Wise Fire nods. "We'd better meet back here in an hour and discuss what we've found. Kai go with you."

***

Brave Spirit and Bold Oak walk over to the spot where the watcher disappeared. It takes them about ten minutes. Immediately, they spot a series of tracks.

Brave Spirit starts to follow them, but even without her training in the Tracking discipline, Bold Oak can quite clearly see the fresh prints in the soft soil.

As they walk, the trees start to thicken around them. There's a thick layer of fallen leaves beneath them, deadening the sounds of their footfalls.

Brave Spirit frowns. By this point the layers of leaves are so thick that the tracks are becoming difficult to follow. But quite suddenly, they come across the dead body of a man, lying in front of a tree.

Bold Oak looks left and right as Brave Spirit drops down to check the corpse. What happened to him? Is there danger? I don't sense anything.

Brave Spirit examines his head. It's at an unnatural angle. "He broke his neck? How?" She stands up and looks at the tree. "I think... he ran into the trunk? Simple carelessness?" She looks around. "I can't see any other explanation. He must have tripped over the roots."

She searches the body. He's dressed in stained clothing, including a leather jerkin and a woolen hat. He is armed, with a bow, a quiver of arrows, and a rusted shortsword.

Ah. She finds a bag containing 6 Gold Crowns. "Bold Oak, do you think we can take these?"

He considers it. "I suppose there's no sense in just leaving them out here... Who was this man? A bandit?"

"It seems so. I don't think there's anything else to do here, let's go back and wait for the others."

***

After they spend half an hour waiting at the meeting point, True Dancer and Wise Fire return.

"We followed the trail a while-" explains True Dancer. "-but we hadn't reached the end, and we needed to come back and meet with the two of you."

***

After Bold Oak explains what they found, True Dancer muses. "He was spying on us, but why? He couldn't have been part of the caravan could he?"

Bold Oak shakes his head. "I don't think he'd have had such an old sword if he was one of the guards, and I don't think a merchant would have had a bow. I think he was a bandit. It seems most likely that bandits attacked the caravan, and this man was one of their scouts. Anyway, let's follow the tracks and see if we can find the caravan."

***

Reaching the end of the wagon tracks takes a further hour. The tracks terminate at a large body of water, which they recognise as Lake Helmar.

The usual beauty of the area has been marred by the wagon that has been upturned and dumped in the water. The other is still on dry land, but one of its wheels is missing. There's no sign of the cargo, the merchants, or the guards.

"What happened here?" asks True Dancer.

Brave Spirit examines the wagons. There's dried blood splattered over them. The wagon in the lake has a couple of arrows stuck in it. The other has marks on it indicating that arrows were embedded in it and then retrieved.

Wise Fire starts to check the tracks around the area. She walks towards the trees, and pauses. She can smell decomposing flesh.

"Over here!" she calls to the others, and then moves forward. As they gather around, she discovers six bodies, all lying together.

It looks as though someone tried to cover them with leaves, but the animals of the forest have been gnawing at their faces. Judging by their clothes, these four were bodyguards... This was a merchant... I don't know who this sixth one might be.

Brave Spirit also examines the corpses. "They all died from sword blows or from arrows. Wait- This merchant has had his throat cut."

Feeling unsettled, Bold Oak and True Dancer turn away.

"Ah, what's this?" Brave Spirit rolls over the sixth man's body to reveal a bow and quiver. "This one may have been one of the attackers."

True Dancer turns around, and suddenly springs forward. "I can use those!" She pulls them both free, and dons the quiver. "Six arrows!" She notches one and takes aim at a nearby tree.

"This isn't-" Bold Oak begins, and then freezes. He spins around to face the trees to the north. "Bows, NOW!"

As the other start to fumble, a group of men armed with swords and axes burst out from cover and charge.

Brave Spirit takes another look at the ground. "I think there's another trail here. I expect that if we follow it, we'll find everything and everyone else from the caravan."

***

Fifteen minutes later, the Kai arrive at some sort of the encampment amidst the trees. The trail leading up to it appears to be well-travelled. No one seems to be around, but eight horses are corralled in an area ringed by crude fencing. Several tents stand nearby.

