I actually know a few people on the coaching and support staff at Lindenwood, the newest Division I program, and let me tell you: it's been great to see them not only win the occasional game, but more importantly gain a ton of respect throughout the college hockey world. Their budget is not the biggest by any means, they're playing all bar two series away from home, their rink is a 10-minute drive from campus (though it's all highway), but everyone there has bought into the culture (which already existed, as LU was one of the best ACHA programs for years) and wants to be part of something bigger than themselves. Hell, I've already seen a few Michigan hockey people on Twitter say they're following Lindenwood after they came up to Yost earlier this year and acquitted themselves very well. They just got a road sweep up at West Point and have played a very fearless style of hockey: not afraid to hit, not afraid to take chances, not afraid to take off their glove after scoring and flashing the L to a goalie. (Yes, this happened:) https://twitter.com/LULionsHockey/status/1578893785328943111?s=20&t=9wfL4TiJTRxs5Iq4VsaYuw I'm looking forward to how this shakes down and if they'll get into Atlantic Hockey or the CCHA.

That’s a really solid sweep over Michigan from the best University in Minnesota. Really a lot less emotion in these games than I’d want out of some top teams. This was also the first time I’d seen the new challenge system in play and it is absolutely awful.

Somehow doing worse than St Thomas. It must be difficult to recruit to LSSU. Small city in the UP next to slightly large city in Canada is not going to be a huge draw. Travel for them must be horrible.

If anything having the larger city across the bridge is nice to have. The Canadians all came for the Walmart and the casino, the Americans went up for the actual mall, restaurants and such. Duluth does have the draw of better competition though. spwrozek fucked around with this message at 17:38 on Jan 15, 2023 |

LSSU is also an absolutely minuscule school compared even to the others in the UP, I think they barely have 2000 students. E: yeah, 2,200. Fightin' Nerds have 7,200 and Northern's got 6,600. Not exactly huge themselves but there you are. DJExile fucked around with this message at 20:17 on Jan 16, 2023 |

I was gonna say Quinnipiac is pretty small, but even they have 8k undergrads. OTOH, AIC only has 1700 undergrads, has very little to recommend to it in terms of campus and location, play in a not much worse quality league, and have been good enough to advance in the Frozen Four in the last five years.

your Lindenwood update: once again, they went up to a power school (NoDak in this case) and twice jumped out to big leads, only to lose late due to the talent gap making itself apparent.

I wanna say Union has a super small enrollment too, like sub-2000, and they had a great stretch not that long ago, so yeah it's definitely possible but you need a lot to go right I wanted to yell at you about how poo poo the Atlantic is, but yeah thinking about it the ECAC is definitely better but... not by much

They're flying this year, but Quinnipiac has a soft conference and according to CHN the 42nd strongest schedule compared to the Gophers with the 2nd strongest schedule. I get it too though, they're winning almost every game, but when you only play one non-conference team with a record above .500 (Sacred Heart on 1/27), that isn't really going to tell anyone a whole lot about how good your team really is. I'll give the UP schools Northern Michigan as a draw. Marquette is pretty decent as a small college town. I've not been to Houghton, so I'm not sure about that one. It's still in a bigger place than LSSU if you remember that it's probably a little more difficult to go party in Canada and then stumble through border crossing to get back to the dorms in the US. Lindenwood has been a good surprise this year. I hope they keep progressing and start causing some good standings trouble for teams that think they're going to get an easy weekend.

actionjackson posted:the minn game is 2-2 NHL teams can draft the rights to players while they're still in college, and then those players can stay in college as long as they want before going pro. Basically, a team can draft any 18-20 year old on it's draft pick, regardless of where they're playing. "Normal" penalties are 2 minutes and end early if the team with the advantage scores, but really bad penalties like hitting a guy in the head are 5 minutes and last the full length no matter how many goals are scored. Don't hit people in extremely dangerous ways.
