yeah it is.

check out this video from a guy who built a 3d printed copy of the actuators that move the JWST's mirrors. using a single stepper motor and some incredibly clever and cool engineering, it can drive its segment of the mirror back and forth a couple of inches with 8 nanometer precision.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5MxH1sfJLBQ

the zero-backlash flexure that achieves the final precision totally geometrically, like an old fashioned reducing pantograph, is just so drat cool.

idk if that’s the same video I watched but I saw one where they replicated the mechanism and it’s totally ingenious to be able to incorporate course and fine adjustment from a single axis of drive like that

layers are a bit bogus imo. they work obv but are a bit cumbersome. they’re a relic of the past and we should move past them. everyone else has adobe why can’t you

thats an incredibly dumb take unless you have a suggestion for a replacement for the layer paradigm. im all ears.

nodes

converging all layers and edits into a single stack obfuscates the order of execution once you get past a basic level of complexity

as soon as I started using nodes for images it became clear that it’s a superior method

they take a moment to understand but then they present the work in such an intuitive way

except it does take up more screen space

Sagebrush posted:

why not both?

absolutely. in some ways they’re functionally identical so you could in theory have both operational at the same time

i still dont know what a node is

I first came across it in blender but stuff like davinci resolve also does it

when you start having a situation where you have (for example) two layers that both have masks and then you’re trying to blend those layers together, the layers module in photoshop starts to be become unclear. the order of operations is not obvious

nodes fixes all of this in an easy obvious way. they’re only really necessary once you get a certain level of complexity but once you do they make it so easy and obvious

one day they’ll latch on. everyone else is

miatas are neat. i mentioned this in muskchat but small cars that are fun as hell to drive are the best

i took a GR 86 on a test spin and it's too good for the price. too bad i don't need a car

I read some people commenting on this and other things and the small takeaway was that it’s far better to have a car that feels fast even when you’re going slow than a big car that feels slow when it’s going fast

I would love to drive a miata one day. I used to idolise the older body mr2 as dream car to get one day but I think it’s now a miati/mx5

Sagebrush posted:

nodes are definitely the way of the future.

never mind blueprints in unreal engine which is legit object oriented programming but with nodes.

nodes like in blender are like scripting but in unreal engine is true oop (as in they get compiled and executed)

if you want the sensation of speed, sure.

the fastest-feeling car i have ever been in was an MG midget on I-90 and i never want to do that again.

these days i'm not really into fast cars though. i still think it would be cool to have an NSX, sure, but i'm like where would i keep it? and it's not the sort of thing you use to pop down to the grocery store. meh. if i want a thrilling vehicle i have a fast motorcycle and i can go fly a plane. i just want my car to have comfortable seats and a good heater

it’s a romanticised idea in my mind for sure but would love a small car like that for weekend getaways with lady

lol listen to me

I once made a cassette that had the song “rock n roll” from that album, only had that song, on repeat, on both sides, so you could listen to nothing but that song

I used to have a set of moves I’d do with that song. like a dance but not.
