A massive 7 ballots were turned in for the 2021 MMA awards. Hup hup and huzzah for all! [x] First place votes (x) Total points 1st place votes received 3.03 points, 2nd place votes received 2.02 points, and 3rd place votes received 1 point to help with tie-break scenarios. And aaaaaawaaaaay we go! Fighter of the Year 1. Charles Oliveira [4] (16.16) 2. Kamaru Usman [2] (12.12) 3. Max Holloway [1] (3.03) “Do Bronx” solidified himself as an upper echelon fighter this year, winning and defending the UFC Lightweight title with a pair of stoppage wins. In May, Charles put away the hard-hitting Michael Chandler early in the second round, a fight that may see some more awards down the line. He closed out 2021 with a third round submission of Dustin Poirier. That performance not only earned Oliveira a title defense signifying ruby on his belt, but it also extended his UFC record for most submission wins (15) and most finishes (18). Truly 2021 was the year of Do Bronx. Favorite Fighter 1. Max Holloway (7.04) 2. Tai Tuivasa [1] (5.05) 3. Charles Oliveira [1] (5.03) The Blessed Express is back, baby. Max Holloway is one of the most entertaining fighters in the entire sport, and he doesn’t appear to be a crime-doing rear end in a top hat, which helps a lot. Fight of the Year 1. UFC Vegas 25 - Jiri Prochazka vs Dominick Reyes [2] (10.08) 2. UFC 268 - Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler [1] (9.07) 3. UFC 266 - Alexander Volkanovski vs Brian Ortega [2] (7.06) It might be a testament to the limited number of ballots submitted, but it is incredibly rare for a fight that didn’t even hit the 10-minute mark to be called the Fight of the Year. Prochazka vs Reyes was just that wild and violent. Worst Fight of the Year 1. UFC 261 - Uriah Hall vs Chris Weidman [1] (5.05) 2. UFC Vegas 43 - Ketlen Vieira vs Miesha Tate [1] (4.03) 3. *TIE* UFC 259 - Aleksandar Rakic vs Thiago Santos [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* PFL 4 - Claressa Shields vs Brittney Elkin [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* PFL 10 - Abigail Montes vs Claressa Shields [1] (3.03) Usually, the worst fight of the year is reserved for a tepid, boring decision that’s a slog to watch. This year, people felt that Chris Weidman shattering his leg in 15 seconds was more painful to watch than Ketlen Vieira and Miesha Tate exchanging pawing jabs and interminable clinches. Though, you could probably chalk that up to people choosing to stop watching Vieira vs Tate after a few minutes, and letting the memories slip away. There’s no way to stop remembering Weidman’s leg all floppy. Also, just want to add that it’s hilarious that both of Claressa Shields’s horrible fights made the cut. Performance of the Year 1. UFC on ABC 1 - Max Holloway vs Calvin Kattar [5] (16.15) 2. UFC 263 - Brandon Moreno vs Deiveson Figueiredo [2] (11.10) 3. UFC Vegas 25 - Jiri Prochazka vs Dominick Reyes (4.04) “I’m the best boxer in the UFC, baby!” Jerome Max Holloway shouted that at the commentary team, while no-look slipping a punch from Kattar, and responding with his own strikes. Max put on an absolute striking clinic in January to return to his winning ways with a vengeance. Holloway landed 445 significant strikes, nearly 3.3 times more than Kattar did. He took the decision 50-43 x2, 50-42. It was a masterful performance of punches. Knockout of the Year 1. UFC Vegas 18 - Cory Sandhagen vs Frankie Edgar - Flying Knee [2] (10.10) 2. Invicta FC 44 - Emily Ducote vs Danielle Taylor - Head kick and punches [2] (6.06) 3. UFC 261 - Kamaru Usman vs Jorge Masvidal - Punch [1] (6.03) Flying knees loving rule. Especially when it’s at the start of the fight and it catches the opponent off-guard and BAM they get loving obliterated. Cory Sandhagen laid Frankie Edgar out cold early into the first round, cementing the number one spot. Submission of the Year 1. UFC 265 - Vicente Luque vs Michael Chiesa - D’arce choke [3] (9.09) 2. UFC 269 - Julianna Pena vs Amanda Nunes - Rear naked choke (4.04) 3. *TIE* UFC 262 - Andre Muniz vs Jacare Souza - Armbar [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* UFC 258 - Anthony Hernandez vs Rodolfo Vieira [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* Open Fighting Championship 2 - Mateus Santos vs Alexander Volodin - Brock Lock [1] (3.03) Luque seems