before the advent of deliveroo, ubereats etc dominos filled the niche of "i just got back from a night out at 4 in the morning and im suddenly hungry as gently caress for some greasy garbage i dont care how much it costs" and honestly it might still fill that niche, i wouldnt know

People then feel like they're getting a good deal despite Domino's still making an insane markup. Historically we didn't have much of a delivery network either which differentiated Domino's, but that's less of a deal now even in more rural places.

yeah, no one ever pays full price for Dominos/Pizza hut/Papa Johns etc. etc. And also, I love me a good pizza, but sometimes I just have a taste for specifically a Pizza Hut Supreme. I don't know why or where it comes from. But like 2-3 times a year I just have a taste for that specific garbage rear end pizza.

The New York style pizzas that Dominos/Pizza Hut/their clones make bad versions of are popular because they're a gently caress load of cheese with salted meats and that's exactly what you want sometimes. The people who wank themselves silly over proper authentic pizza are mostly just eating a load of bread with a tea spoon of tomato sauce and half a slice of parma ham and feeling smug about it. Sometimes also adorned with hedge trimmings that no one asked for.

For a long time I was of the opinion that even "bad" pizza is still pizza and while it's not some wood fired pizza from Naples, it's still fine. I go to someone's house to watch a game and they've got a stack of Little Caesars (insert Domino's, PH, whatever) cause it's $5/pie? Cool, still dece. Then I had my mind changed by the worst Domino's pizza I've ever had (in Moorhead, Minnesota, if you recognize the name, it's where Bunny Lebowski ran away from to be a porn star), like I took 2 bites and tapped out. To this day I can't fathom loving up a pizza that bad.