A: "We could try and sense anyone nearby" says Bold Oak.
B: "Let me check the tents quietly." suggests Wise Fire.
C: "We could just call out to see if anyone's here." ventures True Dancer.

Wise Fire quietly lopes towards the encampment.

As Wise Fire has both Camouflage and Stealth, and there's no opposition, she can succeed at this automatically.

A couple of minutes pass, then her voice rings out. "It's all right, it's safe to approach."

Following her into one of the tents, the other three find her holding her dagger to the throat of a cowering bandit. Three tired-looking merchants are sitting in the corner, bound, but wearing expressions of relief.

"Brave Spirit-" begins Wise Fire. "Please get the rope out of my backpack and use it to bind the hands of our friend here."

"Our friend? ...Oh, I see what you mean." Brave Spirit moves behind Wise Fire and starts to search through the pack.

Bold Oak walks to the merchants and starts to cut their bonds with his sword.

"Everyone all right?" asks True Dancer.

"Y-yes." replies one of them. He shakes himself. "My name is Trevis. I was in charge of the caravan. Kai be praised, that we should be rescued." He inhales. "We were wary of attack on the road, so we left the path. Foolishness, for we walked right into an ambush!"

As Brave Spirit finishes binding the bandit, the merchants get up and stretch.

"Our cargo should still be here somewhere..." continues Trevis.

Wise Fire nods. "I located it in one of the other tents. We can go and pick it up."

Trevis nods. His gaze falls upon the bandit and his face reddens. He approaches, and hits him very hard in the face. There's a crunching noise, and blood sprays onto the ground.

"All right, that's enough." says Wise Fire. "We can guide you back to your wagons and help get them ready for travel. This fellow can return to Holmgard with you, the reeves there can decide what should be done with him."

"What about us?" asks True Dancer.

"We need to return to the monastery." states Bold Oak. "Our mission is now complete."

"Ah, we would appreciate it if you could accompany us." says Trevis nervously. "All our guards are dead, and I don't know if we can watch the prisoner properly."

Brave Spirit frowns. I don't know... I think we do need to get back and explain what's happened, but they would benefit from our protection...

"Let's go deal with the wagons, and sort it out afterwards." True Dancer suggests.

***

While Wise Fire watches the prisoner, the others manage to haul the wagons into position, and make them ready for travel. The horses the merchants have retrieved from the bandit camp are thankfully calm, and it's not too difficult to get them into position.

"We have to bury our fellows." says Trevis. "The bandits can rot beneath the sun."

True Dancer looks at the other uneasily.

A: "No, we should bury them as well." Brave Spirit objects.
B: Bold Oak shakes his head. "Why bother? Leave them."

C: "After that-" continues Bold Oak. "We need to return to the Kai Monastery."
D: "I would suggest that we accompany the merchants to Holmgard instead." replies Wise Fire.
E: "How about we return to the Kai Monastery but take the prisoner with us?" suggests True Dancer.

While the merchants start the burials, the four Kai gather up the bodies of the bandits and build a pyre, using thick branches from the nearby trees. Wise Fire borrows a tinderbox from the merchants and puts fire to it.

Trevis gives them a disapproving look and spits on the ground.

"Hey, you-" exclaims True Dancer, but he walks away.

***

The merchants speak a prayer to Ishir over the grave of their friend.

"Melsiar was a good friend and a loyal companion." pronounces Trevis. "May his spirit be protected. May he know peace."

He exhales, and turns to the others. "There's nothing else to do here. It's time to complete the journey to Holmgard."

***

Bold Oak shakes hands with the merchants, then turns to the other Kai.

"I'll see you back at the monastery. Any message for River Blade?"

"Just tell her that we're completing our duties, and we'll be back soon." replies Brave Spirit.

True Dancer nods. "Travel safely."

Bold Oak nods back. He turns and walks off down the path. He hesitates, and then turns back.

"Kai go with you!" he calls.