pretty good at this whole D’arce choke thing, having nabbed 4 in the UFC, and this one against Chiesa was his 2nd in a row. Slick stuff from the Silent Assassin. Best Major Show of the Year 1. UFC 261 [2] (13.12) 2. UFC 264 [2] (9.08) 3. UFC 269 [1] (5.05) UFC 261 was a massively stacked card, with 3 titles on the line. Every main card fight ended inside the 2nd round, though that does include 2021’s Worst Fight of the Year, the 17-second shin snap of Chris Weidman. The title fights were good, though! Valentina Shevchenko out-muscled Jessica Andrade en-route to a crucifix elbows stoppage, Rose Namajunas used the power of American jingoism to fell Zhang Weili with a headkick, and Kamaru Usman obliterated Jorge Masvidal with a massive right cross. Worst Major Show of the Year 1. UFC Vegas 43 - Vieira vs Tate [3] (9.09) 2. *TIE* UFC Vegas 28 - Rozenstruik vs Sakai (2.02) 3. *TIE* UFC Vegas 40 - Ladd vs Dumont (2.02) How does 8 decisions in a row, only one finish, for a total of 10 out of 11 fights going the distance sound? Bad, right? Yup, you got it. Nobody liked Vieira vs Tate, but also nobody seems to like these lovely Vegas Apex cards with a bunch of fighters nobody has heard of. Well, too bad, because that’s what we get now. Just an endless stream of Contender Series dinks angrily and meatily slapping at each other, until the end of time. Round of the Year 1. UFC 266 - Merab Dvalishvili vs Marlon Moraes - Round 1 [4] (13.12) 2. UFC 268 - Justin Gaethje vs Michael Chandler - Round 1 (10.10) 3. UFC 269 - Charles Oliveira vs Dustin Poirier - Round 1 [1] (4.03) While I personally am sad to see the further decline of My Main Man Marlon “Magic” Moraes, his battle with Merab Dvalishvili was pretty rad. Marlon had Merab hurt a few times in the opening frame, but was unable to put the ultra-tough Georgian away. As usual, Moraes gassed, and Dvalishvili took advantage. Breakout Fighter of the Year 1. Jiri Prochazka [3] (9.09) 2. Islam Makhachev [2] (8.08) 3. Giga Chikadze [1] (7.05) Is it the weird top-knot? The adherence to BUSHIDO? Nah, it’s probably the cool spins and violence he does. Jiri only had one fight in 2021, but he made an impact, not just on Dominick Reyes’ brain, but on the hearts of fight fans. Now let’s see if he can do what the 2019 and 2020 Breakout fighters couldn’t do, and win the belt the following year. Most Improved 1. Glover Texeira [2] (6.06) 2. *TIE* Francis Ngannou [1] (5.05) 2. *TIE* Julianna Pena [1] (5.05) 2. *TIE* Brandon Moreno [1] (5.05) Glover Texeira has aged like a fine wine. I’m not sure if he’s greatly improved his skill set, which I think has always been “tough, heavy hands, good wrestling, suffocating top game”, but he won the UFC Light Heavyweight title days after his 42nd birthday, congrats to him! Upset of the Year 1. UFC 269 - Julianna Pena vs Amanda Nunes [7] (21.21) 2. Bellator 272 - Sergio Pettis vs Kyoji Horiguchi (5.04) 3. UFC 258 - Anthony Hernandez vs Rodolfo Vieira (3.02) Amanda Nunes had not lost since 2015. She had won 12 in a row, including 9 bouts to either win or defend a title. She was a -1125 favorite. Julianna Pena, at a +700 underdog managed to not get knocked out by Nunes’ power, and instead, hurt the Lioness with “Wine Mom Boxing” (Copyright Jack Slack) and choke out a wilting champion. Dear lord. Comeback of the Year 1. UFC 262 - Charles Oliviera vs Michael Chandler [3] (13.13) 2. Bellator 272 - Sergio Pettis vs Kyoji Horiguchi [1] (9.09) 3. UFC 259 - Kennedy Nzechukwu vs Carlos Ulberg [1] (3.03) The Year of Oliveira almost got stopped before it started. Chandler dropped Do Bronx in the 1st round and pounced, looking to finish the fight and capture UFC gold. Charles maintained his composure, avoided the majority of Chandler’s swarming punches, and survived to the horn. That kind of stuff just makes Oliviera mad, and he won the fight and the belt 19 seconds later. Foul of the Year 1. UFC 259 - Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling - Knee to the head of a grounded opponent [6] (18.18) 2. UFC 269 - Priscila Cachoeira vs Gillian Robertson - Repeated eye gouges (6.06) 3. UFC Vegas 21 - Leon Edwards vs Belal Muhammad - Eye pokes (2.00) The Big One, the Foul that was Foretold, the Moron’s Knee. Petr Yan saw Jon Jones smash Anthony Smith with a knee that nearly lost him the title, and the