I'll post this in the NPB thread too if it exists, but Roki Sasaki of the Lotte Marines just threw a perfect game against the Orix Buffaloes. He did it on 105 pitches while striking out 19, striking out 13 in a row at one point. Just a wild perfomance.

edit: didn't find an NPB thread
Watched this last night concurrently with seeing my long-time favorite insomnia baseball watch, the Hanshin Tigers, fall to 1-12.

That performance was absolutely bananas. It was like the "Kerry Wood Game" from 1998 but turned into a Perfect Game. The limit on posting fees is the dumbest thing NPB has done in recent times because that guy would fetch the Marines so much money if he went to MLB auction.

No active NPB thread from what I can tell, so it'll probably interest some of you in here to know that Roki Sasaki is currently following up his perfect game from earlier this week by going perfect with 9 K's through six innings, on about 75 pitches, against the Nippon Ham Fighters. He's hitting 100 MPH with his fastball in this game too.

Unless, for some reason, you already pay for the Pacific League TV streaming package, you'll have to search around for unofficial streaming links that I can't post here if you're interested in watching some late-night baseball.

EDIT: Perfect through 7 innings now - 11 strikeouts.

EDIT 2: Now perfect through 8 - 14 strikeouts on 105 pitches. One problem: it's a 0-0 game and the opposing starter has only allowed 4 hits himself.

Sasaki ends up pulled after 8 perfect innings with the game tied 0-0. Wow.

e: I am not finding a good place to look this up. Can you tell us what he throws? We know he has a FB that can hit 100 and since it’s NPB I assume also a splitter?
Watching him tonight and earlier in the week, it looked like he almost exclusively threw his 100-mph fastball and either a splitter or a forkball. Supposedly he has other pitches. I don't really have intimate knowledge of Japanese Baseball. I'd been following it casually since about 1998 as an early teenager but after pregnancy issues and then newborn health complications led to me basically being an on-call husband and then father for good chunks of 2020 and 2021 I ended up watching live NPB in the wee hours of the morning 4-5 times a week, so I'm seeing way more of it than I used to.

According to r/NPB, the likely reason why he was pulled after the 8th is that the staff of the Chiba Lotte Marines have an extensively-detailed plan in place for how to develop Sasaki, which includes strict pitch limits like leaving the inning after he hits 100 pitches, in order to avoid overuse of his arm early in his career. Another reason is that Japan has the same rules as Major League Baseball regarding no-hitters and perfect games, so even if Sasaki had stayed in and pitched a perfect 9th it still wouldn't have counted as a Perfect Game because the Marines offense was worthless and it went to the 10th. I'd wager that if the Marines had a healthy lead Sasaki may have been given a chance to pitch the 9th since there wouldn't have been as much pressure in a win/loss sense.

From what I've read, there's been a massive shift in the way pitchers are dealt with in Japan over the last ten years or so, with arm usage much more carefully watched than it used to be. This includes pitch limits at the high school level now, so the days of teenagers throwing 200+ pitches at the annual Koshien tournament on consecutive days in order to show how committed they are have come to an end.

This says more about baseball teams aversion to any colors other than red and blue than it does about the Sox but those uniforms are honestly unique.
Of course this probably also says a lot about how utterly boring Jerry Reinsdorf is, because the Chicago Bulls haven't changed their basic look since sometime around the 1987 season when they modified their primary away jerseys from having a script Chicago on the front to a block "BULLS".

Roki Sasaki pitching in Japan tonight. This is the first time he's really struggled with his command. Allowed multiple runners in the first inning and will probably exit after five with a pair of runs allowed on six hits and three walks and 4/5 K's. He loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th but got out of it only allowing a run.

The thing with him only really having two pitches right now is that if the other team just focuses on contact and figures out how to time a pitcher who can throw 100 mph, he's hittable. Also of note: he inadvertently plunked a guy in the ribs with a 98-mph fastball and man do I feel sorry for him.

Not MLB but since there's no NPB thread and I just finished watching it...

There was just a extra-inning game in which a grand total of two pitchers were used: the Hanshin Tigers @ the Chunichi Dragons

Chunichi Dragons starting pitcher Yudai Ohno threw 108 pitches over the first nine innings, allowing no baserunners and striking out five for what should have been a perfect game. However, Hanshin pitcher Koyo Ayoagi himself had allowed two hits and one walk with six K's on 101 pitches, and the game went to the 10th inning scoreless.

Both managers allowed their pitchers to come back out - Chunichi's to see if Ohno could still be perfect and Hanshin's because if one Chunichi hitter hadn't had a 10-11 pitch at bat Ayoagi would've easily been under 100 pitches and was cruising. Ohno started the 10th with two quick outs, but unfortunately allowed a double before retiring the next hitter to finish with ten one-hit, one-baserunner innings on 120 pitches. Ayoagi quickly retired the first hitter in the tenth, but allowed a single, intentional walk, and then two more singles for a 1-0 loss in 9 1/3 innings and about 110 pitches.

I don't think I've ever seen a professional game like that. I definitely know I haven't seen an extra-inning shutout for myself since Jack Morris in the 1991 World Series.