***

The three remaining Kai and the merchants direct the wagons up the trail, and rejoin the King's Highway. Only a few hours of daylight remain, not enough for them to complete the trip to the capital. Fortunately, they soon reach an inn, and Trevis suggests that they spend the night there and continue to Holmgard in the morning. He happily pays for the cost of the Kai Ladies' overnight stay.

***

Elsewhere, Bold Oak finds a secluded hollow in the trees in which to sleep. He eats a meal from his backpack and does what he can to make himself comfortable.

In his sleep, he can see a great light shining, but whenever he tries to face it squarely, it moves away from him, always preventing him from getting a clear look at it.

***

The Kai ladies sleep soundly.

Shortly after dawn, they rise from their beds, and meet up with the merchants outside to continue their journey.

The rest of the ride is uneventful and they arrive at Holmgard in the early evening. The guards attending the North Gate recognise Trevis, and they promptly wave him through. He leads the Kai through the teeming streets of Holmgard to the entrance to the Guild Quarter.

The Kai keep being distracted by the buildings, shops and gardens that they see as they travel. It's a struggle for them to stay focused on the journey.

After he shows them his Trademaster's Seal, the guards at the gate open the doors and allow everyone to enter. Trevis gives the wagons into their care and starts to talk to his fellow merchants.

Momentarily, the Kai are left to their own devices. The streets are filled with traders.

Trevis leads the Kai along Duana Street, past spice merchants, florists and perfumiers. They arrive at a stone building with a green roof.

"This is our Guildhall, the second oldest building in the city." explains Trevis. "I believe that our Guildmaster will wish to thank you personally for your aid!"

***

Guildmaster Balnor Gage sits on his chair. True Dancer looks at him dubiously. Isn't that a throne? Does the King know about this?

"So, Trevis. I imagine that your delayed arrival isn't simply due to unfortunate weather, or the sudden emergence of a new opportunity. I'm eager to hear what has happened."

Trevis explains how he and his associates made the decision to leave the road, and the subsequent bandit attack and their capture.

"And then we were stuck there until the Kai arrived."

Balnor nods, and turns to them. "And what of you? Can you tell me about how you came to rescue them?"

"We received word that the caravan had gone missing, so we started to search for its tracks-" explains Brave Spirit. "-and while we were proceeding with our search, we were attacked by the bandits. Shortly before that, we found the body of one who foolishly broke his neck running into a tree after we spotting him spying on us. I suspect that they must have been watching for a while."

"But they couldn't stand up to us in a fight!" adds True Dancer.

"Yes, we were able to eliminate them with little difficulty. The last one at the encampment we were able to capture."

"You should have him interrogated." says Wise Fire suddenly. "We have assumed that we have found all the bandits, but that may not be the case."

"Yes, yes, he'll be dealt with." replies Balnor. "You have served with great distinction, and the Order shall be proud of your achievements! Please stay the night, and allow us to welcome you as our honoured guests."

***

Bold Oak, back at the Kai Monastery, is giving River Blade a similar explanation. "I was able to lead the others to the bandits, and I engaged the leader in combat-"

***

At the Guildhall, there's a banquet in progress. Guildmaster Balnor, has had the finest food served. Behind the hubbub of conversation, there's music, being played by musicians from the Royal Court.

True Dancer quaffs a goblet of wine. Brave Spirit glares at her, and then turns to Wise Fire.

"You don't seem too hungry?"

Wise Fire toys with the meat on her plate. "I prefer something simpler."

"It's hardly a good way to show appreciation for their hospitality."

True Dancer quaffs more wine. She refills her cup.

"Eating this could be a form of gluttony." suggests Wise Fire.

"Well-"

True Dancer quaffs more wine.

"-will you please stop that!" says Brave Spirit, suddenly turning. "Overindulgence of that sort-" She pauses, noticing the tears trickling from True Dancer's eyes.

"I keep seeing their faces!" she complains. "I thought I'd feel better, but-" she slurps some more wine. "-it keeps getting worse!"

"The bandits?" asks Brave Spirit.

"Yes, of course the bandits! The dead bandits, the ones we killed!" She starts to drink again, but Wise Fire snatches the cup away.

