![]() I'm just getting started and Idk whats going on TL;DR
What is Genshin Impact? https://genshin.mihoyo.com/en Genshin Impact is a free to play open world exploration game with gacha mechanics. It’s currently available on mobile, PC, and PS4/5. The exploration gameplay is simple yet surprisingly engaging and combat consists of swapping between characters to pull off combos. This game has a star studded VA team in multiple languages, top notch worldbuilding, fun character writing, and a pretty decent story to boot. The story is not winning any literary prizes, but it's fun and dumb and has anime af fights. Singleplayer? Multiplayer? MMO?! This is primarily a single player game. Multiplayer exists but it is limited to primarily instanced dungeons or bosses. Is it free or is it "free"? Genshin Impact is often described as two games. One game is an expansive open world exploration live service rpg with a gigantic regularly expanding map, quests, dungeons, and events. The second game is the Spiral Abyss and Imaginarium theater, difficult endgame dungeons with tight dps and roster requirements. For the "first game", you absolutely do not need to spend any money at all to have a good time. This is not like other gacha games where that statement is technically true but realistically time consuming and annoying. It's possible to work your way up to a reasonably diverse character roster over time using only currency you acquire ingame. You can expect to get an average of 55 free rolls per 6 week patch cycle if you do all the dailies/events/etc, not including currency from exploration or quests. For the "second game", this becomes blurrier. Both modes reward having the latest shiniest character, spiral abyss rewards investing heavily into two teams while imaginarium theater rewards investing moderately into a wide number of characters. It is possible and actually very common for fully f2p accounts to completely clear these endgame dungeons, the issue is that many of these accounts are old and have had a long time to stock up on characters and gear. Spending money does speed up how long it'll take for an account to reach the point of fully clearing and makes it easier for older accounts to clear the latest version, but that doesn't mean you can just buy your way into it either. Leveling, gearing, and straight up learning how to build teams and play them needs time, whether you've spent 0$ or 10000$. For whatever it's worth, the rewards are 11 rolls per 6 week patch cycle from spiral abyss and 5 rolls per month from imaginarium theater. One thing to keep in mind, if you have your heart set on a specific character expect to plan in advance. This game has several bad luck protection systems that makes getting a specific character determinate with preparation. This game heavily punishes impatience and FOMO, so if you feel that you may be susceptible it might be better to stay away. Check the second post for more details on how to plan. What should I play it on? PC and mobile accounts are natively cross-compatible, and PSN accounts can now be linked with some finagling. Instructions are here. Game is also available on cloud gaming services. How to play with goons Goon discord is here! https://discord.gg/Dxbk6ZTB2X ![]() ![]() This is for security reasons, especially since there was an exploit that allows people to change your account email with no warning. You can do this by logging into the main website and going to account settings https://genshin.mihoyo.com/en/home ![]() How to build a Character There are four main areas for improving your character ![]() Character levels - Pretty straight forward, level up your character using xp books! Kills give you a minuscule amount of xp, so don't bother relying on it for levels Ascension level - This determines the max level of the character. Unlocking each ascension additionally adds some bonus stats and at ascension 4 you unlock the bonus talent. This is why you sometimes see people talk about characters being 60/60 or 60/70, there is a small difference! Also, you get a free roll every odd ascension, don't forget to pick that up. At the early levels, feel free to try out different characters and don't stress too much about possibly bricking your account. Later on, getting a character to 60/70 is extremely trivial, so if you want a safe stopping point that's a good one! ![]() Weapon levels - Level up your weapons using other weapons and magic crystals obtained from mining/forging and events. Each weapon has a bonus stat associated with it which will also increase as you level the weapon. Weapon ascension - Like character ascensions, this determines the max level of your weapon. Increasing the ascension level also gives a fairly sizeable boost to the bonus stat. Similar to character levels, getting a weapon up to 60/70 is pretty easy in the late game. ![]() The talent screen isn't just for telling you what a character's skills do, it's also where you level them up! The max talent level goes up as you ascend the character and they are for improving the raw numbers of your skills and normal attack. If you're not sure what a character is good at or what talent to level up first, there is a talent reference button in the leveling