I like Vim because I enjoy tinkering endlessly with my poo poo, in pretty much every aspect of my life. The navigation feels great once you get used to it too, and I can have like 6 files onscreen at once without issues.

Eh, it's not all bad. You learn to appreciate the little things, plus financial security in and of itself does solve a whole fuckload of other stressors you could be having. Having a team you get along with is a big help as well, makes it feel like less of a grind. I just know this is basically the only thing that I can do that I won't actively hate, and I actually enjoy the challenges and puzzles most of the time. I'm still pretty young though, so I'm just hoping that the spark stays with me as long as possible.

Yeah doing what you love for a living requires a lot of compartmentalization to avoid growing to loving despise it over time. Haven't even put in an hour on the game I've been making since I started this gig, need to make some time to get back into that. This is pretty much the only thing Ive ever wanted to do since I was a kid though, so I try to make it work. Definitely have wrestled with spells of burnout though, although every time it's been other things in my life being hosed up that just manifested itself as professional burnout. I think I was like, 3 or 4 playing a video game and someone explained to me that it all worked because of lines of instructions someone wrote and the idea that you could make something like that just struck me as the most amazing thing I'd ever heard. Sorry, didn't mean to get sentimental. Just, love me some computer still. Don't get me wrong, I'm jaded about aspects of the business, but when it's good it still gives me a really amazing sense of satisfaction to do this. Really glad to be working a gig where I can take pride in my work again. And yeah, that's why I don't work in games. It's going to be a hell gig until developers unionize which lol

I'm digging this gig for being cool with going the other way, I start at like 10 and work till 6 or 7. My brain doesn't fully start firing until the afternoon anyways and the extra sleep in the morning helps a ton. Can't seem to fall asleep for poo poo until after around midnight regardless of what I do for my sleep hygiene so it works. I think my ideal would be doing remote for a west coast place and working like noon-8 local time to be honest.

I pretty much only work OT if it's something where I'm in the zone on a problem and I know it's going to be a pain in the rear end to get back in the groove tomorrow if I stop at the point I'm at. Or if I'm avoiding something in my personal life but that's a whole other issue. Probably doesn't hurt if my managers notice I'm online later than my coworkers anyhow. Seems to be a good culture about respecting people's work life balance which kicks rear end. I also find it's a lot easier to end up working a bit later when you don't have a 45 minute drive ahead of you that's weighing on your mind. gently caress I'm glad I'm not commuting anymore.

Semi related question, how the hell do you meet people as an adult? I've got a decent friend group with my high school buddies, but they are all hundreds of miles away which imposes some limitations. Recovered alcoholic, so bars aren't the best idea, but that seems to be where most adults meet each other from what I've seen.

Anxiety over taking a couple days off and taking a trip out of town got me up at 2AM replicating my dev environment onto an old laptop so I can work on my trip if I need to. Worst case I've got a remote desktop solution set up and tested. I'm starting to think maybe I need to relax a bit.

NIN is definitely on the list, next though is probably Avatar which should be killer, and I think MCR in August, partner adores them and I like them a decent bit but I'm curious how they'll be live.
