Why are my notifications not showing and just appearing as "x Notifications" at the bottom of the screen? I'm not currently in a Focus but this is what it does when I am in one. This is the first time it's done this. Maybe some screwy Apple Intelligence thing?

You might have accidentally swiped the notifications down on the Lock Screen and it’ll simplify down to that. Tap the “x Notifications” text and they’ll come back.

All browsers on iOS are built on webkit, i.e. they're all safari clones. That's why you can't install individual add-ons to them for adblocking, etc.
It's a bit more nuanced cause there's like another way or two for apps to implement it, with different controls they can have over it and limitations. And with the EU stuff I thought there might've been some movement to (eventually) allow third party engines?

jorbas posted:

I could be very wrong but I’m under the impression that the lack of extensions like ublock origin is nothing to do with Apple having something against ad blocking itself but rather that they have issue with the level of access to the browser that an extension of that sort requires. Instead, they provide an API specifically for content blocking that ad blocking extensions such as Wipr use, rather than giving extensions the keys to the kingdom. If they had something against ad blocking specifically then why provide the content blocking API at all? Of course you could take the cynical view that this is purely so they can serve ads that their provided API can’t do anything about!
There's been like two or three versions of content blocking or something. Like originally yeah, uBlock just wouldn't work with how limited the API was. At this point it's been changed and opened up quite a bit, not sure it's enough for uBlock though which may be the issue. I thought I saw something recently about work being started on (or maybe reinvestigated in) it so may just be early in the process.

Every time I take my phone out of the case I really want to be the kind of person who can just have a caseless phone out and about but I don't trust myself not to get any scratches on it. It feels so good not to have this big brick in my hand!

What's the absolute slimmest MagSafe-friendly case for the iPhone 15 Pro?

It’s solely about grip and comfort for me.

The iPhone as-is is slippery to hold, slides off sofas & out of pockets, has sharp edges, snags my trouser pocket on the lenses every time it goes in.

A stick-on canvas/leather feel skin on the back might help a lot, but the lenses still stick out with a hard 90 degree edge, and seems to get worse every year.

Just make it as thick as the lenses and give me more battery life with the extra space and we have a much better device for caseless use.

I like how the old chrome backed phones were less slippery to hold than whatever frictionless texture they're putting on the phones now.

But hey it photographs better and looking good in marketing moves units.

If AppleCare+ were longer I’d use my 15 Pro caseless, but I want to keep it for 5+ years so case it is.

I’ll look these up, thanks! They’re a little pricier than I’m used to for cases but if the quality and thinness is there then maybe I can treat myself.

Take a look around Amazon you might be able to find something that’s cheaper probably. The Benks one is slightly cheaper at like $40 something but it’s a lot for what the case is.

You can even just get a dbrand skin or something similar if all you’re looking for is grippiness
and scratch protection.

You can set it as a different device type in Bluetooth settings. It only cares about the volume when set as headphones.

Everyone talks about the 4/4S, but the 5/5S was the best industrial design imo.

That said, I run my iPhone naked and only put it in a case when I travel. :feelsgood:

Ad blockers with "annoyance" filters may cover that one. I think Wipr 2 has one

On a related note, I hate Google's "Google Prompt" verification so loving much and of course there's no way to turn it off

Yes please send a popup message to a handheld Android device I haven't touched in 6 months just because I tried to log into Youtube. Maybe also send it to my wife and interrupt whatever she was doing?

My ad blocker doesn’t block it. I ended up using DuckDuckGo. Cause gently caress that pop up is annoying. I’ll search for something and the pop-up will pop up super fast and before I can react. I’ve accidentally touched it and it will shoot me into the App Store. Then I’ll go back to the browser and one of two things will happen… It will either loving shoot me back into the App Store againor it’s completely cleared out what I’ve searched for and I’ll have to type it all again.

Yeah my friend ditched google search because of that exact reason.

The awful plan seems to have worked though because my mom thought the Google app on her phone is how you use the internet to search things now.

The “can we use your location to show results closer to you” prompt even though I explicitly told it a million times not to and have my browser block it is what did me in.

Since then I bought an iPhone, iPad, Mac mini and ditched Chrome.

I have a neighbor that works on Apple ads and I asked him how they can do ads if they claim to be privacy centric and he said that’s what makes it a really hard problem to solve. I believed him after seeing all the stuff Google collects and pushes for to make a buck.

This part is really loving insidious, especially because it has no way of knowing that you deleted the app. Trying to go back to normal TOTP verification was almost impossible.

Search Ban makes Google somewhat usable by allowing you to hide and prioritize specific search results.

I ended up switching (and paying for) Kagi. I will say, Google's search is a bit better about surfacing eCommerce-related content, but that makes sense.

Now that I'm De-Googled, Google sent me an invite to their Online Insights Study, which pays you to be part of, which is pretty funny.