up screen that shows a recommended order. These recommendations are crowdsourced and generally seem decent. This can give you an idea of which skill to prioritize and what other players think this character is good for. A safe stopping point is around talent level 5 or 6. Since the recommendations are not always optimal, if you're taking talents past these levels it's probably a good idea to reference the character builds spreadsheet later in the OP. ![]() This is the meat of your character building. Equip them and level them up, they are basically your gear. A level 70 character with good artifacts will outperform an 80 with bad ones every time. Artifacts have a mainstat that increases every level and substats which will upgrade randomly every 4 levels. If your artifact does not have the maximum number of substats for it's tier, a new one will be added instead. You might see lots of guides and posts online recommending very specific artifact sets with specific stat spreads. These are typically aimed at endgame content and are considered aspirational goals even then. You will go crazy if you try to follow these guides early game, many of the artifact sets aren't even available until way later! Instead, at lower levels (<AR35) you just want to focus on getting some artifacts with decent mainstats and leveling those. If possible, Atk% is a safe bet for just about every slot unless the character is an exception that scales off different stats (eg. Noelle and Barbara). Flowers will always roll flat HP and feathers will always roll flat attack. Set bonuses will be a nice well, bonus until you can reliably start farming 5* artifacts. Don't worry about upgrading low level artifacts! You recover about 80% of the xp when you feed a leveled artifact to another one, statistically it's even a little more due to random bonuses. ![]() This is the bread and butter of the combat system in Genshin. Reactions are what really boost your teams damage and the optimizations can go deep at the high end. Before that, it's good to have a general idea of what reactions do and which ones are useful. The reactions can be roughly split into four categories: single target, aoe, utility, and support. Single target: Not much to say here, these do big numbers nice and simple. While these reactions do single target damage, the vast majority of elemental applications are aoe so you will not be stuck trying to apply them individually. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() AOE: These reactions do big numbers, and will also do some damage to nearby enemies even if they don't necessarily have the right elements on them. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Utility: These won't do as much damage as the single target or AOE reactions, but they're still handy in certain situations. ![]() ![]() Support: There are two special reactions with geo and anemo. These two elements react with everything except each other and dendro. ![]() ![]() You can also categorize reactions into amplifying and transformative reactions. Amplifying reactions (Vaporize/Melt) are fixed multipliers on the base damage. Transformative reactions (everything else) are based on character level and elemental mastery. ![]() There is a lot of different terminology for teambuilding roles out there, some more specific and fiddly than others. This guide will split roles into 3 main categories, the carry, supports, and healers. Some characters are better suited for one role over another, but many characters can fulfill multiple roles depending on their gear. Carry - This is the character that you will be actually attacking with on the field. Pick a character you like to play! Support - This is a character that you swap into to use their skill or burst and then swap away from. They are here for setting up elemental reactions by applying elemental statuses or some special character mechanic (buffs, debuffs, etc). Being a support doesn't mean they don't deal damage, just that they don't have much field time relative to a carry. A special type of support is the battery. They are the same element as your carry and generate lots of elemental particles (the little orbs flying at you in combat) to charge up your carry's burst. If possible, swap to your carry right after using the battery's skill so the carry picks up the generated orbs for even more energy. Healer - They keep your party healthy with their skill or burst, some do so with direct heals and others by shielding. Can also be replaced by plates of A fast way to build teams is to first pick out your favorite character(s), pick compatible reactions, and choose teammates based on which reactions you want. When starting out, you want to invest into a carry character. They want the highest levels, best artifacts, best weapons, etc. Support and healer characters do not need as much investment and can easily lag behind by multiple ascensions. If you want to try out the Spiral Abyss, consider building up another carry for taking on the higher floors. You will eventually need two teams even in the tutorial levels (floors 5-8). As of writing this, most tierlists have been written back when the game just came out and are garbage. They were made in a rush