beginning to take real damage or sacrificing another layer (which will trigger the process again). It's purely defensive in nature, but it does give you some breathing space to actively shove your way through a pack if you need to reach an opening and/or item. It's probably most useful in the final minutes of a run when waves are beefy enough that even multiple upgrade weapons can have a hard time chewing through them fast enough, but it's obviously something of a detriment while you try to get your damage operational in the first place since it eats up a weapon slot. Not my first choice but if I don't find Garlic early enough in a run I'll often end up taking it.

I decided to try hyper Library with only duplicator (and orb grab radius) as upgrades. It was honestly more enjoyable than playing with all the various upgrades I used before.

Previously I said that with only long range weapons no enemies will get in bible range. This was indeed the case minute 15 to minute 28, but the last 2 minutes where a bit more close than expected (with passive upgrades they never get close). Either way, it was still enough without any close range weapons (garlic/bible/whip), just standing still.

I did a regular library run with no upgrades today and yeah, I think this is the way to play the game once you get to a point where regular runs become too easy for you. There was still plenty of downtime, but there were also a good number of encounters that really had me on the ropes. The final 30 seconds were especially difficult. I got really lucky with an early duplicator drop as well. Not sure I would've made it past the first couple of minutes without it.

I found the mask in the library within like 5 or 6 background rotations walking to the right (like the 6th cubby in the upper part of the map). What's this book? is there a duplicator guaranteed to spawn in the library too, or is it just the mask?

Broken Box
Jan 29, 2009

With maxed laurel and time knife (powerups reducing cooldowns and increasing ability durations also help) you can survive death indefinitely. Laurel will give you invincibility to survive instadeath and then the time lancet will freeze death in place while the laurel invincibility regenerates. More deaths will spawn, but if you keep walking they'll come at you one at a time, get blocked and frozen over and over. I made it 5 more minutes just to see if I could, then got bored and waited until enough deaths spawned on me to break through the shield.

Garlic DPS is garbage but it not only helps you survive the early/mid game, it gives you crucial knockback in the later game. If you're using the bible/vespers it doesn't damage anything inside the ring. With range up your ring can get pretty wide. Garlic benefits from range and tick damage will kill off a lot of what gets through, and also bounce enemies back into the ring of books to take even more damage from them.

Bracer also works incredibly well with Bible/vespers because it increases damage the faster it circles you, you more hits it gets in.

Thankfully, there are no ranged enemies in this game. I guess in some ways it's still a bullet hell because the enemies are analogous to bullets themselves though

I'm enjoying the game a lot. Been playing it during commercial breaks of football games and other stuff, it's a nice pick up and put down game. A LONG way to go to get all the upgrades but I can already go for a really long time in the library if I get decent weapons.

In my opinion garlic is so good for the early and mid game that it's an instant buy anyways. It allows you to harvest XP at great speed. Any late game benefits are great but not even required