"You'd better stop that, it's not going to help."

True Dancer momentarily flails at her, then gives up.

"We'd better get some sleep, and then rise early." Wise Fire suggests.

The next day, the Kai agree to return the way they came.

As they pass through the North Gate one of the guards approaches them, waving to get their attention.

“I’m Corporal Jordun. I hate to impose upon you, but I’ve learned there is a spot of trouble going on near Searsheld. Would you be prepared to go to Searsheld and see what’s amiss? I’m authorised to supply you with fresh horses to help make your ride swifter and more comfortable.”

Wise Fire looks over at True Dancer, but she's clutching her head, and not paying attention. Brave Spirit is just looking at the corporal silently.

Wise Fire turns back to Jordun. I can't sense anything suspicious. "What is this 'spot of trouble'?"

“A lieutenant has sent me a letter saying he’s scared about what could happen soon in Searsheld,” he explains. “To be honest, I’m not really sure what the problem is, but it’s very unlike the Lieutenant and his men to be scared of anything. I think a little bit of Kai wisdom may be all they need to calm their nerves.”

"If we do that then our journey will take longer, we'll have to travel west, and then north." Jordun's face starts to fall. "But it's our duty to help, if you think it's worthwhile." Wise Fire faces the other two. "Isn't that correct?"

Brave Spirit nods. "We will have to pass the Graveyard of the Ancients, but that shouldn't be a problem if we're cautious."

True Dancer still isn't paying attention.

"Thank you, thank you!" Jordun hands Wise Fire a letter. "This is what he sent me."

Frowning, she opens it up and starts reading.

"We are beset by wickedness and we’re in dire need of help. The morale of my men is suffering greatly. Several have disappeared. I am sure they have deserted their posts and run away. We all feel like running away. If we are to hold the fort and keep Searsheld safe, we are going to need some help. Jordun, my old friend, please do what you can to persuade someone in authority to come to our aid. I’ve sent messages to the Court Guard Captain requesting reinforcements, but he says he can’t spare any men. He told me to pull myself together and do the job I’m paid to do. He just doesn’t appreciate the situation. I fear that, by the time he does, it will be too late."

"This was sent by Lieutentant Perle. He's not really a friend, we barely know each other. I think he's desperate."

Jordun frowns. "The strange thing is, I do have a couple of real friends in that vicinity, but neither of them has written to me of this matter. Odd."

"Well-" says Wise Fire. "-let's get going."

***

They pass through the West Gate, and set off down the road. A wind is blowing in from the north-east, carrying the smell of graves. Brave Spirit continues to ride on calmly, but Wise Fire keeps casting her eyes around uneasily. True Dancer starts to do the same.

There don't seem to be many people on the road.

They reach a junction. The north road leads into the Graveyard. Wise Fire looks in that direction pensively, and then turns to the west. She pauses, and then looks north again.

"Come on, we need to keep going." says Brave Spirit.

"I think-" Wise Fire begins.

They abruptly hear a voice crying from the north. "Help!"

They look at each other. They can't investigate without entering the Graveyard.

"Is this a trick?" Brave Spirit asks.

"...No." replies Wise Fire. "I sense danger, but not deception."

A: "Onwards!" pronounces Brave Spirit.
B: "No, no, we should dismount first." says True Dancer.
C: "I'll dismount and go ahead to check what's there." suggests Wise Fire.

She can hear the same voice as before, closer. "No! Please no!"

She hurries through the gateway, taking note of a mist that thickens as she passes inside the walls. Soon, it's so dense that she can't see more than thirty feet in any direction. Not only that, it's strangely silent. And yet, a few moments later, she hears the cries again. "Get away from us!"

Wise Fire follows the noise through cracked gravestones and weathered crypts. Any script on them has become illegible. She has to pick her way through thorny briars.

The mist parts, and she can make out three figures in the centre of a low-walled enclosure. Two are children, one collapsed, one standing. The other is an armoured figure, holding an ancient sword, and wearing a black cloak. It doesn't seem to have noticed her.

