s02e04 – Invasive Procedures
  • DS9 is evacuated because of plasma shenanigans
  • They rescue a cargo crew that was caught in the storm. They’re actually an aggressive boarding party led by a Klingon and they make Odo go inside a sorta Ghostbusters ghost trap thing.
  • Quark was helping them
  • but actually the Trill is in charge and he wants Dax’s symbiont. And of course Julian is the one who has to do it.
  • Dude is loving psycho and wants to be awake for the surgery
  • oh nm I guess it’s not that traumatic because I guess Trills have a little kangaroo pouch
  • Friendship ended with Verad Dax
  • Quark jumps a Klingon, feigns an injury, lockpicks Odo out of his box
  • The gang removes the symbiont from Verad and gives it back to Jadzia, Verad goes back to being a loser, all’s well that ends well.

  • It’s the return of Garak!
  • Garak got bit, and being the only Cardassian on the ship, it’s an international issue
  • Cardassians orphans are being raised by Bajorans
  • Rugal, the Cardassian kid, has to stay with the O’Briens while they investigate his treatment
  • and of course Rugal’s just hanging out on his fuckin’ phone
  • there’s a lot of Bashir / Garak ships, aren’t there?
  • Rugal’s father was involved in the decision to withdraw from Bajor, making him an enemy of Gul Dukat
  • Padar shows up. Allegedly he didn’t know Rugal was alive.
  • Father/son reunion goes off the rails
  • Rugal’s adoption was coordinated to humiliate his father for political reasons and Gul Dukat was behind it.
  • Rugal is given back to Padar
  • Garak gets cagey about why he’s against Gul Dukat

Including and especially by Garak's actor, Andrew Robinson!

Lovin' every minute of it.
Robinson wanted Garak to be openly gay (never happened, obviously). He pretty blatantly played the character as such (at least to those of us with a working gaydar), and apparently was never told to tone it down, much to everyone's gain.

E: Robinson also wrote a Garak-centric DS9 novel, "A Stitch in Time," which I understand is generally fondly regarded. Shamefully I have not read it yet, but I would assume Robinson really ramped it up in that (one would hope). Also I would bet real money it's written in the first person. Can't see how it could possibly not be, frankly.

E2: Btw print copies cost a fortune, but ebook versions are readily available. Also, because this universe is a fundamentally unjust universe: No, there is no audiobook version narrated by Robinson , so save yourself the hunt. Some redditors tried to get a petition going a while back, though.

Exploration is ill-advised.
Garak is apparently bi/pan considering said novel, though mind you it's hard to name a character he doesn't have some flirtatious subtext with. Except, maybe ironically, Kira. (To be fair, it becomes clear pretty quick that Kira will not take any Cardassian's bullshit and Garak, a celebrated bullshit artist, recognises and wisely respects this)

I have a copy. Was just sitting in my shelf of childhood junk too nostalgic to clear out. Had no idea it was worth anything but just checked eBay and wow.

Yes, it's written first person. It's framed with with an opening letter to "My Dear Doctor" Bashir to which Garak's attached his diary entries (the bulk of the novel).
Can't have read it again in the 20 years since, but I do remember it being quite good. Fondly regarded for sure.

Difficult to respond further on Garak's sexuality, without spoilers. So I'll leave that.

Fun fact about this one: When they were first putting the show's premise together, they originally intended a low-grav/wheelchair character to be one of the main cast, the science officer. Then they realized how hard and expensive it would be to do the weightless effects all the time. They already had one character who was really special-effects-heavy (Odo), so instead they went with the science officer idea that became Dax, and did Melora as a guest star instead.

Also, we were hoping you might mention the best part of this episode: the Klingon chef. :allears:

For what it's worth, the writer of the episode was himself disabled and used a wheelchair, and basically was writing the episode as sort of a response to the TNG episode where Worf's spine is broken and he treats it as the end of his life. He just... somehow hit on all the cliches of a disabled character being written by an able-bodied author anyway?

  • lmfao at this scene with the Grand Nagus getting his ear hair combed
  • The Ferengi are going into the wine business, which I support
  • The waiter plants the seeds of paranoia in Quark’s mind
  • The waiter is actually a feeeeeemale with prosthetic ears
  • Zek gives Kira a fancy-rear end Bajoran earring
  • aw and the waitress is in love with Quark. Also, as much as this is a 90’s show and I know Garak had the gay content he wanted cut out, I liked the touch of Dax nonchalantly mentioning that the waitress is in love with Quark before she knew she was a woman
  • The waitress and Quark take off in Zek’s ship to go into the Gamma Quadrant to get the Dosi to sign their contract
  • Rom creeps around in Pel’s room and discovers her secret
  • god the Dosi costumes and makeup are just awful
  • One of the Dosi reveals that they can’t sell the wine to the Ferengi and that they need to contact Karemma of :siren: The Dominion. :siren: I’m really excited to see more about them. My friend and I played Star Trek: Alliance – The Dominion War Campaign last year (it’s a co-op variant of the war game), so it was all very out of context for me. Nothing in that game was spoilerish other than the fact that the Dominion are hostiles in the Gamma Quadrant.
  • apparently even associating with Pel could put Quark in prison
  • Pel outs herself to the Nagus and Quark steps up to defend her, losing his Gamma Quadrant profits in the process. Then they have to say their goodbyes (just for now, I hope).

  • Pallra has shady financial dealings going on
  • A mining engineer might’ve gotten killed by Pallra because Odo leaked his name (or something close to it)

Fun fact: The original script for Sanctuary had Bajor letting them settle, but the writers didn't like that there wasn't really a twist to the situation and someone suggested that Bajor reject them. Once that idea was entertained the rest of the story fell into place and they realized they had a real gut punch of an episode.

Yeah, ideally the Bajorans should have been more welcoming, but I can't blame them for a, being suspicious about millions of aliens demanding to settle there and b, being skeptical that Bajor's really in a position to absorb millions more people when they're struggling to rebuild as it is.
