What a horrible thread to have a post.
I'm not trying to yuck anyone's yum but preview audiences are self-selecting, wait until the general release.

There’s definitely a lot of truth to that but the Indiewire guy isn’t some Avatar fanboy. If the movie sucked he wouldn’t have held back.

The primetime 6:30 showings at my local AMC Laser IMAX are currently at 95% capacity for the first 7 days. I will be saluting Mrs. Kidman with a mouth full of mushrooms, I intend to see God.

A fair number of critics were part of those preview audiences too so regardless of their Avatar feelings they were there to cover the last big movie of the year. Those are the impressions that matter more to me and they've been generally quite positive.

Avatar, The Abyss, and Aliens are my favorite James Cameron movies (in no particular order). I do love me some Titanic every now and then though.

I never saw The Abyss as a kid, I think it was mainly that in the video stores it just kind of got lost with Deep Star Six, Leviathan, and stuff and I never paid it any attention (and was too young to really know like directors and stuff).

Also people were so pissed about the ending to The Abyss and I never understood that

It's-a me, motherfucker

Jim is operating on such a high level that he's already hyping 3 and 4.

quote:

“I can’t tell you the details, but all I can say is that when I turned in the script for 2, the studio gave me three pages of notes. And when I turned in the script for 3, they gave me a page of notes, so I was getting better. When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, creative executive over the films wrote me an email that said, ‘Holy gently caress.’ And I said, ‘Well, where are the notes?’ And she said, ‘Those are the notes.’ Because it kind of goes nuts in a good way, right?”

Cameron also said of Avatar 4 that “you think you know what it’s about, and then, oh no, you don’t,” and that “I hope I get to make that film, is what I’m saying.”

Not London specifically but out of the Cineworld IMAXs I checked, only the Birmingham NEC explicitly lists HFR. Odeon's website doesn't give any information either way but I believe their Dolby screens are the most likely bet. I did get in touch with Vue and the Manchester Printworks aren't showing it in HFR either - and apparently the large IMAXs might even be showing it window boxed??

Preview tweets and impressions are always by the cadre who don't want to lose their access in the future to previews and are almost always glowing, so I don't think they can be overly trusted themselves.

That said, it sure is feeling like Cameron pulled another James Cameron sequel. I swear if he directed Titanic 2 it would have made $10b and won 22 oscars.

Even awful movies generally have glowing premiere reactions, for exactly the reasons Tom Guycot said.

I mean, I'm sure the movie is gonna rule and I already have my nighttime premiere tickets (I live in Seoul so I get to see it before any other countries on the biggest IMAX screen in the world, woo!), but the premiere tweets would read like this no matter what.

God after 13 years endlessly defending this movie from film nerds and legitmately doing weeks of research and box office analysis as blockbusters came and went since 2009 to continually demonstrate Avatar 2 will make gangbusters again....if these early reviews end up being the general reception Im gunna wallow in a glorious I loving TOLD YOU SO till the end of time.

Im gunna have to dig out one of my old long long posts about this from over the years.

The perfect Jim Cameron movie:

A bathyscaphe piloted and built by Jim Cameron irl descends to the wreck of Titanic. They find the body of Jack, perfectly preserved by the cold. "His brain is virtually intact... We can revive him, we have the technology" -smash cut, it turns out we are 100 years in the future and Jack is being transferred to the prototype Avatar body, as the first ever human to undergo the procedure. Smash cut, Na'vi Jack is doing his famous king of the world pose with Na'vi Sigourney Weaver on the deck of a military spaceship hovering over Pandora.

You might be thinking of Gladiator 2 where Maximus is revived and made immortal by the gods and fights wars throughout history and it ends with him in the Pentagon in the modern day.

Soon.

just watched this part of Avatar for the first time in years, when the big final battle begins.

so many epic moments in just four minutes. great shot composition and attention to detail - from the reflections on the visors of the soldiers' helmets in the jungle to the hazy backdrop with the horse-like animals charging. I say this as someone harsh on blockbusters (Cameron does it right)

Yup.

https://www.grunge.com/793514/how-james-cameron-saved-guillermo-del-toros-father-from-kidnappers/

They became friends at a 4th of July party around the time of Cronos and Guillermo was broke as all hell from dumping his money into Cronos and Mimic.

His dad got kidnapped and he couldnt afford the $1m ransom. Cameron took him to a bank, got the $1m and hired a negotiator and got his dad back. Del Torro and his family fled Mexico as a result.

Hands down my favorite "did you know?" story about any filmmaker.

Apparently legacy IMAX 3D (digital/xenon) can project HFR. It's only the dual laser systems that can't. You have to confirm with your theater though I think.

[edit] But yes, the Dolby Cinema 3D picture will be a lot better, and according to this spread sheet, every AMC Dolby Cinema in IL is 1.85 AR, so they should project the full frame image (or close to it I guess) similar to IMAX.
