I bought a used copy of this game in 2009 and have yet to actually see if this discs work. So I'll be watching this for sure!

Avert your eyes, boys and girls. Dare I say it, the game is about to get ~ political ~.

I'm perpetually an episode behind on this LP, but one of the charming things about this series is how weird some of the NPC interactions are. Every town has at least one person in a hosed-up marriage, or with some particular neurosis, and it gives the game a lot of optional color and personality IMO. Like how the heck does the guy who pirouettes all day not throw up red flags when you're thinking about marriage?

I'm a few updates behind but I agree wholeheartedly with Fedule's "every problem you've had about a video game comes back to the devs wasting the player's time" argument. At least, it pretty neatly sums up the problems that I've had trying to get into certain series/genres.

Anybody else getting some Kingdom Hearts vibes from Wiseman?

I like that the machina arma is just sitting around in the Cloudvents, hoping that you'll come back and willingly submit yourself to getting waxed by it. Laziness in the absence of actual orders is an under-discussed part of war.

Also, I'm trying to determine if Verus knows that Duhr actually still exists, or if he's name-dropping it the way someone might talk about, I dunno, Camelot today.

E: meant for episode 26, didn't see 27 get posted before I hit Post.

I've been meaning to post that I do like the VO in this game quite a bit, especially Milly's performance. And I'm kind of fond of the original BK's voice work, warts and all. I'd agree to keep rolling with the GameCube version but I am hype for people to have a chance to play these weird good games again.

I'm an episode behind yet again, but I like Rodolfo's "car dealership owner" vibe. Really fits the small, backwater character of Sadal Suud.

Also the attendant doing air squats while he and his co-workers are locked up is a great example of the hosed up NPC interactions that this game/series loves. Like why put that guy there at all?

Has there ever been a "good" (D&D alignment, not quality) flesh cavern? Jabu-Jabu's Belly I guess?

E: a little (!) icon appeared above the skeleton in the middle of the skeleton party, was that anything?

At this point I have to wonder if Verus is just keeping Sagi employed for some sort of tax break, he doesn't seem to care about the quality of Sagi's work.

Also I still love that Giacamo sends you hate mail in between fights lol. Twitter started up in the same year that this game came out and yet the devs really nailed that detail :v:

So if we're recruiting people to move to Sedna.....where is Sedna anyway?

Also I like that they sort of re-used the Komo Mai theme from the last game here. Not that they haven't done something similar for a few other locations, but I like this remix in particular.

I like the running theme throughout these games of people misinterpreting myths and legends to great detriment. Getting a myth wrong is definitely well-worn ground for RPGs, but something about the way BK handles it appeals to me for whatever reason. Maybe because in the original BK at least, multiple villains get owned by not understanding what they're toying with :v:

Gotta be honest, I thought Lolo was going to turn out to be the afterling. No I don't remember if she is in BK proper or not.

Also got a good laugh out of the (I assume unintentional) 10-15 seconds of dead air at the end of this ep, leaving that final conversation and Fedule's comment to twist in the wind.

Geldoblame is the guy in my biochem class who gave his midterm presentation right before someone plugged in an infected flash drive that made a bunch of porn pop up on the projector. It doesn't matter how good of a job he did, ain't nobody going to remember that poo poo after what followed.

Lore-heads will recognize the same spirit grove on Mira where Kalas also received his guardian spirit :eng101: A more ambitious plot might have had Baelheit's spirit and Kalas' spirit be the same entity, but that seems tough to pull off with you being able to name your spirit in both games (not to mention the VA hoops that the games have to jump through for that).

Speaking of VAs, loving how Baelheit's and Milly's are both bringing their A-game, juxtaposed with Verus' bringing his S-game (the "S" stands for "silly").

There's probably a way to write the Verus-Wiseman twist(?) with a little more foreshadowing. Like have Verus as an additional parallel to Sagi and Baelheit, where Verus knows that this presence in his life isn't a guardian spirit but he lies to people about it anyway. The rule around guardian spirits are virtually non-existent anyway so go nuts IMO.

Also, ignoring everything else going on right now, I really thought we'd get one more Giacomo sighting here at the end. We haven't seen that fool since the end of Disc 1, and he was talking a ton of poo poo then!

So I'll confess that someone LP'd this game on this site years ago, and I read/watched that whole thing so I remembered a lot of the broad plot strokes going into this. Hearing you talk about the ending feeling rushed now, yeah I can totally see it. I wonder if anyone involved with the game ever floated the idea of pushing it back to be an early Wii title, though I suppose they would have then been legally obligated to staple some silly motion controls onto it :v:

Also I love the goofy post-credits stinger with Geldoblame, even if it makes zero sense in context. Why are we giving this election loser's secretary (E: chief of staff?) the literal keys to the kingdom? Why does he suddenly want the End Magnus when Verus' plot was just to steal Baelheit's machina program? Why is this the first name-drop of Georg when the whole plot was kicked off by science experiments gone wrong? But they did a cool remix of the Alfard/Imperial theme from OG BK so all is forgiven.

Also young Geldoblame's crazy face is identical to old Geldoblame's crazy face, so yeah consistency. But yeah, Geldoblame becoming emperor and becoming BK1 Geldoblame in terms of characterization seems like a storyline that was cut for time but they HAD to address anyway because, well, he's the emperor in the first game so they can't just ignore that.

There's probably an interesting story you could tell about an underqualifed but otherwise unassuming ruler coming into power during a full-blown political crisis, seeing the huge military apparatus that their predecessor built but never used, and making that their entire personality. But a mid-00s jRPG that was being rushed out the door probably isn't the place to tell it.
