*Stupid Babby*

He definitely was a star, just that he never could get over the hump to win the big one until Moses Malone came in, someone who also I don't think was brought up alot this season. They better find someone for him because he beats the Lakers in 81 and 83.

I’m sure they’ll figure it out, I doubt they will pretend Moses Malone didn’t exist. It will be interesting to see how they accelerate the timeline though, there is no way they can keep doing one nba season per show season. The first season made sense, a lot of ground to cover. I am sure we’re in for some time skips.

Basketball circles and rankings still put Kobe top 5 and Shaq....not. I disagree due to Shaqs pure dominance being more important than Kobes skill, so it will be super interesting to see how this is portrayed in general if it keeps getting renewed to get that far.

I guess this isn’t the thread for it but it’s weird that shaq is somehow underrated historically. Pretty sure he’d dominate literally every other big man all time

He got named to the top 50 all time players after two years in the league! Truly insane to think of someone being that dominant so early.

I think he gets punished for not being as good as he could have been. IMO he was clearly a better player than Kobe (who was himself phenomenal), but as Kobe himself said, Shaq with Kobe's work ethic would have been on another level entirely. I think Shaq bouncing around on different teams toward the end of his career probably didn't help his legacy either, especially in combination with the out of shape and injury prone thing, which maybe took the shine off the years of dominance. On the other hand, Kobe stayed with the Lakers his whole career, and even after he was past his prime, he was still talked up constantly by a media ecosystem that loves talking about the Lakers.

Having a massive and exploitable hole in his game when it came to free throws doesn't help either, and some of the excuses about big men not being able to shoot becuase of mechanics look a bit sillier in hindsight.

yea it feels like people take 'he could have been better' as some great failing but really aside from his freethrow game being weak he was objectively easily among the best big men the game has had. He had a rougher career, especially at the end, but he was absolutely a top level guy.

Don't be scared
I finally finished the season and, overall, really enjoyed it start to finish. I think it helped that I didn't come into it with much knowledge of that era of Lakers basketball, so I could just take it for what it was most of the time. Somehow the Jerry Tarkanian thing and the rookie of the year vote were the only things I actually learned about, and I thought they were used for the right amount of impact in the story.

Whoever said, "it was great when it stopped being about Jerry Buss' dick" is not wrong. I thought the show really shined when they finally got away from the gratuitous "oh look, historical sports figures loving!" aspect of the early episodes.

I was also pleasantly surprised that this version of Jerry West ended up being one of my favorite characters in the show. His stomping around the concourse feeling like he was about to throw up or explode, not watching the game, is waaaay too relatable for me. But Adrian Brodie as Pat Riley and Quincy Isaiah as Magic also chewed up every scene they were in. They were sensational. I also really enjoyed the depiction of Kareem and how they crafted his story.

As for season 2, I feel like they set it up to really spend the season on Magic vs. Bird, which went on until 1991. From a storytelling standpoint, I don't know if they'd actually try to cover 11 years of basketball in 10 episodes, or if they pick one particular stretch of time to focus on. Because you also had the rise of the Bad Boys, Air Jordan and a bunch of other poo poo that started to eclipse what they had going on pretty quickly in the grand scheme of things. Hell, by about 1987-88, it was actually cool to like the NBA for the first time, maybe ever. Or maybe I just outlined two or three seasons here.

Either way, I'm excited for more and can't wait to see who they end up casting as the villains for the Lakers through the rest of the 80s.

It definitely made sense for this season to cover just the first year since it had that high moment of winning the championship but yeah, they can't keep going at that pace.

The first part really sucks dude and the second part is awesome. To this day all my favorite movies and scenes make me think of my father who suffered a similar fate.

Awesome to hear you’re still making new memories together.

My dad played for MSU the year before Magic came there and went crazy over that team. I can't imagine how much he would have been into this show. Enjoy your luck for the experience.

The Buss scenes still bother me in this show. Everyone gets hokey expository dialogue all the time but for some reason it feels way more egregious whenever he talks. Which is weird because Reilly is one of our finest actors.