and plenty of good characters were rated "D tier" for basically no reason other than to get clicks. Make a team based on your playstyle and preferences and don't let reddit get you down. We're happy to help suggest teams and character builds, but you need to tell us which characters you're using, constellations, and your world level so we know what you're working with. Advice for someone just starting out can be really different for someone near endgame! ![]() Yep, this game has a stamina system and it’s called resin. You unlock it at Adventurer rank (AR) 8 and it is used to acquire most progression materials. Eventually, you'll unlock a recipe which will allow you to bank 200 resin at a time. If you want to play ~optimally~ you want to always use resin if you have it, but this is hardly required for enjoying the game if you're not rushing for the Spiral Abyss. When you do feel like spending resin, here are some useful breakpoints AR 8 - Blue leylines aka xp book leylines unlocked AR 12 - Yellow leylines aka gold leylines unlocked. If you don’t know what to spend your resin on, you can’t go wrong with these at any AR. AR 16 - Weapon Ascension materials dungeons unlocked. AR 22 - Artifact dungeons unlocked, they will primarily drop 2*/3*. Not worth farming unless you’re really hard up for artifacts. AR 27 - Talent level up materials dungeons unlocked. AR 35 - A lot of unique artifact set dungeons unlocked. You will probably be getting 3* drops with the occasional 4*. You can start farming here but the value still isn’t great. AR 40 - This is when 4* artifacts become more common and you start getting 5* in dungeons. I started seriously farming artifacts here. AR 45 - This is when 5* artifacts become more common. ![]() So you've played a bit of the game and reached Adventurer Rank 7, at this point the game will just drop a ton of gacha nonsense on you. If you have no idea wtf is happening, read on! What is a gacha? In short, gacha is basically equivalent to lootboxes. Use currency to roll the dice and you have a low chance of getting something shiny but you will mostly get junk. Yep, it's gambling! Gacha games are a common mobile genre. You might recognize games such as Fate Grand Order, Summoners War, Dragalia Lost, Marvel Battle Lines, etc. as examples of this genre. Know what you're getting into and set a budget if you want to spend. One trick I use is to stay far away from places where people post their rolls, I know it's fun to do so but it's effectively the flashing lights on a slot machine and will fool you into thinking the chances are higher than they are. Banners Banners are how you get more characters and non craftable 4*/5* weapons. Do you need to roll on them? Again, the hardest content in the game has been cleared with free characters and events give out a free character every other patch. That being said, this is a character collector game and realistically most people will probably want to roll on the banners, even if it's just with free currency. The banners are roughly grouped as shown below. ![]() ![]() ![]() Bad Luck Protection Luckily Genshin Impact has
These bad luck protection systems are also in place for 4*s with a hard pity at 10 and soft pity at 9 rolls on all banners. However, there is no way to guarantee a specific on banner 4*. Novice Banner This is a special novice banner that every account can do two 10 rolls on for a discounted rate. ROLL ON THIS BANNER. This is your early game source of characters. It’s also just straight up cheaper than the normal banners and uses the same rolls as the standard banner, there is no reason not to use your early game currency on this banner. Character Banner A set of time limited banners that prominently features one 5* and three 4* rate up characters. You cannot roll 5* weapons on this banner but you can get 4* weapons. This is the equivalent to event banners in other gacha games. If you're not sure if you're looking at a character banner, look for a countdown on it. Soft pity starts at 74 with hard pity at 90. Weapon Banner A time limited banner that prominently features two 5* and four 4* weapons. You cannot roll 5* characters on this banner but you can get 4* characters. The 50/50 resets when you get either of the banner weapons, but it has it's own unique pity system called "Epitomized Path". It acts like the 50/50 system where you target one of the weapons and are guaranteed to get it after you lose once. This does not carry over between banners, you are back to random chance on the next one if you don't "use" it! The weapon banner is risky for newbies and it is recommended you don't roll on it until you hit endgame and have an idea of what might be useful for your teams. Soft pity starts at 63 with hard pity at 80. Standard Banner This banner is always available and is labeled “Wanderlust Invocation”. It has no rate ups and contains both 4*/5* weapons and characters, basically a random grab bag. Characters featured on the character banner are typically not added to standard, there have been a few exceptions but they are always clearly signposted. If you absolutely MUST have a specific character and they are not on the character banner, just....try to wait it out. Standard banner rates