Thomas Sankara seemed like an alright dude and it sucks he got couped in the 80s.quote:
Surprisingly, rich people didn't like him very much. I just like the mental image of the president spending his time off trying to fix a freezer he picked up from Charlie down the street.

So I've posted before about Peace Corps service. I served in Burkina Faso and this unfortunately breaks my heart. The country has been dealing with increasing aggression from "al-qaeda and ISIL" associated groups a.k.a Muslim Assholes. The country has a vast Muslim population but its typically a much gentler version than the Sharia law these guys want to install. They were up in Mali recently as well and did really cool poo poo like beat people for having phones that played music and destroyed graves. Cool poo poo like that. Anyway, even before this military rioting was not uncommon in Burkina Faso. I had to quickly leave a town when the local Military returned post Arab Spring and didnt get paid. They were loving pissed and flipped busses into the street, creating blockades, burned down police stations, fired AKs into the air, etc. Alot of these guys end up being sent way out into the desert far away from creature comforts but then find out they are unequipped, unguided, and being shot at. They are understandably mad. The current Pres has been unable to get the situation under control and the Military clearly things they're better equipped to run things. They've stated this is "NOT A COUP" which is still entirely possible. They weren't trying depose Pres. Compaore when I was there in 2010, they just wanted proper compensation for putting their lives on the line. The US has troops there but the ECOWAS nations are generally viewed as more France's problem. They came in and cleaned up a bit in Mali and I'm surprised they haven't done the same in BF. Likely still pissed that their boy Compaore got voted out finally.

Thank you for your service It seems like most or all of the ECOWAS countries are dealing with Islamic extremists taking over rural territory. Obviously totalistic assholes are on the rise in the late stages of capitalism, but do you think this is something that is endemic to the culture or is being agitated by outside influences?

Is it burkeena faso or burk-in-a faso it reminds me of the time i was doing my driver license test and the DMV guy was someone from Africa and he fell asleep so I just drove around town listening to Hot 102.9 and I got back to the dmv right when Big Tymers finished, he woke up scribbled some poo poo in his notepad and said I passed

The factors are overlapping and complex. Ask yourself are CRIPs in their modern iteration endemic to the culture or a result of outside forces? Theres no clear answer. Burkina Faso is desperately poor and has a large muslim population. Extremism tends to thrive in places like that but while I was there I found people to be incredibly accommodating and non-violent, kind, and sympathetic. The name of the country literally means Land of Upright People, they take pride in being neighborly. Its no surprise that the fundamentalists have found greater foothold on the North of the country. People live way more traditional lives out there and are much more nomadic, broadly. The cities are much more progressive theres a thriving Hip Hop scene in Ouaga and even a quietly growing out and proud LGBT community.

Yeah France is the big investor in BF and engagement in this area is a core Macron policy so IF this coup is western backed that's probably the first place to look. They had some problems with protestors blocking a military convoy late last year but I'm not sure if it ever made it through.