The word that keeps coming to mind to me is "sophomorish". It feels like a 2K game's story mode or something. Luckily it's buoyed by some charming performances but man the editing and writing can be so dog poo poo.

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

I still get bothered by the filters they throw on occasionally to make it look “70s”. Many seem to be slapped on for no reason. It’s pretty distracting and I don’t know what it’s adding aside from reminding you that this happened 40 years ago.

Acting is good though, and that will keep me coming back.

Yeah exactly. The editing just gets absurd. I'm still thinking about how they cut grainy footage of two dogs loving in when magic was being a huge dickhead to his ex's new bf. "He's making him his BITCH" the show explains, while bashing me over the head with a tire iron.

I don't really get hooked on tv, but this show is great and I binged it at the weekend. Pretty much everything posters here are complaining about are reasons why I am into it. John C Reilly was probably the hook that got me watching; but really love the style, the over-the-top drama and can't think of any show with cliffhangers that got me as good as this one did.

I wish I knew about this last year when I was in the throes of hate-watching Ted Lasso. A perfect curer.

When he's doing his coach thing in front of the players, he's fine. He's supposed to come off as a weird dude sorta out of his element, but when you need some drama stuff, it's like night and day.

Yea he seems perfectly cast for a guy who is permanently insecure, and this grasping for power at every corner because he’s constantly afraid of being undermined, or worse exposed as a fraud. Kind of looking forward to Riley taking over though.

Jack nicholson showing up court side was hilarious. Looking forward to some more actors playing other actors cameos.

I liked season 1 a lot, but I feel like the complaints people had about the show character assassinating everyone are a lot worse this season, because everyone seems like a miserable rear end in a top hat except Pat Riley. Even Jeanie Buss, who felt like a source in the first season because of how positively she was portrayed compared to everyone else, is just moping around this season.

CubanMissile

Of Hulks and Spider-Men
I find it difficult to guess what’s character assassination and what’s reality when pretty much every person involved has maintained a curated image most of their lives and their fans are just as invested in protecting that image as they are.

I feel like I missed something, why is Jeanie so dead set against her father marrying that lady?

Dr Kool-AIDS
Mar 26, 2004

Paul Westhead is probably the person being treated most unfairly, because my understanding is that he was seen as a pretty nice guy, even if he really was overly stubborn about The System (which the show has been extremely bad at explaining because it doesn't actually care about basketball). I feel like he's being presented as an insecure narcissist monster so we'll sympathize with Pat Riley and Magic, but Magic's been pretty unpleasant to watch this season too, and the show's barely even making any effort to remind us that he's actually a good player. I'm fine with the show taking some liberties/don't feel a need for the show to have the Lakers' seal of approval, but turning people into cartoons while removing the fun that was way more present in the first season just makes it feel like bad melodrama. Magic learned in the first season that everyone likes him more when he smiles, and I guess I just want to hurry up and get to a part of the show where he's smiling again.

I think Jeanie's supposed to feel threatened by someone coming in and stealing her dad's attention, but I feel like it was handled way better with her brothers than with her going all Electra complex about Honey.

Darko
Dec 23, 2004

I think the show is in a weird spot in their history, where we had to deal with them losing, but not making it a huge deal because there's really no drama in it when we know they win the next year. They can't milk "they need to win" like they did in Season 1. So we are currently stuck in the period where we have to wait for them to get on top again so we get to the real back and forth between Bird and Magic and then the more interesting play with their decline to the Pistons (who ended both Showtime eras) and then Jordan taking Magic's spotlight.

The show started with him realizing he had HIV and seeing (actual) Jordan take his spot, so the show was always going to be his rise to ridiculous fame and making basketball what it is, and his fall and realizing that he would be overtaken as the greatest. It was always going to get to the 90s from inception, really.

As my post above you says, the performances are good but the show is at a really weird spot in the history where they are trying to get most drama out of the shift to Riley, which is getting good performances, but having to try a bit too hard in some characters at the moment.

It hasn't been great but that's a really weird take. It's a show about the 1980s Lakers glory days that opens with Magic announcing his HIV diagnosis in the early 90s. Why would they only make it about the 1980 season?