Russian decided to go for the brass ring, destroying Aljo’s head. Judging Incompetence 1. UFC 259 - Ron McCarthy having the fight 29-28 for Sterling prior to the illegal knee 2. *TIE* UFC Vegas 32 - Sal D’Amato and Dave Hagen both scoring the fight 29-28 for Maycee Barber over Miranda Maverick. All 20 media members on MMA Decisions and Chris Lee had the fight 29-28 for Maverick [1] (3.03) 2. *TIE* Sal D’Amato’s general ineptness [1] (3.03) Ron somehow gave the first round to Aljamain, which is all it took to put Sterling ahead on the cards going into the fourth round. Ultimately, it didn’t matter, as Aljo took the belt home, along with a nasty concussion, thanks to Yan’s inability to understand the rules. Best Division 1. Lightweight [2] (11.10) 2. Featherweight [1] (8.07) 3. Bantamweight [2] (8.06) The 155-pound division is now a four-time winner and now a back-to-back champ of Best Weightclass. The top of the division is a shark tank if the sharks were made out of chainsaws, as anyone is capable of tearing their opponent apart on a given night. The UFC champ is riding a 10-fight win streak, with 9 stoppages. The only real blemish on the top of the division is Conor McGregor, who hasn’t won a fight in 2 years, or a fight in the division going on 6 years. Bellator’s 155ers are solid too, with their own unbeaten Nurmagomedov knocking on the door of title contention, a hard-punching Brazilian Pitbull Brother holding the belt, and some solid competition. Worst Booking 1. UFC 261 - Allowing 15,000 people into an arena during an ongoing global pandemic [2] (6.06) 2. UFC 259 - Amanda Nunes vs Megan Anderson [1] (5.05) 3. *TIE* UFC creating the first consecutive-fight trilogy for Moreno vs Figueirdo, also making it the fastest turned around trilogy in UFC history [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* UFC making Gane vs Lewis an interim title fight barely 4 months after Francis Ngannou won the undisputed belt, and was not injured or suspended [1] (3.03) Covid-19, corona virus, the thing that would not die. Just over a year into the pandemic, with barely a few weeks after the first vaccines became widely available, UFC decided to cram over 15,000 people in Jacksonville, Florida to witness UFC 261. Worst Coaching Gameplan 1. UFC 259 - Petr Yan’s corner advising him to throw an illegal strike [3] (9.09) 2. UFC Vegas 38 - SBG ruining Johnny Walker [1] (5.05) 3. UFC 263 - Marvin Vettori being told to run face-first into Israel Adesanya’s punches and kicks (2.02) “Yes, kick him!” were the words that echoed through the arena as Petr Yan looked to his corner. With Aljamain Sterling on the ground in front of him, Yan followed his instruction and lost himself the Bantamweight title with one strike. Excellent work, men. Dumbest Career Move 1. Cody Garbrandt drops to Flyweight [1] (9.09) 2. UFC 259 - Petr Yan illegally knees Aljamain Sterling in the face, losing his Bantamweight title [2] (6.06) 3. *TIE* Claressa Shields decides to become a MMA fighter [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* UFC 264 - Conor McGregor throws full-force low kicks with an allegedly micro-fractured shin [1] (3.03) Yearly contender for MMA’s Dumbest Boy Alive, Cody Garbrandt, 1-4 in his last 5 bouts at Bantamweight, including a string of 3 straight knockout losses, decided to take his shaky chin and hamper it even further by dehydrating his fragile brain to 125 pounds. Shockingly, Garbrandt lost his Flyweight debut by 1st round knockout. Referee Incompetence 1. UFC 263 - Al Guinee watches Jamahal Hill crawl around with a floppy, broken arm and get punched repeatedly by Paul Craig before stopping the fight [3] (9.09) 2. UFC 259 - Mark Smith appears baffled at what to do following Petr Yan’s illegal knee to Aljamain Sterling [1] (5.05) 3. Herb Dean - Yearlong efforts at being bad at his job (4.02) This was a rough one to watch. Hill is clearly compromised to an extent that nothing he is doing can be reasonably considered “intelligent defense”. Al Guinee desires more violence, and urges the fight to continue, to everyone’s shock and disgust. Best Insult/Trash Talk 1. UFC 264 - “Karma’s not a bitch, it’s a mirror” Dustin Poirier to a shrieking, broken legged Conor McGregor [3] (9.09) 2. UFC on ABC 1 - “I’m a freshman? I’m the best boxer in the UFC!” Max Holloway to Calvin