Randomly determining which of the three stays on watch: True Dancer.

True Dancer does her best to keep watch over their surroundings.

(True Dancer loses 1 END from lack of sleep.)

(Wise Fire and Brave Spirit regain 2 END.)

As the sun rises, the group complete their approach to the mound.

"Henik, is this it?" asks True Dancer.

He swallows. "Yes. We're here."

The mound rises above the surrounding trees. The wind carries the aroma of death and decomposition towards them. As they walk closer, they catch sight of bones and bloated corpses strewn around the area. True Dancer and Wise Fire both feel a strong sense of danger.

True Dancer stares uneasily at the corpses, and a thought gradually creeps into her mind. Those aren't all dead bodies!

She raises a hand to stop the others, and whispers. "This is another ambush, those are undead soldiers!"

Henik's head whips around and his eyes widen. Just as he's about to scream, Wise Fire clamps her hand over his mouth.

Brave Spirit points. "Over there, there's a tunnel leading inside. We need to get to that."

"We'll need torches." states Wise Fire. "It'll be dark inside. I can light a fire with my Fireseed."

A: "Let's just get the torches then walk around the undead." suggests True Dancer. "They're probably not smart enough to attack us unless we're close."
B: "We should dispose of them now." says Brave Spirit. "We can attack them before they can stand."
C: "If I throw my Fireseed among them that should do some damage." suggests Wise Fire. "Hopefully I can light a torch from the fire afterwards."

Wise Fire gathers some thick branches, and checks them to make sure they're not too damp. Yes, these should do for torches... She slowly moves to throwing range.

She takes aim, and hurls the Fireseed towards one of the 'bodies'. There's a sharp crack as it bursts open, and flame erupts. For a moment there's no reaction, and then three of the corpses stagger to their feet. One of them is burning fiercely. It stumbles towards the Kai, then falls over, motionless.

The other two lurch towards the group.

Wise Fire slashes at them.

The two undead collapse, truly dead once more. Wise Fire quickly lights a torch from the remains of the blaze. "Let's get moving."

***

With Henik nervously following, the Kai enter the tunnel. Brave Spirit takes a moment to examine a set of granite blocks adjacent to the entrance. They have symbols carved on them, but they mean nothing to her.

They walk deeper into the mound, through the darkness. Wise Fire's initial torch burns down, and she has to use it to light another.

At last, they arrive at the entrance to a large hall, flanked on each side by carved pillars of stone. Brave Spirit starts to examine the carvings, but True Dancer quickly steps in the way. "Don't do that! Those things are filled with noxious energy!"

Brave Spirit hesitates, then decides to keep moving.

They keep walking, and they suddenly notice more light up ahead. Oil lamps are hanging from the ceiling on chains. But light of another colour, green light, is being cast from another source. Wise Fire and True Dancer instinctively slow down and raise their weapons.

A green flame is burning inside a lantern that sits upon a dais. As they approach, a figure wearing a red robe merges from the shadows behind it, holding a staff in one hand, and a sword in the other.

“Come, then, baby Kai!” the figure says. “Let us show the Dark Lords the inherent weakness of your breed!”

Wise Fire frowns. That doesn't sound like a Vordak...

Henik makes a gasping noise, and they turn to see shapes shuffling down the tunnel towards them. More undead soldiers have arrived.

The figure lets out a peal of laughter, and a screaming noise begins to build in their heads. Brave Spirit and True Dancer recognise the nature of the psychic attack, and deflect it, but Wise Fire and Henik are thrown off-balance.

True Dancer stares at the figure. There's something important here...

C: We should attack the undead with our torches and burn them up. thinks Brave Spirit.

"Don't strike him, he's just a pawn!" calls True Dancer to the others. "This poor fool is simply a slave to a power he can't understand!"

With a sharp crack, the lantern goes out. The figure falls silent. For a moment, nothing else seems to happen, then the undead slump to the ground, dead once more. The figure lets out a long scream, and falls to his knees. He pounds the floor with his fists, then curls up, sobbing.

Cautiously, Brave Spirit walks up to him and pushes his hood back, revealing a skull-like mask. She pulls it away-

-to reveal the face of a Sommlending man. Wise Fire picks up the fallen torch and moves it closer. "Henik, do you know this man?"

Henik stands still for a moment, looking dazed. He gives himself a shake, and moves closer. "No, never seen him before."

"Well-" says Brave Spirit. "-we'll just have to bring him back for questioning."

***

As they approach Fort Durnspa a group of soldiers come out to meet them, led by Captain Meron.

Before the Kai can say anything, Meron stabs an accusing finger at them. "How dare you! I'm in charge, and yet you openly abuse my hospitality!"

"May we-" begins True Dancer.

Meron points at Henik. "That man was to have been hanged this morning! Give me one good reason that he should be breathing now!"

"He helped us!" objects True Dancer.

Reluctantly, two soldiers step foward and take hold of Henik's arms.

He sighs. "Never mind. I have at least regained my honour."

True Dancer starts to raise her mace, then thinks better of it. Can I really let this happen?

"Now." continues Meron. "I want a full report. And after that, you're going to the cells."

Brave Spirit hesitates. "All right. But please listen to everything that we have to say before taking action against either us or our friend there."

***

After hearing that the threat is at an end, Meron calms, and agree to let them walk free. "But Henik must die. I have already passed judgement on him, and the sentence is final. By rights I should consider you criminals for delaying his execution and giving him a chance to escape, but under the circumstances I'll let the matter rest."

"But no, you can't-" starts True Dancer.

Brave Spirit put a hand on her arm, and shakes her head.

As they walk into the fort, Brave Spirit whispers to True Dancer. "We can't save him. We've done what we can, but this is the end."

***

After Henik's execution, Meron sends some men to check the area, and invites the Kai to dine with him. After they decline, he offers them the use of the fort's supplies, and they refill their quivers with arrows.

After a failed attempt at getting some answers from the unknown man, he's sent down to the cells.

(Now, Bold Oak isn't going to be meeting up with the rest of the party any time soon, so I'm going to introduce another character at this point. Who should they be?)
