No Nanowrimo thread in 2022? Have goons lost their valour? Never! What is Nanowrimo? Nanowrimo is an annual event where people around the world sign up to What kind of lunatic would do this? Writing 50,000 words in a month is very tough, but it’s a great way to get motivated to sit down and write something. Some people start a completely new project and try to finish it during the month, others use it as a way to work on neglected writing projects. There are no rules, as long as you get your 50,000 words done! The most magical time of the year! I've done NaNoWriMo for the past four years, plus a few previous times I just wish I hadn't waited until October 30th to actually sit down and plan what I'm going to write. I have a lot of respect for people who can just sit down and write into the darkness but I am very much not one of them.

I'm writing the third book in a fantasy series when I can, in between incorporating feedback on the first book from my alpha readers. Targeting 120K in length, but instead of a novel it'll be six novelettes featuring the characters from the first two books. Probably won't get through all of the first draft in November but will get through at least 50K of it. I haven’t prepped or done much thinking really, but I guess I’ll take a break from my urban fantasy novel and write a short story in the same universe. Hopefully, I’ll be able to put that up on my blog as a bonus for readers. It won’t be anywhere close to 50K words, but I bet I can swing 9 or 10K. Blargh. I have two frontrunners for projects I'd like to be working on, which I'll try to use nanowrimo for, and I can't decide which one I really want to work on. One is a novel about two codependent friends in academia, one of whom is an unscrupulous rear end in a top hat and ruined the other's career by negligence. The other is some sort of narrative about two young people (one human, the other alien) trying to survive under the brutal yoke of an oppressive, humanity-first-at-all-costs spacefaring civilization. Heck, maybe I'll work on both and see what shakes out.

I have never actually finished a NaNoWriMo challenge, but that doesn't stop me from trying year after year. My goal for 2022 NaNo is to finish draft two of the paranormal fantasy novel I drafted during NaNo last year. Smaller word count goal this time. Yesterday I was at that low, low point where I'm absolutely convinced the whole thing, all 100k words of it, is utter trash. I'm doing a NaNoWriMo this year after taking breaks from it for the past few years. I suppose it's "cheating" that right now I'm just describing the map of the world, next I'll write about the nobles and notables of the realm, and then I'll do a brief history. All before I actually start writing from a main character's perspective. ...But those 50k words got to be crapped out of somewhere!

I'm probably not gonna put much effort into NaNo this year because I've got a shitload of coursework, but my tentative 2613 words so far is a novel adaptation of a screenplay I'm writing for my screenwriting class. Rock star from the early aughts wakes up from a coma seventeen years later to find out his former music partner is on a murder spree and the FBI needs his help tracking him down.

Thanks to NaNoWriMo, I got to google "What do brains taste like?" (Not writing Hannibal Lecter/Jeffrey Dahmer slashfic, but rather some scenes where my protagonist and his friends help a group of villagers kill a rampaging bear, and as part of the victory celebration they get to partake of the grey matter of the beast.) 7636 words so far! I'm targeting 2500 words per chapter for my 6-in-1 novelette project, so one chapter a day will keep me ahead of schedule and still leave me some time to work through line edits on my first novel. I do have the dual advantage of being fast as hell when I write from an outline as well as having a pretty detailed outline prepared.

This is so much worse than my first nano, when I was cackling with glee at every line. My prose is insanely rusty and I feel like I've forgotten how to vary my sentence structure or actually do show dont tell. On the other hand that's what editing is for, and I have a decent shot at hitting 20k today or tomorrow.

After totally half-assing and badly failing a couple NaNo attempts in my teen years, I'm making my first really serious try with, like, an outline and stuff, and it's going pretty well so far. At 9113 words and I think my outline is strong enough to get me well to 50,000 before the month is out.

So, for anybody who mainly writes using word sprints, what time increment are you finding the most success with? I've found that as long as I know what I'm writing, 20 minutes is really good and I think I like it way more than 15. I'm getting 700-800 words very consistently.

