The universe isn't fair. Just as billions of intelligent, emotionally complex animals are raised merely to provide sustenance for others, you were born to suffer. Eternally. Because somehow, quite unjustly by your estimation, you have ended up in Hell. Whether a poor damned soul who worshipped the wrong god or broke some arcane rule; or a young daemon who, unlike the eldest of your kind, was born into hell with no option of not rebelling against the Tyranny of Heaven. It just doesn't seem fair that your fate is to suffer, greatly you might add, for all of eternity. A long time, eternity. But for the souls gathered here eternity has been no more than a couple of hours so far.  You stand beneath a Soulfount, one of many, where the freshly dead bulk of humanity is rounded up, Burdened, and divvied out to the various Daemons Maior that lay claim to this territory. Sensitive work, and overseen by a daemon of great power, endurance, and trustworthiness: Velaoch the Many.  Multiple lines of souls are simultaneously driven and whipped towards his towering form to be assigned their fate; unresponsive or incoherent souls (the majority) are immediately crushed into a meaty brick roughly 2/3s of a meter long. The twitching of eyes and spasming of digits dispel any idea that this might bring any peace. The rest are given their Burden with a mere gesture of Velaoch's many claws and led away by low level demonic overseers, to be worked as slaves until one day they too are turned to brick. Or worse. On what side of this horrorshow are you standing on? A: You're a Soul. The remnant of a human being, now a shade of their former selves doomed to suffer for all time, either as slave labor or as the literal foundation of Hell's resource economy. B: You're a Demon. What's your Nature? The balance of your Daemonic Humours? Try filling the blank here: "You, more than anything else, wish _____" A. To Rule  Those close to you say that you have an excess of Pathos. You have a good education, decent skills, and you're no slouch on the battlefield. Capable anywhere, where you truly excel is in understanding others, and making them do what you want. But empathy in Hell is a double-edged sword at best. A well-rounded and ambitious dilettante, who can sometimes get a bit overwhelmed by it all. Probably gonna aim to high too fast one day. B. For Luxury  Those close to you say that you have an excess of Tekhne. You're light on your feet, and you perform any physical task with skill and ease. You have some education and "people skills". Enough to get what you want, anyway. And there are so many things you want! A cruel kleptomaniac of a demon. Probably going to be decapitated for stealing artifacts from the vault one day. C. To Destroy  Those close to you say that you have an excess of Soma. You're tremendously powerful, and have the skill to put it to use. You're also an idiot. And a rageaholic. And you don't have any friends, or any idea as to why you would WANT friends in the first place. Probably going to get shot in the back by a smarter, weaker demon on the battlefield one day. D. For Knowledge  Those close to you say that you have an excess of Sophos. Sometimes you can be overly rational and dispassionate. You're a great intellect, and a decent conversationist. Just don't get into any fist fights, even with renegade Souls. An obnoxious know-it-all. Probably going to be crushed by an irritated legionnaire one day. *Hell being hell, there's something of an unequal social divide here, at least for low demons (Majors change their body and pronouns at will, though most settle on a single form after awhile). Most of demon society is patriarchal, and the closer to the Dis side of the political divide you get the more extreme it is. In the Fly's capital she-demons are little better than cattle. Your home city is mostly ok. Blah blah traditional gender roles, blah blah "succubae can't bench press as much as legionnaires you know", blah blah blah.