suck and you could be out literally thousands of dollars and still not get whichever anime waifu you’re chasing. Soft pity starts at 74 with hard pity at 90. Chronicled Wish Banner Having only appeared twice, this is the rarest type of banner. The banner has a two pools, character and weapon, each containing a set of limited and standard items. You select one item to target which locks the banner into character or weapon mode, preventing you from getting anything outside of that pool until you get your target. The targeting works exactly like "epitomized path" on the weapon banner, where you are guaranteed to get whatever you're targeting after you lose once. Since the banner only pulls from a specific pool, it's possible to lose to a limited character or weapons. Soft pity starts at 74 with hard pity at 90, even for weapons. 10 roll? 1 roll? Due to the bad luck protection system it ends up being the same either way. Some people like saving up and doing big rolls at once, some people roll one at a time when they get the primos for it. Some do a combination and do 10 rolls till they're at soft pity and then single rolls after so they don't "waste" rolls after they get a 5*. Do whatever! Wtf is with all these currencies? How do you roll on these banners? Well there is some sort of Chinese gambling law that requires currencies to be obtuse and confusing, so here's a general breakdown ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You can buy fates directly on the banner page so you don’t need to keep track of exactly which is which or worry about accidentally buying the wrong ones. There are also two bonus currencies that you can only get from rolling on banners which are spent at the Paimons Bargains tab in the shop. ![]() ![]() The general rule of thumb is if you're starting out, buying characters is the way to go. ESPECIALLY for getting your hands on Bennet, Xingqiu, and Xiangling. Since the rotation is limited to the starter 4*s, you will eventually reach a point where you don't need more copies. Then, it is better to spend the glitter on intertwined fates unless you neeeeed to collect all the constellations. The weapons are....fine. They are not really BiS for anyone, but they aren't terrible either. I wouldn't recommend buying them. TL;DR
![]() I hate my account Ashenai posted:By the way, probably nobody cares, but just for the record: it is no longer practical to reroll, because the AR 7 rewards are gone. So you only get the 10 newbie rolls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fcYVj8Otsic Co-op and you Co-op in this game is weird. Exploration and questing is purely single player, material gathering and resin spending can be done co-op. Domains (and some events) have an automatic matchmaker, leylines and world bosses require manually joining peoples worlds. Everyone can spend resin at the end and the rewards are instanced. Boss kicking your rear end? Team up and wreck it! Domains boring? Find some people to suffer with you! Need more flowers but you've picked every single one? Find some goons and take theirs, they probably don't need them anyway. We have a discord with a bunch of people in it, feel free to come by and say something. General Build Information Character Builds Spreadsheet - A spreadsheet maintained by the theorycrafting community with recommended artifact and weapon loadouts for characters. Keqing Mains Website - Gives detailed rundowns on specific characters and their playstyles, along with some basic team suggestions. This is updated much more slowly and some builds may not have the newest weapons or artifact sets. However, the guides tend to be pretty good for explaining how to actually use a character. Player housing! ![]() There is player housing and it's pretty decent. Do not ignore the teapot! Once you upgrade it the teapot shop will sell a fragile resin that decays in a week, artifact xp, xp books, and some other stuff for teapot currency each week. It's real good even if you don't care for decorating! Just plop down items wherever, the teapot doesn't care. Some things to know
Parametric Transformer The often forgotten but still pretty handy junk eater. Throw in your extra junk once a week and get some random useful upgrade items back (xp books, mora, weapon upgrade materials, talent books). Results are random but there may be a way to bias them towards certain sets of rewards, the groupings are recorded here. Is this a good idea? How is the Inazuma story? Unnecessarily wordy, for the most part. I didn't think it was especially terrible, all things considered. As a plus side, you won't have to wait months for a questline to continue because they hadn't written it yet. On the downside, I suspect the feeling that things get wrapped up tidily and absurdly quickly will be more pronounced, unless you intentionally ignore the storyline for a few weeks or something. Incidentally, you only have to have finished the prologue story to go to Sumeru, apparently. The game's willing to give you a cliff's notes version of whatever archon story beyond that it deems important, although I can't imagine it'll let you actually do the Sumeru storyline without doing the previous quests. Not really sure how that works/will work.
