Almost all of the huge deals in recent years are for younger guys that play premium infield positions. Trout, Betts and Harper are the only OF contracts you can compare and even then all of those guys were younger with a better health record at the time. I think the Yankees offer puts him somewhere in between Trout and Betts, closer to Betts, and that seems more than fair

Johnny Bravo

Yeah I don't think that's gonna happen. Maybe if he was 2 or 3 years younger and I feel like even that is a big maybe

Phillips walk off happened when that kid was like 5 or 6 and he's an incredible goofball, why wouldn't that be a 7 year olds favorite player?

And if we're being honest, he's likely not going to be expensive to keep around so there's not much worry over Tampa unloading him

They had a shortened spring training due to the lockout, so his pitch count isn't built up. How many pitches do you really want him throwing in his first start of the season after he couldn't even pitch in the playoffs because of an elbow injury

Yea, it'd be really lovely to see Kershaw's elbow explode over a perfect game. It's not like he really needs one to cement his legacy and if he does, he practically threw one already in 2014

Perfect through 7 is awesome as hell though, kinda like Bumgarner's no hitter except better

I mean what the gently caress is the point of competing at all if you’re this risk averse?

The idea that accomplishments like perfect games don’t mean anything is as soulless as the commissioner calling the World Series trophy a hunk of metal. I’m not here to watch Andrew Friedman win at game theory.

I guess we'll just have to disagree then. He's coming off a season ending elbow injury that also cost him 2 months earlier in 2021, PRP injections, a short spring training and it's the first week of the season. I think there's a reasonable level of risk there if his goal is to stay healthy for the next 6 months. This is all moot anyways since Kershaw himself thought it was the right move so who the gently caress cares, it's his body

Yup. They were the best team in the division at the start of Trout's career, tore it down and finished last for a few years and were back to a 97 win team by 2018.

I dunno that I agree with the call based on intent but I do think it was heads up baseball by the A's there and you're taught since little league to turn into foul territory for that reason

Even the first base coach is pointing at the bag, presumably telling him to get back on it

Chuckling at all the pre-season regression projections for Trout. Everyone saw Pujols/Miggy decline in their 30s and applied the standard model to the greatest right handed hitter to ever live. Pujols/Miggy have 4 seasons combined, out of 42, that outclass Trout's average season. Unless he gets injured, Trout is putting up a 200+ OPS+ this year.

And he's rocking a sprint speed of 29.6 ft/sec at 30 after missing a year with a calf injury that he initially thought was an Achilles. He could still swipe 30-40+ bags a year if he wanted to.

I swear we saw a combined homer a couple years back. Batter hits it out but it’s initially ruled a double. The now-runner is pulled for a pinch runner, then the play is reviewed. The hit is ruled a home run but since the switch was already made, the pinch runner completes the run.

Am I horribly misremembering this?

Not sure but I'm intrigued by the possibility. I remember many years ago when Gabe Kapler was on base when a home run was hit and he ruptured his achilles rounding second base. He had to be subbed out and the pinch runner started at second to finish the home run trot

I was surprised the other day to see how young Jo Adell still was

His bat has been fine this year other than the first week slump. He's completely lost in the outfield though, his first step is legitimately the worst I think I've ever seen.

The unfortunate thing for Adell is that Marsh has been pretty good this year and looks considerably more comfortable on defense and the other two OF spots are locked down with Mike Trout putting up Taylor Ward type numbers this year

I would like to address my actions on May 4th involving Madison Bumgarner. When I began my MLB career almost 15 years ago, I received some good advice. I was told to umpire every game as if my children were sitting in the front row. I fell short of those expectations this week. While I can’t go back and change what happened, I take full accountability. I will learn from this incident, and I sincerely apologize.