Kattar [1] (7.07) 3. UFC 259 - Tim Elliott confronting Jordin Espinosa about Espinosa allegedly being an abuser mid-fight, as Elliott punches and bleeds onto Jordin’s face (5.04) Much respect to Dustin for not just walking over and punching the already down and compromised McGregor in the head. Instead, Sluggin’ Dusty P dropped an excellent line and walked off with his wife. Best Post-Fight Interview 1. UFC Vegas 45 - Derrick Lewis dances after defeating Chris Daukaus, declares that to be for Rodney King, states that him throwing his cup into the crowd will somebody become a NFT, and he will only take another title fight if the 5-round rule is abolished for 3 rounds. [2] (8.08) 2. UFC 268 - Chris Barnett does a butt-slamming front flip after knocking out Gian Villante with a Big Beefy Boy Wheelkick [1] (6.05) 3. UFC 264 - “Karma’s not a bitch, it’s a mirror” Dustin Poirier to a shrieking, broken legged Conor McGregor [1] (3.03) It’s another in a long line of iconic post fight moments for Derrick Lewis. He lamented about how tiring it is to fight for more than 15 minutes (though this bout ended in the 1st round), he did something to reference his hot balls, and he stunted on a cop. Bless this man. Worst MMA Hype 1. *TIE* Conor McGregor in general [1] (3.03) 1. *TIE* Eddie Alvarez insisting he's undefeated in 2021 after getting the poo poo kicked out of him twice [1] (3.03) 1. *TIE* Cheyanne Buys threatening Montserrat Ruiz that she’ll “follow u home, bitch”, having lost the fight after spending roughly 14 minutes stuck in scarf hold position [1] (3.03) Conor’s lost his spark, Alvarez is delusional, and Buys just wanted someone to hold her tight that wasn’t JP. Most Overhyped and Underperformed 1. *TIE* UFC 269 - Amanda Nunes [1] (3.03) 1. *TIE* UFC 257 - Conor McGregor [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* Anthony Pettis (2.02) 3. *TIE* UFC on ABC 1 - Calvin Kattar (2.02) As detailed in the Upset of the Year entry, Amanda Nunes was an unstoppable wrecking machine. She hadn’t lost in years, she’d beaten every single woman that had ever held a UFC title at both Bantam and Featherweight. She was a -1125 favorite to win. And she just didn’t. Conor McGregor was more polite going into his UFC 257 rematch with Dustin Poirier, but he still had to throw out some trash talk. Conor claimed he would win in 60 seconds. Instead, he got his legs chewed up with calf kicks and was finished by strikes for the first time in his career in the 2nd round. Comedy in MMA 1. UFC 264 - Conor McGregor sitting on the ground with a broken leg, hurling insults at Dustin Poirier [3] (9.09) 2. UFC 264 - Tai Tuivasa doing shoeys, hollering, having a great time [1] (5.05) 3. *TIE* UFC 261 - Chris Weidman breaks his leg like how he broke Anderson Silva’s leg [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* UFC 268 - Chris Barnett doing flips and making the most of his time in the spotlight after his cool KO win [1] (3.03) “YER WOIFE’S IN ME DMS!” screeched the horrible little goblin man, his foot flopping at a jaunty angle. Schadenfreude in MMA 1. UFC 264 - Conor McGregor sitting on the ground with a broken leg, hurling insults at Dustin Poirier [4] (12.12) 2. Conor McGregor in general [1] (5.05) 3. UFC 261 - Jorge Masvidal claims Kamaru Usman has no punching power, gets knocked out for just the 2nd time in his career, having gone 13 years without being stopped via strikes (4.04) his foot went funny, lol Best Social Media Presence 1. @AngieOverkill - Angela Hill [2] (6.06) 2. @TheBeast_UFC - Derrick Lewis [1] (5.05) 3. *TIE* @JonnyBones - Jon Jones [1] (3.03) 3. *TIE* @StyleBender - Israel Adesanya [1] (3.03) Whether she’s calling out neckbeards for being literal under-the-bridge dwelling trolls, creating egg-art, or giving betting advice as Angie A. Smith, Angela Hill is hilarious online. 2022 Predictions quote:ROIDTECH quote:Five UFC title changes, one high-profile departure for Bellator, Demetrious Johnson retires quote:Dana White will book a match to decide an interim interim titleholder quote:- max's chin will finally crack and it will be a sad decline quote:--At least 3 other name UFC fighters will try to box Jake Paul, and because Jake is on Tour de France-level gear they will all lose LobsterMobster fucked around with this message at 17:10 on Jan 20, 2022 |