"You two shall not be spared my vengeance! You have disturbed my sleep and must suffer for it!"

A: Perhaps I should just attack before anyone gets hurt.

How did I come to be here? Wait... This is another dream, isn't it?

He tries to look about him, but it's very difficult to do anything other than concentrate on the chase.

Brave Spirit shakes her head. "We shouldn't risk that."

Wise Fire suddenly turns back to the Graveyard again. "I remember... There's supposed to be a rare herb growing in there, Malavan, that strengthens the mind. If we did risk going back, it might be worth our time."

A: "Too dangerous. Let's simply leave the area before anything else happens." insists Brave Spirit.

"Let's get this done quickly!" True Dancer whispers.

Wise Fire locates the open tomb from which the Knight emerged. They stack the Knight's remains inside as carefully as they can, and replace the lid. They turn to leave, only to discover shapes shambling out of the darkness towards them. Wise Fire quickly notches and launches an arrow-

As they stagger closer, the Kai realise that these creatures are simply human corpses, rotting and broken. But some part of the Graveyard's malign inflence has infected them, raising them up from their graves, and compelling them to seek the destruction of the living.

Arrows won't help, so- Wise Fire readies her dagger.

True Dancer calms herself and makes a series of overhead blows, crushing the heads of the last zombies.

The sense of danger doesn't recede but the necropolis is quiet for the moment. The two Kai race to safety.

***

As they're hurrying out of the gateway, Wise Fire pauses.

"Wait, the Malavan!"

"Are you serious?"

With Hunting and Survival, Wise Fire automatically succeeds!

Wise Fire makes a rapid survey of the vicinity and collects a few sprigs of the herb. "All right, let's go!"

***

Brave Spirit's eyes widen as Wise Fire and True Dancer emerge from the mists, dripping blood. "What happened?"

"Move!" says True Dancer. "We'll explain later!"

***

At Pol and Loren's cottage, the Kai meet with the children's parents and explain how disaster was narrowly avoided. They're aghast, but they can see it's not the right time to rebuke them. Both children are still pale and shaking.

"We can never truly repay the debt we owe you, but we can at least offer you hospitality!" suggests the father, whose name is Tomas. "We have a pig we can roast, and you're welcome to stay the night!"

It's taken around an hour to ride there, and it's now the evening.

"Yes, certainly! But-" True Dancer eyes Tomas, taking note of his awkward stance and makeshift crutch. "Please, let me see if I can do something about your back."

"No, I can't see how to help either. Unfortunate."

Wise Fire examines the sprigs of Malavan from Graveyard, and speaks to the children's mother, Fara. "Could I please have a couple of bottles? And also, it would be useful if I could borrow your kettle, and the fire."

"...Why, certainly, what's ours is yours!"

"...Ah, I will pay you." Wise Fire thinks about the hungry-looking animals she saw as she approached. "One crown for each bottle, and one crown for the use of the kettle and the fire."

***

As Wise Fire steeps the herbs in boiling water, and Tomas and Fara prepare the pig for consumption, True Dancer meditates and heals her wounds. Brave Spirit does her best to comfort the children, who seem to be gradually recovering.

(True Dancer regains 5 END!)

Wise Fire finishes brewing the Malavan Tea, pours it into the two bottles, and stows them in her backpack. They dine on roast pig, and True Dancer does what she can to tend to Wise Fire's wounds.

After a good night's sleep, True Dancer makes another attempt at restoring Wise Fire's health.

(Wise Fire regains 7 END!)

***

The three Kai set out at dawn, and the remainder of their journey is uneventful. The Sun shines down on them, and the Graveyard starts to seem like a distant memory. They've never visited Searshelf before. When they reach it, it turns out to be a combination of garrison town and trading post. The people are a mixture of farmers, merchants and soldiers. As the Kai pass through the gate in the palisade wall, they eagerly throng around, anxious to get a look at them.

True Dancer looks around. "Does anyone here know where to find Lieutenant Perle?"

One of the soldiers nods. "Perle, eh? He's a good officer. But he's not stationed here. He's up at Fort Durnspa, that's where you'll find him."

