Regarding anyone that still thinks the Garlean Empire has the right of it (especially after Endwalker), I'll just refer to my favorite quote from the FATAL & Friends, regarding some of RIFTS' later supplements: "There comes a point where it stops mattering whether this is a dog whistle or you're just that stupid."

I liked this duty because it got me to start imagining my WoL as more than just a projection of me, the player. And that first starting reaction was something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8C4lK41SX-Q

Sometimes in order to tell a good story, you got to do the Job. But I guess for some folks that just doesn't work for them.....brother.

For me at least, the WoL deciding to head to a completely different area (but still tangentially served the overall goal) made sense as going back to basics after losing so soundly to Zenos. A place has a big monster that you can't face? Go somewhere else and get stronger until you can. Now that I look back on it, having Lyse join you on your journey feels arbitrary and could have used some more development (if not a rewrite).

Also, for some reason I thought those sidequests opened up before the attack on Reach.

I feel like asking why an MMO character isn't traumatized by the violence is like asking why any Musou-game character isn't traumatized by the violence. This isn't a genre that's designed to tell that sort of story unless it's built from the ground-up for that purpose, and expecting it to does NOT make it a failing of the storytelling when it doesn't. You cannot possibly argue in good faith that a game failing to tackle a subject it's not designed for and not intended for is some sort of fundamental flaw.

I remember when I did that part of the Binding Coils that I thought Urianger's theory that Nael was resurrected in the image of the last person they held in their mind at death was kind of nice. The White Raven of Garlemald came across as a real dyed in the wool psycho from the few references in the dialogue I got to their deeds in original ff14 and how they acted in their antagonist role in the Raid Series, and the idea that as they perished their mind cast back to some person they truly loved, even if we didn't know who that was (I recall I speculated it must be one of his mother, sister or partner) was a nice bit of humanization for such a pure Freiza-like villain.

I'm honestly a little sad that the game never took the opportunity in-universe to reveal the equally charming truth about how the real Nael died long ago and his sister took up his name and armor like she was Imperialism Batman, that's always a fun little trope.

Isn't Imperialsm Batman just Batman? (:v: :nolan: :v:)

Awesome conclusion to 4.0 The Royal Menagerie was pretty surprising in terms of difficulty. The only thing comparable in the MSQ previously was Nidhogg.

As for Zenos, while I personally love the character, my WoL's feelings are more complicated (mainly because I find that conflict itself interesting). My interpretation of her (and even how she would have responded in cutscenes) has been fluid, but denying Zenos has always been the right decision for her. I think it comes down to her saying "yeah, I enjoy what I do...but seeing you hedonistically wallow and glorify in one aspect of that at the expense of everything else, then have the gall to say we are the same is pretty drat off-putting." But if someone close to her was to ask the same question, she'd begrudgingly admit that she empathized to some degree.

Edit: also! The Old One is a bit of Japanese history, weirdly enough for showing up here. Its design is based on the dogu, clay figures made all across Japan exclusively during the Jomon period. They come in some different variations, but the most common design is what The Old One is based on:

Their unknown purpose and widespread-yet-restricted creation have been a source of inspiration in tons of Japanese media. Most agree that they were likely used to contain illnesses or curses from people, and by destroying the dogu, the malady would be cleared. The design of the goggle-eyed types makes them popular in alien conspiracies, as if they're representing men in space suits.

For some reason I'm reminded of that statue set that Picard was geeking out about in that one TNG episode (no I don't remember the name)