Not bragging: I've got about 25k words typed up as of today which is half the typical NaNoWriMo goal, but all of it was backstory and world building. I'm actually a little stumped as to what characters to pick and use to actually write a compelling story with it.

So my project is basically a d&d campaign that never was. Without going too much into details- within the past fifty years a number of bad things happened: a horrific plague; major wars between five of eight factions that led to three joining up to gang up on the strongest one; internal power struggles in one that sent nobles fleeing their homelands; and a meteor seen by all of the world powers hit the frozen far north. The kingdoms are licking their wounds and have a truce for now and all are trying to rebuild and recover from all the awful things that happened. The main stories I had in mind are: * An effort to recover the meteorite for one of the kingdoms requires an expedition of many expendables but also a few important figures to keep tabs on the operation. The meteorite may or may not be magical or some other Mcguffin. Haven't decided yet. * Due to nearly being wiped out, a few brothers and sons of a noble house fled and went their separate ways. One lost his hand but is still a skilled swordsman and has gone to be a mercenary. The other, to the capitol in an effort to find a wife to bring back despite his loss in status. I can't decide if I want the merc's story to link up into the expedition to the North, and what exactly will happen to the one in the capitol or if somehow I drag both into the expedition. I had ideas for characters in other parts of the world but I feel like despite all the world building like describing the world map as a cartographer and travel writer then writing a who's who as a suck-up scholar and record keeper of an imperial university- I may want to focus on just one part of the world for now so my scope doesn't launch into the stratosphere. If I really go ham on this I'll maybe later write the stories that contain characters from those other kingdoms. At the very least I have a solid foundation for the world and setting at this point. Also as far as writing in short bursts goes I kind of just put music on and drink tea or sip a single shot of whiskey depending on time of day and let the ideas fall out. I write an outline of what I overall want to happen in steps, and then I jump around between what part is more interesting to write about as I go and actually spent a day just making edits to make sure that it all tracks for continuity. I haven't tried writing in sprints yet.

I joined a discord I found on reddit, and it has a bot and 2-3 other people will often join in, and I find it makes it much easier. 15 feels kinda short, and by 30 my attention span has left me.

That sounds fun! My Nano story last year was also about a polar expedition, and it was a lot of fun to write. I would personally want to keep the story focused on one main plot. Maybe have the mercs join a rival expedition for the meteorite? Easy conflict! And then you can drag whatever other characters you want into the rival expedition.

Just found this thread. I'm doing the NaNo too. My project is the follow up my first book, the first draft of which I finished in September. Took a break from that one to let it ferment. So far I'm on fire. Having more fun being creative than I've had in years. Passed 20k words last night.

Doing NaNo as well, for the second year - got 23k words so far. Working on the first draft of the third novel in a fantasy series, and learning some things - like how there's something wrong with my chapter outlines, or maybe I'm just not good at organizing them, because the chapter word-count varies wildly. In this one, first chapter got to 5.8k words, while the second one is 13.4k lol. Considering I got 18 chapters, that overshoots my expected 120k-150k final amount a bit. To be fair, I have split the story into following 4 separate characters, and I'm just not experienced enough to organize something like that properly. But hey, at least I'm keeping pace with the 50k words deadline.

I'm just gonna write  until I get to "The End" now and vibe my way there because I can't think my way out of this one.

You could Google word counts by genre but the most important thing to ask yourself is, "Do those words serve my story?" If you're including lots of extra worldbuilding, unnecessary exposition, etc., then I would think about that as you continue writing. But for now, regardless of the answer, don't take anything you've written out, even if you know you'll slash it later. Worry about editing after you're done writing.

Just keep writing and if you need to, you can cut it down in the edits.Or you can be like me, and panic when you realize the final word count is going to be massively over blown and just...write up to the end of Act I and call it Book 1 of a series instead.