"Fort Durnspa?"

"Yes, it's just a short journey from here. But you should wait for the Mayor, he'll certainly want a word with you."

"Perle said that he and his men were in trouble, any idea what that might mean?" True Dancer asks.

"About Fort Durnspa?" asks Brave Spirit.

"Ah... no. I am the Mayor, Treynor. We have recently been troubled by a family of ruffians, and I would request your help in dealing with the trouble they have brought to us."

"...One moment."

The Kai move away and confer.

A: "Perhaps we should proceed to Durnspa, and return here later." suggests Brave Spirit. "A report of undead is very concerning."
B: "No, I think we would listen to him now." replies True Dancer. "He's asking for our help!"

They return to the mayor. "I'm sorry-" begins Brave Spirit. "-but we're concerned enough with the reports from Fort Durnspa that we feel we should make an investigation of that vicinity our top priority."

The mayor looks as if he's about to respond, but then shuts his mouth and walks away.

"We will return as soon as we can!" True Dancer calls after him.

***

The Kai resume their ride, passing an ancient signpost with illegible, faded writing on it. They continue across a stone bridge over a river, and proceed down a road until they reach another signpost.

"So, that way leads to Fort Durnspa, and the other way leads to Tower Zil. What's Tower Zil?" says True Dancer.

"I don't recall." replies Brave Spirit. "I don't think we were told anything about it in our lessons. It can't be important."

"That doesn't follow." objects Wise Fire.

True Dancer nods. "This country is a big place!"

Brave Spirit looks at them both, but remains silent.

***

They reach the fort. As they ride up the gates, a sentry catchs sight of them, but remains silent and motionless until they've closed the distance.

"Who-" he takes note of their green cloaks and pauses. "Are you members of the Kai order?"

"Quite correct." answers Brave Spirit. "We're here concerning reports of 'the dead rising'. Please allow us to enter."

The sentry nods and calls for the gates to be opened.

***

They enter into the fort's courtyard. It's very busy, with foot soldiers going back and forth and practicing manoeuvres. Some of them approach the Kai and take the reins of their horses as they dismount. The sergeant in charge introduces himself.

"I am Sergeant Kole. Please state your business here."

"We received a request for help, from one Lieutenant Perle. And in addition, we hear that the dead are rising." states Brave Spirit.

Kole sighs. "I see. You'll be wanting to see the Lieutenant then. Come this way."

This doesn't look very interesting... Ah, wait, what's this? Eighteen soldiers dead at the Malis Mound? Enemy unknown? And another thing, this parchment looks as if it's the same as that letter we've got from Perle-

"Stop that." demands Brave Spirit.

True Dancer gives her a look of annoyance, but tidies the papers and steps away from the desk. A moment later, the door opens and a military man walks in. He regards them briefly, and then turns to Sergeant Kole behind him. "Bring refreshments for our guests." Kole salutes and leaves.

"I am Lieutenant Perle, and I am most pleased to see you. I didn't expect representatives of the Kai Order to answer my plea. Ol' Jordun is better connected than I imagined. It’s as if the gods themselves have answered my prayers. You have no idea what your coming here means to me and my men. But you’ll appreciate it soon enough, I fear. I should tell you that the fort’s commanding officer, Captain Meron, is not aware that I sent a letter to Corporal Jordun requesting help. He’ll not be best pleased when he finds out about it."

He sits down at the desk and drums his fingers on its surface.

"The Captain is a traditional officer. If I'd left it to him, he'd have us struggle here till we're all dead. I'm not proud of what I did, but there wasn't any other way."

"But what is going on?" asks True Dancer. "What's happening at Malis Mound?"

"At Malis Mound? We don't know, we haven't been able to close in to investigate. A patrol spotted signs of activity there three weeks ago, but they were repulsed when they tried to move in. The enemy force was made of Giaks and Doomwolves. Fighting them, five men died, and seven were wounded. After the survivors made their report, Captain Meron sent a larger patrol, with a similar result. And this kept on happening. And now the men are ready to break. We've already had some deserters."

