GPTribefan posted:There’s actually a weird story behind this. There was a collector online that was buying up literally every copy of the 2000 bowman’s best Rick Asadoorian he could in an effort to corner the market and drive up the price. I think at one point he ended up owning close to 25% of the print run - the second that one popped up on eBay or for sale on a newsgroup/message board, he pounced. The card listed for well over $100 in Beckett for a long time despite Asadoorian being at best a low-level prospect - it was all based on one collector buying the card. The guy ended up being a complete bust and that card may be worth a few bucks at best these days. But for a few glorious years, it was the most expensive card you could hope to pull from the product. There was a guy who did this with a random Pinnacle football autograph from 1997 or 1998 too.

Chief McHeath posted:That’s what eBay vault is? I’ve seen ads but just guessed it was some sort of additional layer of authentication by eBay for high value cards maybe with secure storage or something. That "additional layer of authentication" is its own scam that eBay is running, separately.

GentlemanofLeisure posted:Thanks! I have a ton of questions, but I'm answering them by reading and lurking a couple other spots. One I can ask though is this: is there a resource that will show you photos of all of "x" cards? Where "x" might be a player's name, or a certain set? Like if I wanted to find photos of all the different Chipper Jones cards, or if I want to see photos of all the cards from Topps Stadium Club 2022? Or is that something that isn't really done due to the volume of cards released? I want to find cards of players I like with images of them hitting the ball like this Yordan. The best I've found out to do so far is run a search on somewhere like cardboardconnection then cross reference it to either ebay or comc. COMC would be best.

Shrecknet posted:What are the thread's thoughts on sticker autos vs on-card? Personally I loathe sticker autos, it completely negates any sense of rarity since you know he just signed a billion stickers and mailed it back. I know the exact same thing is true of cards but it's different knowing they actually touched it. From what I see in hockey, the sticker autos have a sensible niche: cards can't be made until a rookie has actually played in a game, so rookie cards progress through the season from regular cards, to sticker autos, to on-card autos, to the high-end rookie auto patches and things like that. Of course, because Panini/Topps pushed Upper Deck out of the market for supplies during the pandemic, the on-card autos for 2021-22 NHL rookies are just now coming out, but that's a different issue.
