I just finished watching Babylon 5 for the first time in the B5 Blind Watch thread, and now I'm jumping in to Deep Space Nine. I've seen most of TNG, Picard, Discovery, and some of the movies, but I'm not any sort of expert on Star Trek lore. This one's been on my watch list for awhile, so I've really been looking forward to getting into it. s01e01 & 02 – The Emissary, Parts 1 & 2
I will say that so far I'm really digging this. I tend to gravitate towards shows with politics and psycho/spiritual themes, so this is all right up my alley and I can see why it's been recommended to me before. I'd go so far as to say that the pilot has been more captivating than anything in TNG. discoukulele fucked around with this message at 22:16 on Feb 14, 2022 |

Has anyone made a mash-up of René Auberjonois's lines from Always Sunny as Odo? I've only seen the series once and it was a long time ago but I could see it working.

Still really digging the show. I already like it more than any other Trek series I've watched. My friend who's a big DS9 nerd is coming over tonight, so I might be watching more later.

s01e09 - Move Along Home Watched this one with my friend last night, so I wasn't really actively taking notes. LOL'd hard at the Wadi making a beeline for Quark at the beginning. The rest of it was so cheesy (the hop scotch puzzle ), but whatever, it was fun. Dax's dots continue to be inconsistent. Speaking of Dax, I love that the Wadi were like "oh, no one was ever actually in danger" even though Dax almost broke her leg.

Move Along Home is one of those 'bad but loving hilarious' episodes by most consensus. Also do love how Sisko gets into it and you can definitely tell he's a dad.

Sorry I've been away for a bit; I got sick and had life stuff happen, but I'm still very much invested in this show, so let's get to it. S01e13 – Battle Lines
S01e14 – The Storyteller
e: also, I was trying to think about how I'd rank the characters at this point, and really I like everyone so far. My friend who's really into the show says that everyone changes by the end, so I'm really looking forward to seeing the personal arcs that are going to develop. discoukulele fucked around with this message at 05:39 on Mar 7, 2022 |

Woebin posted:DS9 is the only show I can think of where I sincerely like all of the main characters. There's literally nobody I don't like in there and that's rare. Even the characters you're supposed to hate are likeable. Battle Lines always struck me as basically Hell as a team deathmatch server gone bad. Also pondering considering later episodes; they're in the Gamma Quadrant, did make me wonder if the particularly poetic and sadistic punishment for two groups who just won't behave might be the Dominion's work, or maybe just a rather poor but amusing allegory for what things like the Yugoslav wars look like from the perspective of Western media with no comprehension or knowledge of the history involved.

DS9 is the one where the actors' real names sound more sci-fi than their characters' names do.

My laptop died on me so I had issues being able to type up notes, but now that they're resolved, I'm transcribing my handwritten ones and I'm about to fire up the season 1 finale. So there'll be a megapost incoming. Hell yeah, lets wrap this season up.

s01e15 - In Progress So, my laptop died while I had my notes for this in a text file. But I remember liking it. Basically Kira connects with a holdout on one of Bajor’s moons that’s getting imminent domained for energy and Jake and Nog did capitalism. s01e16 - If Wishes Were Horses
s01e17 - The Foresaken
s01e18 - Dramatis Personae
s01e19 - Duet
s01e20 - In The Hands of the Prophets
I've really enjoyed the first season overall. It did start to drag a bit in the way that first seasons tend to. But I didn't really feel like any episodes were outright bad. I really enjoyed the finale, though, and I hope to see more of that kind of intrigue in the future. Definitely stoked for season 2! discoukulele fucked around with this message at 04:43 on Mar 19, 2022 |

The Noh-Jay Consortium, that's always fun to bring up. If Wishes Were Horses is a quietly significant one, it's where Sisko gets his iconic baseball. IIRC, the clock he builds in Dramatis Personae also remains on his desk.

lmao I thought the entire clock thing was a byproduct of the energy vortex and I kept waiting for the reveal that it's not a clock but some kind of doomsday orrery That's awesome that it carries forward, I'm gonna keep an eye out for it.

It's kinda tricky to figure out without context that the episode basically has characters possessed by members of the ruling class of a long-gone civilisation basically going full Shakespeare in their plots, schemes and obsessions at the expense of actually dealing with reality, Sisko's 'character' being obsessed with trivial hobbies while ignoring everything going on around him. Dax meanwhile is implied to be a senile elder, though I also like the interpretation that given Odo was iirc immune to it due to his anatomy being completely alien, the dual-brained Trill symbiont meant the effect didn't work quite right and manifested as apparent senility.

Another thing about that episode, (and I am hardly the first to point this out): It would've worked a lot better later on, after the main characters were more established, so their peculiar behaviors would be more at odds with who we know them to be. Or, (and this is something I don't think I've seen anyone mention), they could have made it so the role that each one took on was a sort of perversion or whatnot of who they actually are.

Yeah, it's kinda like how one of the first season TNG episodes had the 'everyone gets space drugged' bit which doesn't really work when you barely know the characters as is, but I suppose it just kinda goes with the first season of a Trek show that's still finding its feet and rehashing standard Trek gimmicks.

In TOS and TNG the idea was basically stripping away their inhibitions so you get a look at who they are deep down.

Yeah, that definitely threw me as a first timer. I was getting the impression that everyone was becoming twisted, extreme versions of themselves (Kira's anti-Cardassian paranoia, O'Brien's loyalty, etc), so the fact that they were taking on characteristics of specific people from the past went way over my head. 'bout to settle in and start Season 2 this evening discoukulele fucked around with this message at 01:15 on Mar 22, 2022 |

s02e03 – The Siege Didn’t really take notes during this episode because I was too busy watching it. I thought it was masterfully done. I feel like everything’s finally coming together in this show, and all of the principal cast got to have their own moments. Kira’s orb vision from the previous episode got fulfilled. Vedek Winn is going to be leading the investigation into the Cardassian/Kressari shipments to the Circle and I imagine she’s going to handle the evidence like -

Li Nalais is a favourite minor character of mine for being basically all too aware he was made a hero for what amounted to a lucky accident, he's in over his head, but he's going to try his damndest to do his job anyway, and tries to leverage that undeserved reputation to help with it.

Seriously. If you think think the juiciness is ramping up rapidly now, just wait till you get to season 3. You'll probably see a lot more people posting replies too. As good as DS9 is out of the gate, there's not really a whole lot to talk about quite yet, relatively speaking. For now it's mostly just, "show is good."