"Giaks and Doomwolves, this far east?" Wise Fire asks.

"Yes, but that's not uncommon. We're used to dealing with raiding parties. Whatever's happening here, it's much worse. The Giaks have some type of magic that they're invoking with amulets, and there have been sightings of undead. And there was one report that stated a Vordak was present at the mound."

He drums his fingers again. "I think I'm going to have to take you to see Captain Meron. He'll be angry enough when he learns about what I've done, the longer you're here without his knowledge, the worse it will be."

A: "Perhaps we can solve this problem if we assume command ourselves." suggests Brave Spirit.
B: "I don't believe we have the power to do that." objects Wise Fire. "Let's slip away and go directly to the mound. That should prevent any trouble."
C: "No, if we simply talk to the Captain, we can sort all of this out." insists True Dancer.

Brave Spirit nods. "Yes, but first I need to send a letter back to the Kai Monastery. Please let me borrow some of this parchment and ink, and then perhaps Sergeant Kole could make arrangements for it to be delivered?"

She sits down at the desk, and starts to write. We've had to attend to difficulties at Fort Durnspa. Undead have been sighted in the area in addition to the usual raiding parties of Giaks and Doomwolves. The men are on the point of breaking. There may be a Vordak present. The problems are centred on Malis Mound. Preparing to investigate. Will return when the situation has been resolved.

***

Perle leads the Kai up the stairs of the fort's stone watchtower, taking them to the second floor. He knocks on a door, and a gruff voice calls out. "Come!"

Perle lifts the latch of the door and pushes it open. They follow him inside. A large table dominates the room. It is spread with maps and reports and leather-bound tomes. Standing beside the table, his eyes glued intently on one of the maps, is an army Captain in his late fifties. He has short grey hair and piercing steel-blue eyes. Despite his age, he looks exceptionally fit. Over his uniform he wears a suit of polished chainmail, and a straight-bladed sword hangs scabbarded from his belt.

"Excuse me, Captain Meron." Perle says cautiously. "May... may I please present three representatives of the Kai Order. They have come here to offer their assistance."

Meron freezes for a moment, and then looks up. He fixes Perle with a steely glare. He then looks at each Kai Lady in turn. "Kai Initiates?" he says to himself. He takes a couple of steps towards them. "To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?"

True Dancer clears her throat. "We have heard about some of the difficulties that you're facing here. In the interests of serving our mutual interests in Sommerlund and in preserving human life, we have come here to offer you our support."

Meron tightens his fists. "We need no support. We are proud soldiers of Sommerlund, and we will complete the task in front of us!"

"But surely this situation is on the edge of disaster!" objects Brave Spirit. "You can't simply wish it away!"

Meron makes a dismissive gesture. "We were taken by surprise. Now we understand the nature of the enemy, we can easily eliminate him. Sommerlund steel and courage will sweep our foes aside."

Before they can say anything else, he snaps his fingers at Perle. "Find them quarters." He glares at them again. "Tonight we shall dine together. I will not deny you the respect you deserve, but you shall have no part in this operation." He pauses. "Although I suppose I cannot stop you from investigating Malis Mound. I shall arrange matters with the guards so that you will not be stopped. Now leave, I must make my own plans."

True Dancer starts to say something, but Perle shakes his head at her sharply. She decides to stay quiet.

***

Perle leads them to their quarters, and then whispers. "I might have some additional information for you. I'll be right back. Wait here."

Their quarters are a military dormitory room. True Dancer starts checking the quality of the beds.

"Let's practice mental combat while we wait." suggests Brave Spirit. True Dancer sighs to herself, but nods and the two of them sit on the floor and stare at one another. Wise Fire lies down on one of the beds, and does her best to relax.

Half an hour later, Perle returns. "There's a deserter who may know something locked in the cells. I can't take you there, Meron may well discover me. But I can give you directions, and I've sent word on ahead. The guards trust me, they'll let you see him. But you have to do this quickly, for he is to be executed at dawn tomorrow!"

***

Following Perle's directions, the Kai arrive at the guardroom on the other side of the encampment. They're rapidly ushered through an entrance chamber, and down into the cells. One of the guards unlocks a heavy iron door, revealing a forlorn-looking man with a shaved head. "This is Private Henik. Tomorrow, he will be hanged. Be swift."

Henik stares at their green cloaks. "Kai? Kai, here?"

"Yes." replies the guard. "They may be our salvation. Tell them what you know."

"We..." he swallows. "We were sent forward to attack Malis Mound while two other squads caused a diversion. We encountered some Giaks, but they weren’t a problem. We dealt with them quickly enough. But as we closed on the Mound, we got wind of the smell of rotting flesh and heard a dreadful sound. A wailing inhuman chorus of cries and groans. Before we knew it, a mob of creatures was all over us, hacking at us with swords and clawing at our faces and throats with bony fingers. It was then I saw who the enemy were... They were the corpses of men we’d known, garrison troops who had fallen in previous fights and ambushes. They’d all been brought back to life. But they weren’t alive; they were living dead. “Worse of all, they were led by… something. It looked like a cloaked man, but beneath its red hood, it had the face of a skull with glowing crimson eyes. It screamed out orders in Giak which I don’t speak nor understand. My Ladies, I believe it was a Vordak! In the face of such an evil, our sergeant ordered us to retreat. But it was too late. There was hardly any of us left standing. I turned and ran through the trees, not daring to look back. I ran and I ran until I could no longer hear those ghastly shrieks and groans. I wandered in the forest for a day and a night before I found my way back here to Durnspa. I didn’t know it at the time, but I was the only man in my squad who got out alive. The others had perished. Every last one of them."

He shivers. "After.. after I returned, I couldn't stop thinking about it. When I heard that Captain Meron was just going to send me out again in another squad, I couldn't cope. I ran. I ran away. I just wanted to get away. But I didn't get very far. And Captain Meron says that this a war, and desertion in a war is punishable by death."

He falls silent. The Kai Ladies exchange looks.

A: "We can't abandon him!" insists True Dancer. "We have to break him out of here!"
B: Wise Fire shakes her head. "That will simply impede our mission. We should leave for Malis Mound immediately."
C: "Perhaps we can convince the guards that Henik has to be allowed to come with us." whispers Brave Spirit. "If he can be persuaded to face Malis Mound again, and become a hero, his desertion may be forgiven. We could bring him with us."

"Oh... oh, I see! Kai be praised!" The guard steps forward to shake Henik by the hand, as he looks around in confusion.

"We have to leave immediately." says Brave Spirit. "There may not be much time."

They manage to hurry Henik outside, and manage to get him to explain the route to Malis Mound. It seems that the trail is unsuitable for horses, which simplifies matters somewhat.

Wise Fire takes note of the well-trodden state of the ground. She can see that many soldiers have gone back and forth over the last few days.

Henik is still reeling with confusion, but as they walk, it gradually seems to dawn on him what's happening. He suddenly falls to his knees, covers his face, and moans.

"Kai Ladies, here? Are you our relief? That's the best news we've had all week!"

"No, we-" Brave Spirit stops, realising that they're simply joking.

"You hail from Fort Durnspa, correct?" asks True Dancer. "We've just come from there."

"Yes. Truly, do you have any word about when we can expect to be relieved?"

"Afraid not. Has anything happened recently? We've heard tales about raiders, the dead rising, and a Vordak."

The soldier shivers. "We've been lucky! For the past couple of days, we've seen no foes. But if we don't have relief soon, fatigue will be the end of us!"

"I heard the talk about the Vordak." says another. "But that can't be right, can it?"

***

Leaving them behind, the Kai continue deeper into the forest. The trail narrows. Everything seems to be closing in on them. The ground is littered with roots and rocks.

Wise Fire abruptly signals for a halt. "I've been keeping my eyes open. I've seen numerous signs of blade marks and arrow punctures on these trees. There's been fighting in this area."

Henik nods. "The raiders will be roaming the area. We should stay alert."

They proceed, and the trail starts to widen again.
